jan, we plan to be in the juliann alps (as you know from my other postings)in june. bled for 1 full day. you had mentioned soca valley and bovec. can these areas be done as day-trips from bled? (how far away are they). also, are there any other towns, valleys, mountains, or areas near bled, that are gorgeous, and worth a day-trip? do you know if this area compares to the dolomites or the alps around innsbruck in beauty? is there an opportunity to easily go to mountains in southern austria from bled? (we will have a car). we just love gorgeous mountain scenery. thanks. jack
questions for slojans about bovec, bled, soca valley.....

oops! i meant slojan......
Hi Jack,
I am about to sound wishywashy here. The Julian Alps are beautiful, but very different from the Dolomiti. To me, the Dolomiti look like God plunked boulders down and left them. The Julian Alps are more jagged and more forested. They are similar to the Alps in Austria but smaller. I love the Dolomiti but also really like the Julian Alps.
I would not recommend taking a day trip from Bled to the Soca River Valley. What I would do is stay at one of two tourist farms near Bovec. Drive from Bled toward Kranska Gora and then, take the Vrsic Pass over. It is lovely. Kranska Gora is a nice, mountain town and would be a good stop for lunch. As you are coming down the other side of the mountain, you will treated to beautiful views of the Soca River ribboning through the valleys. The water is a clear, aqua and gorgeous. This is THE area for sports. Try to stay at either Pristava Lepena or at Nebesa http://www.nebesa.si/ang/nebesa.html
After you tire of this area, drive toward the Italian border into the Goriska Brda. There is a wonderful hotel owned by the Belica winery. Stay there but go across the street to eat and taste wines at Klinec or Kristancic.
Another very beautiful mountain area is the Logarska Dolina. Not a lot of tourist know of this place but it is fabulous. It is great for hiking and sports as well. The hotel there is Hotel Plesnik. It is nice with good service and very reasonable.
The drive from Bled to Bovec is roughly 1 hour. You can do it in a day, but I like the area better than Bled. Bled is beautiful, but the Soca has a very positive energy. It would be wonderful for a bit of hiking.
The drive from Bovec to Goriska Brda (Medana) is about 40 minutes. The drive from Bled to Logarska Dolina is about 1 1/2 hours.
Finally, you could drive from the Bled area tpo Cortina via 111. This passes through Southern Austria. It is a slower route but is absolutely gorgeous.
Hope this helps.
