YOu take the HEV train from Batthanyi ter to Szentendre. It takes about 40 minutes but it's very nice and safe.

We took a 1 1/2 hour cruise there and that local train back. No problem.
Actually, I was more impressed with most parts of Budapest than Szentendre.
I felt the storekeepers pretty well covered the main part of town with their goods hanging out in front.
Unlike Brugge (we were there on the same trip) where I believe they're not allowed to do that so the city is on display.
However, if you want to go I would recommend that local train in both directions.
Maybe an evening cruise on the Danube is romantic. That daytime cruise to Szentendre was a bit boring once we left Budapest (after 5 minutes).
