Questions about General Strike in Italy May 6, 2011
I have read about a general strike in Italy that has been rescheduled to May 6, 2011. From what I read the local buses and trams will be involved. For those of you who know, does this mean a total stoppage of buses and trams or will there be abbreviated routes in place? How long will this last?
I will be in Rome on this day and am planning a Borghese Gallery tour that morning and a Vatican Museum Tour that night. I was planning on using the bus system for both, but a taxi may be my only other option as the Borghese is too far to walk. Walking to the Vatican Museum may be doable.

If you want current information about strikes in Italy affecting travel, go to easytravelreport.com
Then click on the link to Italy strikes. Italy always seems to be a crazy quilt of travel-related strikes, and the website confirms that.

Leslie, on strike days it can be really tough to find a taxi.
Any chance you can reschedule the Borghese to either another day, or get an early Borghese booking (say, 9 a.m.) and make sure you catch a bus during rush hour, before the 8:30 a.m. cut off that Zerlina mentions.
What part of Rome are you staying in?

We are staying in the Jewish Ghetto area. I think that the idea about changing the Borghese gallery reservations to a different time slot makes good sense. I will look into that.
Thanks for the information.

I just had another thought about taxis. Can you schedule a taxi to pick you up by calling the day before? It will probably be difficult to find one at a taxi stand, but by calling and scheduling a pickup the day before may solve the problem

Will train service from the airport into Rome be affected by this ? We were originally going to drop our car off in Orvieto and take the train in Sunday AM into Rome. Now thinking of keeping the car and driving to the airport to drop off, and taking a train or taxi in Sunday AM.

There are strike proof trains so you can always plan to take one of those. You can read this link and then there is another link where you can find out which trains by region (it's in Italian, but you shouldn't have a problem figuring it out).
