So looking to spend a week somewhere on the coast where we can boot a small cottage in a village with a pub and maybe a restaurant or two if possible (or a fish a chip place!) and enjoy reall pretty scenic views.
We are pretty open as to where!!! it may even be finding the perfect little cottage for 2 that dictates the location so any cottage recommendations also much appreciated. We don't need activities as such, just prettiness!
We stayed in Polperro off season a few years back in cornwall and this was perfect as was right at coast, had a few pubs and some shops and restaurants. Off season we found this place great and our next trip will also be out of main season...maybe March. Happy to go back to cornwall or all the way up to the yorkshire coast...very flexible on this,
Prettiest Holiday Coastal Town/village with a pub in England/Wales!

In West wales, I love Solva, and any place along the west wales coastline.
http://www.solva.net/
or
have a look here:
http://coastalcottages.co.uk
Good luck
thanks Mucky....Solva looks like a definite option. It looks lovely in fact!
No contest, Southwold in Suffolk
http://www.exploresouthwold.co.uk/
http://www.southwold-holidays.co.uk/
Second link is to a local self catering lettings agency. Acanthus Cottages
As well as all the stuff you mentioned, Southwold has one of those huge "wool churches"
thanks missprism......have always been told nice things about suffolk so also could be great
ok - in no particular order_
devon -Appledore
Cornwall - Port Isaac, porthleven, Portscatho, Gerrans,
Wales - Aberaeron.
Not a village but still lovely with everything you require - Whitby, or maybe nearby Robin Hood's Bay.
Have a look at some places on the Dorset coast - Abbotsbury, Burton Bradstock, Lulworth Cove to name just a few.
thanks anne...hmmm st isaac appear to be pretty close to st endellion- which produces one of our yummiest cheeses!! that could be tempting
thanks too to hetismiji2 and megdorset...hmmm this is going to take a while
ann, is port isaac where that tv show was filmed to. Doc martin or somehting
Here's something that might encourage you to think of Port Isaac ie that doc Martin place:
http://www.endellionfestivals.org.uk/page24.html
as well as being cheesy, St. Endellion has been colonised by some top notch musicians who put on world class concert in this tiny village in north Cornwall.
if it's on while you are around it'll be well worth getting tickets.
Southwold or Aldeburgh in Suffolk. I used to live in Aldeburgh, and my daughter attended school in Southwold, so am partial to both. There are many other nice villages in the area, e.g. Orford, Saxmundham, Walberswick as alternatives.
On the south coast, you might want to look at
Lyme Regis
Lymington
Beaulieu
Bosham
Winchelsea
Rye
We absolutely loved Rye and surrounding area...close to the coast, lots of great places to eat and drink...
oh cool, thanks so much all. Thanks Chartley for all the places- will google them all
Hey jamikins, i used to go to rye as a kid and have a very strong memory of having fish and chips in a pub listening to Byran Adams -"everything i do" which was on its long run at number one.
Have no idea why this memory is so vivid! i do remember it being quite marshy. We had a caravan in ashford and rye used to be our day out!
and ann- port isaac is currently our number 1 option
thans too to Heim-2nd vote for southwold!
I do it for you!!! There's no love, like your love...and no other, could give more love...
Hahaha!
Not too far north of Port Isaac is Boscastle. not so much seaside as a slightly-inland harbour village, but no less picturesque for that. Good pubs too, both for beer and dining. Lots of places to rent including cut little cottages, the TI has info. I've rented a big house just above the harbour and Wellington Inn for several summers a few years ago.
jamikins.....i can smell the fish and chips as i read
hehe

thanks Julia...will go google Boscastle too. Big fan of Cornwall so totally happy to go down there again
http://www.bucklershard.co.uk/
http://www.themasterbuilders.co.uk/
no contest
good idea with Boscastle, Julia - I'd forgotten that one.
Decision made: Close cal between Solva and Port Isaac but we have gone with Port Isaac.....i should give another region a chance but there is something so lovely about Corwall!!

Booked a cottage in the village which appears to be net to the main pub....winning factor!
Thanks to all for your help and all the places have been noted for another time
Annhig..winning choice!!!
Bamburgh - no contest. How many other places have a castle on the beach and a heroine in the churchyard.
http://www.northumbria-byways.com/images/coastal_region_bamburgh_castle.jpg
oh thats looks cool!! on the list!!!
oh thats looks cool!
Definitely cool - in fact bleeding freezing
alanRow,
actually i think i used to go there as a kid! my mum (a geordie) tells me i have!!
great HG100 - now all we need to do is to pray to the weather god/s that this b...dy rain stops.
BTW - when are you coming?
haha ann, its actually being rather nice in london today.

