I ran across my account of travel in Austria in 1973. The prices I paid then were a little less than my trip in 2011. Some examples: Hostel in Slazburg - $1.50, in Obertraun (near Hallstatt) - $1.20. Salt mine tour in Hallstatt - $0.60 with student ID. Camping in Innsbruck - $0.85. Hotel in Werfen - $6.60 for 2.

Wow, yes, quite a difference! I last stayed in hostels in 2002 while backpacking after undergrad, and I paid anywhere from 12 to 18 Euros per night. I imagine it has gone up over the past decade.
Couldn't we have fun if those prices were valid today! Of course, I would not want to revert back to our income in those days!

In 1964, two Aussie uni friends and I purchased a Mini Minor in London, and set out to tour Scandinavia and Europe, from May to October. The guide book we used was "Europe on $5 a Day" (may have been Frommers) but, not counting the purchase cost of the Mini, we mostly managed on less than $2 each a day! We stayed in hostels (parking the car around the corner, and turning up with backpacks to keep the hostels' rules of the day) and we had a tiny tent for emergencies. It WAS possible!
We had a good time, but the biggest luxury was a special bath in Rome. Most hostels then had only cold water, and few showers.
BTW, friends of mine did the 26 day Pilgrimage walk from Lisbon to Santiago a couple of years ago. They stayed in hostels at the end of each day, and only paid about 5 euros a night. They were 72 and 70 at the time!
