I really need opinions from people who have been there. It has been too many years for me to remember the driving times involved, and there is so much of the area with which I am not familiar. We have not used buses or trains in Spain.
We will be on a cruise that stops in Gibralter, Alicante & Barcelona. We have been to Gibralter and do not wish to visit again. We have not been to Alicante. We were in Granada once in the fall several years ago, and always wanted to be there in the Spring to see the gardens.
Here is what we are thinking about doing:
Arrive in Gibralter. Rent a car and drive to Granada. Visit the gardens, have dinner and spend the night in Granada. The next day, drive on to Alicante to meet up with the ship, and continue the cruise. It seems doable, but is it worth it? We would then have no time in Alicante.
If we didn't do that, would we be better off just visiting Alicante or a day trip to Valencia the day we are in Alicante. Since we are not interested in Gibraltar, would a day trip to one of the white villages be reasonable? If so, which one? Would we need to rent a car, or is it easily doable by bus or train? While I would love to see the gardens, I don't want two exhausting days to do it, and don't want DH exhausted from lots of driving. If a village or town has any charm, I am content to walk around and sit at a cafe. I've done research, but can't settle on anything. Suggestions, please.

What time does the ship leave Alicante? What day of the week is that?
How long is the ship in port of Alicante to do the day trip to Valencia? ( 2 hrs each way by car)
There is plenty to see closer to Alicante if you want to add something.
The train is also great to Valencia/Granada.
I will try to give you more details once you have answered those questions.
Thank you, Lincasanova,
Gibraltar: Mon, May 10, 8:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. (8 hours)
Alicante: Tue, May 11, 9:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. (9 hours)
Absolutely any suggestions for day in Alicante (or day near Gibraltar) are welcome.
It is about 3 hours from linea de la concepción ( the spanish side near Gib).. then 4 hours to alicante.. all divided highway except perhaps a few kms.
It is doable and if you are set on seeing the Alhambra, it certainly can be worked out.
I would not sleep in granada, though, but would travel at least an hour outside towards Alicante to make my next day not a total loss in so far as strolling alicante area, and giving me more time to get there.
There is an overnight train to Alicante/Valencia that might be a time saver from Granada.
I am unfamiliar with the public transport to granada from Linea de la Concepción. Your rental car would be cheaper I am assuming from a spanish city to drop off at another spanish city.
Near Alicante is Guadalest, needing a car.
I am in a rush right now but will try to come back with something creative.. but i think there are some regulars here who may have some great ideas.
