Question - Orvieto Parking

I am trying to determine if it is safe to park my rental car overnight in Orvieto. I'm trying to avoid driving in the historical center of town where my hotel is located. I could leave the car at the big train station parking lot on the east end of town, at the bottom of the hill, where the funicular starts. Has anyone successfully used this lot overnight?

I have not parked overnight in that lot but I think Orvieto would be quite safe. But, when there last year I thought the train station lot had limited time.

There is parking behind the Duomo that should be safe. What did your hotel suggest?

lamogood,

We parked our rental car in the large parking structure at the opposite end of town, below the acensori (escalators). 3 nts, we had no problems. This was in 2000.

Thanks for the info. From my research, I know of the various parking areas in upper Orvieto. I just can't seem to find an online map (in English) clearly showing the restricted traffic zone. I am corresponding with my hotel in broken English/Italian, but would feel better if knew for sure. Also willing to park overnight in lower Orvieto if it will help me avoid those hefty fines.

lamogood -

We parked our rental in the train station lot for about 15 hours for a day trip to Florence, but not overnight. We also drove to the "top" of Orvieto (we missed the turn to a lower parking lot) and parked behind the duomo, but again only for a day trip. Getting to the lot behind the duomo did require folding in our side mirrors on the rental, though, so that we could squeeze the car through.

You might ask the hotel/B&B you're staying at in Orvieto the best solution to your problem?
