When I went in 2007, I was not impressed with the coverage in various guide book. The most useful of the sources I consulted was probably the Rough Guide. There were bits and pieces in other guidebooks, most of which was covered in other sources, and some helpful information in the National Geographic guide to italy that I didn't see anywhere else (but the there was very little information there). Things could well have changed since then.
Hope that helps!

Think we've repeatedly made do with an earlier edition of this (plus stuff we've picked up from tourist offices etc along the way!).....
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blue-Guide-S...7001454&sr=1-1
Perhaps depends on how you like your books.... theirs tend to have fewer pictures and recommendations for restaurants, bars etc than some - but are instead long on descriptions, history, museum plans and the like; try the samples pages here:

A few reader updates:
http://blueguides.com/tripjournal/bl...outhern-italy/
..................
Of the Lonely Planet range - although probably containing less specific coverage than their Puglia and Basilicata guide - this one is considerably more recent.... having been published at the start of 2012, and written the previous year!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Southern-Lon.../ref=pd_cp_b_0

If shopping today, those two are what I'd choose - for their complementary strengths!

Agree that there is not much in English.
The one I rely on most is probably Cadogan's Bay Of Naples and Southern Italy, 7th edition, which covers Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, and Calabria.
Venturing in Italy: Travels in Puglia is a good companion volume, but not strictly a guidebook.
Do not waste money on the new Lonely Planet Southern Italy. Just use the older LP Puglia and Basilicata.

Based on recommendations here we got the Cadogan Bay of Naples and Southern Italy And the Lonely Planet, Southern Itsly. we'll be in Naples somwanted books that covered it. also read venturing in Italy and picked up a few tips, but I had trouble reading all the stories so perhaps I missed some tips.