We are actually not coming until next march!!! i am a bit obsessed with always booking all my holidays up super super (super!) early!!
very excited though
Falmouth, Cornwall or any village close.
Beautiful place.
thanks belted went to st mawes across the water last year...unquie little place, liked the feel of it very much

have gone with Port Isaac this time
haha ann, its actually being rather nice in london today. >>
we'll get our own back!
We stayed with this agency in the past. They have some incredible places on their books.

Delta cottage is Ben Ainslie's childhood home and explain how he gained the skills he did.
May be worth a look in the future.
annhig......as long as you do in next march
belted, thanks will take a look...love checking out new places!
belted...loving that site!
We love Corwall, bit like D & G but with posher yacht clubs
did you see the mention of the Pandora? it was burnt down in a huge fire just under a year ago, and they have done wonders getting it up and running again.
DH and I have promised ourselves a trip there - I'll report back!
I remember it being mentioned here last year, Ann. Was a little shocked, as we spent many memorable evenings on the pontoon there. God, how many eateries east of Bermuda allow you to dine on the water?
W old love to hear the latest, treat yourself!
bg - I will if/when it ever stops raining!
im confused...bermuda in cornwall.....can i go?!?!
HG001london :

Ann
Alex Trout (Salmond) reminds me of some dark figure from a Bond film. I think his master plan was to drain the south of water and have us sell you the stuff at a pound a bottle. Sort of make up for you pilfering our oil. Based on the past two weeks weather south of the Humber, the plan has failed badly.
haha !!!!
BG-yes the latter just edges it-but only just
so is the pandora inn still going?
Ann is the local expert!
Ann, where should out "don't miss" cornwall pub lunch be
HG - the Pandora has apparently re-opened after their catastrophic fire, but we haven't got there yet to see it in all its reconstructed glory. it had a very good reputation as a "gastro-pub" if a tad on the expensive side. [£10 crab sandwiches for example].
i don't really know any of the pubs in the Port Isaac area, but i'm willing to do some research between now and next March! I can certainly provide you with a list further afield.
aw thanks ann, we will have a car so quite happy to drive 1-2 hours each way for a really nice special pub lunch!! we love driving anyway

Looks like the pandora is definitely an option already!! ooh super excite-u are so lucky to live there
the gurnard's head pub on the promontory of the same name is nice [another gastro-pub] –
http://www.gurnardshead.co.uk/ - it's probably about an hour's drive from port Isaac, give or take.
moving round the coast, the old Coastguard at Mousehole [now under the same management] is also very nice. http://www.oldcoastguardhotel.co.uk/
in St. Mawes on the Roseland, the Rising Sun, though it gets very crowded.
At the difficult to find but worth the trip Perranwall Station - the Royal Oak.
and that's just for starters.
bookmarking
I love Cornwall, but don't like the drive to get there.
dittisham, Devon just outside Dartmouth

I love Cornwall, but don't like the drive to get there.>>
me too! [and i live here]. oh the sense of dread when you get to Exeter and realise that there's still another 100 miles to go.
OTOH, we do have those things called trains, and you can easily hire a car in Truro. or manage without one and use the buses.
flybe have services into Newquay from Gatwick [and i believe other places in the UK] and in the summer months there is even a weekly flight from Düsseldorf.
In The Times weekend supplement, there was the usual top 20 whatevers .....
This week "Summer Pubs"
3 of my favourites made it
- Trout in Oxford (Inspector Morse)
- FerryBoat in Helford Passage
- Pandoro in Restronguet
Here's my all time favourite
Dropped Pin
Each table has binoculars to watch the Orca, Huumpbacks, seals and otters go by.
ahh i needed to get that!!!

ok Pandoro on our list for our trip
where is the dropped pin? i could't find it
For the benefit of those who are too tight to venture beyond the Great Paywall - where is the "Dropped Pin"?
Dropped pins only seem to work on emails.
It's here :
http://dominiqueandtheinuit.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/point-no-point.html
Called Point no Point, Vancouver Island. Best view from any pub dining room I ever saw (from the cliffs over looking the Straits of Juan de Fuca) and food to match.
Any other votes for best position pub in the world?
oh my it has a jacuzzi??!!
http://www.amfuaran.co.uk/
is pretty amazing
it's the PandorA.
and Restronget is pronounced the proper cornish way, no poncy french dropping of letters, please!
All south of the Humber is bound to be poncy. So Restronguet it is!!!
