Pyrenees

Hi
We have 5 days to fill - our last stay will be in Begur, Costa Brava and we are going to the Languedoc near Carcassonne. We wish to spend some time in the Pyrenees. We were thinking about 2 days around the Villefranche-de-Conflent area and the surrounding villages - onto Andorra and then Vielha and back over the Pyrenees into France. Any suggestions on places to stay (balcony), places to see and alternative most scenic routes (even if they are a bit longer. I read Robert 2533 post and would like further suggestions please.

I have a superficial knowledge of the French side of the border here. Others will be better but call me back if no-one replies

It does not make much sense to drive from Begur to Villefranche de Conflent to Andorra to Vielha and back to France. I would drive from Begur to Puigcerda via Ripoll. You could stay in or near Puigcerda, which has a nice lake and drive down to Villefranche via Mont Louis. I don't know when you are planning to go but Andorra in summer is a zoo.
See viamichelin.com for a choice of itineraries.

Spending a day or two in Villefranche de Conflent would work. It's an interesting area and well worth a visit, but you will find the Val d'Aran much more beautiful.

As far as driving through Andora, I'd recommend keeping away unless there was something specific you wanted to do. You could stopped at the Spanish border in a long line on cars, which can be a pain, and could end up wasting a few hours.

I would drive from Villefranche de Conflent to Puigcerdà, then onto La Seu d'Urgell, before heading up to Vielha. It's a beautiful drive. You can cross back into France on the N-141, which passes through a valley that takes you to Saint-Gaudens.

We stayed at the Hotel Le Mas Trilles, just outside Cêret last June. We had a beautiful room with a private terrace on the second floor. The owners couldn't be any nicer. They also have a nice pool you can actually swim in (www.le-mas-trilles.com/en/).

Thanks for the replies.
I thought I would explain our itinerary so far for Aug/Sep 2015
Arrive Barcelona x 3 nights - Apartment near Placa Catalunya
Train to Perpignan x 2 nights - Duplex in town Airbnb. Pick-up car
Day trip to Collioure on Sun for market.
Drive to Roses Costa Brava x 3 nights (Mon-Wed) via Ceret, Amelie les Baines & Arles - Apartment with pool and terrace overlooking the sea.
Day trip to Cadaques whilst there - nothing else planned as yet.
The Thu and Fri nothing booked as yet - may leave flexible (any ideas?)
Thinking os staying coastal as rest of time will be inland.
Will do morning trips our
The Sat and Sun still on Costa Brava in Begur - Hotel Aigua Blava - Seaview room with balcony
Then we have Mon 7th to Fri 11th free.
Initially planning to go to the Basque area but too far and hurried.
I have read about Villefrance de Confluent and surrounding villages so would like to go there. Also Pyrenees for the scenery and drives. Is there a route over them back into France - more scenic?

Ran out of room.
We are then staying near Carcassonne in a village called Laurac for 7 days - Stone Apartment with terrace over 3 floors overlooking hills.
Day trips include: Carcassonne, Mirepoix and Belvis, Narbone and Bages, Minerve, La Grasse.

We then go to a village called Collias for 5 days - Apartment with terrace o/l river Gardon. Day trips include: Aigues Mort for market on Sun, Uzes, the Carmargue and Montpellier (so much to see and so little time.

Then onto Chamberey for nights - day trip Annecy and train to Milan and then home to Perth.

Any suggestions on all of this please?

Ta Lee

Only 3 nights (so only 2 days) in Barcelona? If so, I would recommend that you think through your priorities in advance, since I think you will need to be very selective. Once you decide what to do with your limited time there, consider reserving anything you can in advance, and/or buying tickets that allow you to bypass the lines.

Also, you might want to post a separate thread on your full itinerary, since the "Pyrenees" tag is likely to keep a number of people with potentially valuable input from responding.

Enjoy!
