purchasing amber - any hints

We plan to purchase some amber jewelry for family members while in Poland. Does anyone have some helpful hints for this type of purchase, how to avoid getting ripped off, and how to know whne you are getting a good deal? I appreciate your help!

Here's some info that may be useful:

I thought authentic, vs fake, amber floats in a saturated salt water solution, but this may not be true. I found the link above by Googling <authentic amber>

Authentic amber doesn't burn, either.

Unfortunately, nobody will probably allow you to test what they have for sale by trying to set it on fire..be an interesting scene though.

In Russia the salespeople have cig. lighters ready to show you their amber is authentic. Ask if they will test it for you if they don't offer.

I liked the amber with the little bugs in it, I tried to pick out all buggy amber. I don't know if it adds to the value of it, but it makes it unique!

Believe me, the mere sight of a lighter is enough to forestall any rip-off artist.....no need to actually put flame to stone.
