Pre-booking colosseum tour tickets - help needed

My husband & I would like to prebook an English speaking tour of the colosseum including the underground and third ring sections. When we went on line to book on the official web site, we were not able to get tickets for June 24. We can't figure out if they are sold out or not yet available. Does anyone have info or suggestions for booking a tour and avoiding the long lines?

We used Walks of Italy and would recommend them. Good informative tour and reasonably small groups (about 10 I think).

It looks like sold out. If you go to http://www.coopculture.it/, and probe around your dates, 6/20 has 12:20, 6/21 has 10:40 and 16:20, 6/22 has 12:20 and 6/25 has 10:40 slots available. So it looks like the booking system is capable of showing availability if there is one. The 3,000 visitors at any one time restriction probably does not help, either.

The English-language tours sell out well in advance. For some reason, that tour is not very popular among Italians, which you can see by comparing the number of tours offered in the two languages.

For myself, I'd prefer just to buy the entry ticket. There are plenty of signs, in Italian and English, explaining everything. The Underground Tour appeals to the fascination with gladiators, while the main appeal for me of the Colosseum is the architecture, which you can appreciate best maybe from the exterior.

Hi Dgunbug,
Check out the Walks of Italy tours....they have excellent reviews and some quality tours...the VIP underground tour is sold out but the Premium Colosseum tour is still available for that date if that is the only day you have available to go see it.

I prebooked our tickets with Walks of Italy to the Colosseum Underground tour a month ago and we are not going to Italy until September!! Tours sell out quick!! we also booked with a tour group for the simple fact that we will learn much more with a guide as well as being able to skip the lines and get in and get learning!!
It is worth the extra money to me.

Good luck with your search!

PS. we also booked the Pristine Sistine tour with Walks of Italy as well and it looks amazing!!

We did both those tours with Walks of Italy Erin222 and they were fantastic, especially the Pristine Sistine. You're going to love it!

Thank you all for your comments. Guess we missed the boat on this one.

Wondering from those who have done the underground tour, how worthwhile do you think it is?

The underground tour was very worthwhile. I did it on my third visit, and I was able learn, see, and take picture from a camera angle I have not been able to take pictures before. I am returning to Rome again this fall and I plan to do the underground tour again.

Greg - thanks for your response. Does anyone else who did the underground tour have an opinion?

We did the English speaking tour- Underground and Third Tier over Easter this year. I booked through The coop culture website. I enjoyed the visit immensely and thought the tour and information added great value to the visit. Being able to view the Colosseum from so many vantage points and away from the bustling crowds was worth it to me.

I agree. We very much enjoyed the added vantage points when we took the underground and third level tour.
