puglia for three days, one a sunday, help with meals....

thanks to all of you i am booking 3 nights in october in puglia and need meal help now.
the challenge is the sunday night.

saturday night matera, staying at Locanda di San Martino
sunday night Lama di Luna, i think about 1/2 hour from trani
monday night trani, either at Mare Resort or san paolo conventi.

i am worried about the sunday. does anyone know where is open for dinner on that night? lunch?
i prefer to stay in trani and not travel outside if i can on the monday- dinner suggestions?
also, where should we eat the sat. night in matera?

like many here on this site, i am looking forward to authentic and delicious puglia food.
appreciate any help you can give!

We had a lovely dinner (twice actually) at the Rose dei Venti restaurant on the seaside in Trani and if I remember correctly most of the restaurant there were closed on Wednesday night, and not Sunday. You could check out some sites on the web and see what their closing nights are.

thanks!

on the sunday we will be near lama de luna. apparently lots of great eats nearby, but searching this forum all seem to be closed for sunday dinners. does anyone know if this really is the case? any suggestions? would i be better to skip that stop and just stay in trani 2 nights instead? thoughts?

if there is any possibility that you can get to the area in time for Sunday lunch, I would recommend Masseria Barbera.

If not, this place may be open for Sunday dinner, even though they were not open the Sunday of May 1. (You can read about my own long and frustrating search for a place open May 1st dinner on another thread here...)

Antichi Sapori might be open for Sunday dinner, too...

Or, just ask Lama di Luna if they can book you someplace nearby.

There is another restaurant in Montegrosso, Osteria dei Massari, that I believe is open Sundays. I will give you the phone number if you would like to call them. It is less than a mile from the hotel as I recall, and should be very good since it is on the hotel's "recommended' list.. I would have no hesitation to book there.

This is the site for Osteria dei Massari in Montegrosso. The few reviews I've read online, in Italian, are excellent. I would have no hesitation, since it is also recommended by Lama di Luna and is very close to that farm..just a couple of minutes by car.

thanks ekscrunchy! yes i did read your frustrating efforts in the area on a sunday, but i did not realize that the problem was the holiday- i thought it was the sunday issue.
we could do as you did with a lunch at masseria barbera, but it would be late- do you think we could arrive around 2 for lunch?
will lama di luna make reservations? your suggestion of osteria dei Massari is a good one- it is open on sundays for dinner.
thanks!

That is great news.

I think that the holiday exacerbated the Sunday issue for me. Yes, I think Masseria Barbera will accommodate you at 2pm, but not after that, based on my own experience. If I remember correctly, we had a 2pm reservation but I asked Lama di Luna to call them and ask if we could come later (we wanted to have a rest after arriving from the airport) but they were not happy about serving us later than 2pm. After having been there, I understand that since there is a progression of fixed dishes for Sunday lunch and they bring out stacks of plates for various tables at one time. You are really in for a treat; I am so glad your visit coincides with Sunday lunch. You must promise to sample the donkey meat; honestly, it was so sweet and tasty--a revelation for me. Although perhaps the menu will not be the same since the season is different. But even if you demur, there is so much food that you will not go hungry even if you bypass several dishes!

I think Massari will be a very good option for dinner...it is really almost within walking distance and because the area is so renowned for food, I would bet that the dinner will be a good one. You must promise to report back in detail!!

Lama di Luna should agree to make the bookings for you. Now what about Antichi Sapori?
