Question about apartment rental costs in Rome in March or April

Hi:

My wife and I are thinking of a vacation in Italy in the month of March or April 2011 - between 10 to 14 days - Rome, Venice, may be a few days in between in Tuscany. Haven't quite worked out the locations yet ...but definitely want to spend a few days in Rome irrespective of where we start.

We have a two year old; we prefer to cook for him - as much as possible - when traveling. Apartments (or hotels with kitchenettes like Residency Inn) work well.

Wanted to get some idea around what can I expect to pay for a reasonably good apartment for 4 or 5 nights? I did some cursory search on the net - the costs of $1500 euro plus for a week seem pretty expensive; it'll blow my budget.. I kind of see that Venice will be expensive if we want a good experience, but would like to see this balanced out by Rome and Tuscany cost of living to stay within (tentatively planned) budget of $2000-$2500 for food and hotel stay.

Would love to have the advise of this forum on Rome apartment rental costs and availability in April. is it usually possible to find a good, centrally located apartment within $600-800 for a week? (I would also love to have some recommendations on apartment rental agencies/specific apartments too that fit this budget)

Also, this will be (kind of) our first Europe trip. We have spent a couple of days in London with relatives and I have spent a few days in Marseilles on a conference.. But we have never really had a proper vacation in Europe. If you don't think, trying to rent apartments in Rome is a hot idea, please let us know.

Check out the rental reviews at slowtrav.com
Yes, it is a good idea.
Be aware of Easter week--popular and more expensive.

hi kaush,

personally I am sold on staying in apartments in places like Rome - you get far more room for your money, and that matters a lot when you are travelling with children. however I do think that your budget for a week in rome is pretty low - IMHO you are going to find it difficult to find anywhere that is less than €100 per night, especially as you run up to easter [which is on 24th april in 2011].

if you google "apartments in Rome/Venice" you will find that there are plenty of agencies that rent out apartments, plus "owner" websites that list privately owned apartments. "sleep in italy" [http://www.sleepinitaly.com/] is a well-known agency and is often recommended on this forum, but there are loads of others. [you can look for reviews on www.slowtravel.com too]

also - position is everything. with a little one, you don't want to spend loads of time on buses, and you want to be able to get back to the apartment for meals and naps. so really, you want to be in the campo dei fiori/piazza navona area, which is going to be more expensive than, say, termini or trastevere, but is going to be better in the long run.

you could also think about renting in Venice too - most will rent for a period of 3 nights or more - which again would be better with your infant in tow. that could considerably cut down costs as eating out in venice can be VERY expensive. if you have only got 10 days, consider doing JUST Venice and Rome - but if you have 14 days, you could probably squeeze in a few days in tuscany. Had you thought where?

Bob, Ann: Thank you very much for your quick responses!

Didn't consider the Easter week impact on Rome prices at all ; good to be forewarned. Both the slowtrav and sleepinitaly sites look very interesting. I think if I can go with an apartment in Venice too, spending more in Rome should be simpler. Sleepinitaly threw up a number of interesting choices in the 100eu+ range.

Ann -

Thanks a lot for the neighborhood suggestions. I completely agree with the idea of staying in a central location - when traveling with a toddler. We reached the same conclusions ourselves traveling through New Mexico last month ..

Re: Tuscany, we have not yet decided where. Would prefer not to have to rent a car. But from what I am reading in this forum and in books, that kind of complicates things. I have been looking wistfully at photographs of Sienna, although it may be nicer to stay someplace a little more rural after Rome. Would love to have your recommendations on Tuscany.

This may help. If you do not drive then Siena is the best option to use local transport.

Hello! My b/f and I will be in Italy during the same time frame covering CT/Florence/Siena/Rome/and Venice. So far we only have the Rome portion of that trip booked because we will be there enjoying the beautiful chaos of Rome during Easter. I booked a 1 bedroom apartment in the Colosseo area for 480E/week. Around $620 depending on the exchange rate. Did this through dailyflats.com which someone suggested on fodors. There was a little mix up with my reservation at the beginning because the apartment i booked was no longer on the site but they personally called me and gave me a big discount on a much better apartment. Hope you have some luck!

I have booked two different apartments in Rome using the following site
http://www.romecapitalapartments.com/
I am staying for 10 days before my Puglia trip and 3 days after in a different apartment next March/April.

The site was recommended by 3 different Fodorites. The apartments I chose were a very good price, and so far, I'm very pleased with the service.

The first apartment I booked is where a fodorite had her honeymoon last year, so I have first hand advice from her.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot everybody for your recommendations! We should be able to find something within our budget from these choices.

Bob - thank you for your exhaustive list of choices in Tuscany. We are still working thru this; but that list gives all sorts of options!
