We will be spending a few days in December 2012 in Rome and then Vienna. We have always taken the guide books and done it ourselves to go on the cheap. Now I think it would be fun, if it is affordable, to have a private guide for a day in each city. Do you have experience with private guides in these cities? How much do you feel like they added to your experience? How much did they charge. I remember a number of Fodorites raving about someone named Michael Orsmond (I think) in Paris. He really impressed the people who hored him with how much he added. Now the question is about Rome and Vienna. Thanks for your Comments.

In Rome we have a wonderful guide whom we use. Her name is Silvana Vallauri. Just tell her that Jim Cantwell from Lake Como (Maslianico) sent you. She is reachable at silvanavallauri@yahoo.it. Trust me she is great. While in Rome try a great Osteria called Hostaria Costanza. It sits in a stone grotto underneath il Teatro di Pompei (Pompey's Theatre).
Have fun,
Jim
I tried that email address but it was not a good address. How much does she charge?
In Rome and nearby areas, Daniella Hunt is soooo great! She will customize what you want in addition to the tours she offers. She is fun and knowledgable-we had a blast with her!
We would not have gotten as much out of our trip withour her. We went with her to Villa D'Est and Handrian's villa, but she taught us alot about other places in Rome. I would hire her again, in a heartbeat!

If you are interested in a great. Wine tasting check out VinoRoma. For a food tour, check out Elizabeth Minchilli. We enjoyed both, especially the food tour!
