Questions About Samos
We's a group of 5 spending 4 nights in Samos in September but I'm torn between staying in Vathy (Samos Town) at the Hotel Samos or Hotel Paradise they cost 50 and 40 euro repectivley. The other choice is staying in Pythagorio at the Hotel Peguses for 40 euro. As you can see we are trying to stay in relativley inexpensive hotels so if you are familiar with any of these hotels or can suggest another I would love to hear from you or if you preferred one location over another I want to hear about it. Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is much help, since I've only stayed overnight en route to Patmos, and I can't remember which hotel it was - somewhere close to the end of the harbour where the ferries come in.
Samos Town is of course bigger, with quite large ferries going in and out of a handsome harbour backed by quite high hills, and plenty of shops and restaurants along the esplanade and in the streets behind. The archaelogical museum is quite interesting.
Pythagorio is much smaller, a picturesque harbour of rather smaller boats and the hydrofoil to Patmos, lined with some nice tavernas. One main shopping street and some rather handsome villas; not many signs of nightlife. I was certainly interested enough to try to find out if any UK tour operators did packages there, but apparently not.

Thanks Patrick! Did you like Patmos too, we'll be there right before Samos. In Patmos I've reserved the Asteri in Skala. I haven't booked anything yet for Samos but I'm leaning towards Pythagorio, I had another offer from a little hotel on the beach for 35 euro it looks too good to pass up.

We stayed a week in Pythagorio in 2002. It is quite small but it is built on the ruins of a Roman city that once had 60,000 people.
There are many antiquities that arn't advertised. Mostly they are free. There is a Roman bath/Church ruin that rivals the one in Ephasus. We only spent an hour in Samos town but didn't really like it compared to Pythagorio.

Thanks.
Yes, I liked Patmos - very quiet, which was what I wanted (apart from when the ferry manoeuvres around the harbour in the middle of the night!) - some beaches in walking distance of Skala, and it's easy to hire a scooter to go to some of the others, or you can take a boat trip to Psili Ammos.
There are some excellent panoramic views at www.vrpatmos.co.uk

we spent 2 weeks on Samos, and really enjoyed it, had relatives there so lived like the locals. We were in Karlovassi. I would tend to go to pythagoria. An interesting book to read on Patmos is by Tom Stone 'The Summer of My Greek Taverna' We spent a day in Patmos, it is very interesting There are many wonderful beaches on Samos. Near Pythagoria is the Eupalinos Tunnel and the Ruins of Herion, also, the Monastery of our Lady Spilani, which is in the back of a large damp cave. Koutsi is a great place to stop for an afternoon treat and a favorite resturant on Pythagoria side of the island was Pefkos. There is a nice Archeological museum in Vathy.
