Public Transportation in Rome

We're very excited about an upcoming month stay in Rome and have some questions about the Metrebus system. From what I read, you can get a monthly (calendar month)pass for $30 that is good for unlimited travel on all buses, trams, trollies, Cotral, Metro A&B, Metro regional trains (Rome-Lido, Rome-Viterbo, Rome- Pantano) and Trentalia regional trains (Second class).

What is the FS in the Atac-Cotral-Fs System? What's the difference between ATAC and Cotral? What's the difference between a tram and a trolley? Am I correct that I can take the train to Ostia Antica without purchasing additional tickets? How about going to Viterbo? Is it true you cannot use the pass to get to and from the airport (FCO)?

I don't recall seeing any trolleys, but perhaps some exist.

Passes are not good for the airport even if you use the local train instead of the Leonardo Express. Passes can be zoned so not all trains in the area will be covered unless you buy a more expensive pass that included all zones. I'll see if I can locate a zone map.

The trains marked with gray are included in the basic pass.

There is a monthly pass for Rome or a monthly pass for Lazio.

Thanks! Your response is very helpful, especially that the color coding of map lines is useful to determine which are included in the pass.

I've read so many warnings about hefty fines when getting on a mode of transportation without having the appropriate ticket. Scary that you run the risk of being penalized for an innocent mistake.

I didn't know there was a monthly pass for Lazio region. That may be a better option as we plan to use Rome as a base and make numerous day trips in throughout the area.

The cost of the Metrebus Lazio depends on the number of zones it covers:
http://www.atac.roma.it/files/img.asp?r=511
The red zone counts as two zones, so the orange zone, for example, requires a three-zone ticket. A three-zone ticket costs 51 Euro; for four zones, it's 63 Euro.

Depending on the number and destinations of your day trips, it might be more economical to purchase individual day tickets (BIRG) for them.

With your help I'm beginning to understand. Two scenarios:

If I want to go to Ostia Antica, I think I could use the Rome pass (red 2-zone)without purchasing an additional ticket. Correct?

If I want to go from Rome to Frascati (orange 3-zone), can I use my red zone pass and buy an additional one zone ticket or do I need to buy a separate 3-zone ticket?

Sorry, but ATAC has most of their info about this in Italian only. Here is the link about the cost of the monthly Lazio pass and how the zones work.
http://www.atac.roma.it/index.asp?p=19&r=816

Translated by Google:

How much

The cost of subscription varies depending on the number of system areas Metrebus Lazio you wish to purchase.

Zone A - which corresponds to the Municipality of Rome - in the computation of the areas to buy equals the cost of two equal parts at a cost of € 30.00 (example: purchasing a subscription to zones A and B should be considered the ' amount to 3 zones).

AREAS

area for 1 € 21.00
€ 30.00 for zone 2
€ 51.00 for 3 areas
4 zones for € 63.00
areas for 5 € 78.00
6 zones for € 93.00
7 zones for € 93.00
How long

Month calendar printed on the card as part of the territory on areas purchased for unlimited travel.

We used Cotral to get to Trivoli. The pass you mention can be a great bargain, if you are there that long.

To further augment your information, here is a wonderful link to another thread about how to use the Rome bus system:
