Prepaid cell phones
Question re cell phones. My son who lives in Europe has purchased two prepaid phones for my DH and me to use when we go to see him. He lives in Germany. He says calls within Germany are about 5c per minute, but we will arrive in Holland. Is it a "toll" call, to call from one country to another? We will also be meeting my sister in Venice, We will want to call her from Germany to Italy. We may also want to call Germany from Istanbul and Barcelona. Not sure how the system there works. Anyone know how all this works? He said the instructions that came with the phones are all in German, so found it difficult to interpret the details. Would we be able to call phone to phone on a cruise ship when in port? ship to shore? at sea?

Calls between countries no problem just the prices go up
Calls into Turkey the prices go up a lot
Ships in harbour no problem
Ships on the high seas, the ship may have a sat link in which case the price will go up to the satalite as well
We tend to text rather than call within Europe as the prices for data packets is far less than verbal stuff. So you may need to learn TXT SPK.

or call these foreign countries not using your phone but stopping at a place where they sell satellite calls for very little across the globe. They are much cheaper than cell phones. use this cell pone for emergencies, not chatting and you will be fine.

It's all very simple and easy to understand.
With a German SIM in Germany, all incoming calls are free to you, outgoig to EU countries depends on the SIM, usually 9ct/min to several €. In all EU countries, incoming with a German SIM will cost you 13,09ct per minute, outgoing to Germany will cost 41,65ct per minute. In or to other countries the same SIM may be extremely expensive. Provider generally are free to offer lower rates, but those 41,65ct and 13,09ct must not be exceeded.
Easy, right?
