Praiana to Positano

You guys have been so generous with your knowledge and advice that I have another question. For our trip to Rome/Naples/Amalfi Coast, I know we can take either a ferry from Sorrento to Positano and then get to Praiana via a taxi or bus or just simply take a taxi to Praiana from Sorrento. We'll be staying in two different towns on the Coast, Praiana and Positano (a few nights each). How would you travel with your luggage between the two? I can't imagine fitting on the SITA bus with bags in late June/early July. And boats can't go between the two, right? Cab again? There are things about each of the towns that really appeal to us, or we'd choose just one. The fact that Praiana is less easily accessible sounds great. And the fact that Positano has ferries in and out makes trips to Capri/Ischia/wherever more doable. Are both of these towns small enough to walk everywhere within the town, even at night? Thanks for all your help.

Lots of people take their luggage on the bus (it travels in the cargo area underneath). However, your challenge in moving between Positano and Praiano may be that the bus may be full when it arrives. One possible way of overcoming this might be to catch an early or late in the day bus (we found them far less crowded). Of course, smaller bags will be better too. Otherwise taxi I guess.

Also, I think you're better off taking the bus from Sorrento to Praiano rather than trying to get on in Positano because it starts in Sorrento and you're not getting on enroute when it's already packed. There was a reasonably orderly queue for the bus in Sorrento when we were there.

Personally, I don't think I could be bothered to pack up and move hotels for what's only a few kilometres.

All of this is with the caveat that I've only spent a week in the area and not at that time of year.

Ooops, your question about walking everywhere - yes, you can walk easily within the towns but Positano has a lot of steps. There is a local bus which loops Positano but we didn't use it so not sure about ticketing.

You are expected to put your luggage underneath yourself. When you get to your stop, make sure the driver knows you are retrieving your luggage or he might pull off before you have a chance.

I would just take a taxi.

I know you didn't ask for this but... I understand the desire to stay in two different towns on the coast to experience a busy, famous one like Positano as well as a lesser known, less accessible one like Praiano. But Praiano is so very close to Positano, it does not seem like the best way to contrast Positano. Have you considered a town further away like Minori, Cetara or Vietri sul Mare?

This isn't to say Praiano is a bad choice on its own. I do like Praiano. If you do stick with this plan I'd be curious to hear your impressions of the two towns.

It's looking more and more like we'll taxi it from Sorrento to Praiano (and yes, I realize I had an "a" instead of an "o" at the end of the name - silly me!). Anyone ever hear of Jack The Driver? Saw his name and limo business listed on a website that covered the Amalfi Coast. He and a few drivers cover the area, and looked like it might be the way to go. Or does anyone else know of a different, similar service? And I guess cabbing it with our luggage between the Praiano and Positano.

I realize Praiano and Positano are close to one another and we did consider Minori and some of the others, but they didn't appeal to us in the way Praiano did. It simply resonated for us. That's why we're making that choice. Plus, we're using Praiano as a restful stop, with either no day trips planned outside of it, except maybe to the next town for the Emerald Grotto. Positano will not only be a town for us to see for itself, but because of its proximity to the ferry, we'll also be using it as a base for day trips to Capri and some other places. And a SITA bus or taxi day trip to Ravello.

I'll be posting a trip report after our vacation, for sure!

As you found, there are a number of transfer companies out there. I have used a few different ones. I generally just get a fair estimate from a few different companies and check their reviews before booking one a couple weeks before I go. And a pre-arranged transfer service is what I meant to say, not just "taxi", sorry for that.

I'm a pretty firm believer that there is no bad spot on the Amalfi coast and when you're there, there is nothing better you could be doing at any given moment than what you are doing at that moment. Minori, Ravello, Praiano, Positano, etc., certainly none are dumps and you'll enjoy wherever you are.

Have fun

If you are coming from Naples, I would simply pre-arrange for a driver to take you from Naples to Praiano. Don't bother messing with the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento to save a few bucks.

The driver I always use to take us from Naples to Positano is Sergio Rianna. You can email him for a quote: [email protected]
