Prague, Vienna and Salzburg in 9 1/2 days
Hello,
I will be traveling to Europe in May. I have planned 41/2 days in Prague and will have an additional 5 days between Salzburg and Vienna. Can you suggest a good itinerary for those days. I plan to take the train from Prague. Should I travel to Vienna or Salzburg from Prague. Also, what train system would you suggest?
Thank you!

I guess I would consider the practicalities of arrival and departure from Europe - between North America and Europe? If so, and you'll start in Prague, you'd train to either Salzburg or Vienna and fly out of the other. I think you'll find flying out of Salzburg is more expensive than flying out of Vienna (though you could fly out of Munich instead of Salzburg).
Another question I'd have is: how scenic are the various train journeys? I've been to all three cities but taken a train only between Prague and Vienna. I don't recall it being amazingly scenic. Perhaps someone could describe the train scenery between Prague and Salzburg and between Salzburg and Vienna?
As far as "train system," I usually go with train that is most practical (most direct) but not overly expensive. The German train website usually is the best primary source of routing and sometimes cost:

Hi Andrew,
Thank you for your feed back. Since you have been to all three cities. How many days would you suggest to spend at each one? Any particular "must see" suggestions in all three cities?
Thank you in advance.

Hi K,
I would fly into Prague - 3 nights, train to Salzburg - 2 nights, train to Vienna - 3 nights, fly home, or VV.
There is more than one train line between Prague and Austria?
see www.bahn.de for schedules.

Hi Kirk,
from your thread title, i get the impression that your total trip is 9 1/2 days - perhaps I've got that wrong? how long is your trip overall? are your flights booked?
working on the premise that you are locked into flying into Prague and out of Vienna, you have several options of how to get between the three places by train. [though you might like to look at buses too!]
the main problem is the transfer from Prague to Salzburg as there are no direct trains. however you could turn that into an advantage by stopping off at the place where you have to change.
according to Bahn.de [the best europewide train timetable website] your choices are Landshut [no idea what that's like], Ceske budejovice, and linz. however, if you preferred, you could also go via Munich, which i think would be my choice.

Hi Annhig,
Thanks for all the information. Much appreciated. Actually, I am flying in from Cali with a stop over in Paris and then on to Prague. My original plan was 5 days Prague, then on to Vienna for 5 days and fly out of Vienna to Paris for 5 days and then on home. It mid stream I am thinking about other possibilities with my schedule. I have books the Paris r/t air but not the air from Vienna to Paris... Hope this all makes sense. Any suggestions?

Well, i assume that you have checked that you can get easily from Paris to Prague and from Vienna back to Paris, as Salzburg - Paris could be quite difficult [you can do it on airberlin, but at the moment fares for May are over €100]. [in fact I just looked and vienna to CDG isn't much cheaper!].
i think you just need to play about with a few planes and trains and websites and see how you can get around most efficiently. Paris, Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Paris is certainly do-able, if that;s what you want to do.

Um, i fyou really want to see Prague and Vienna why are you flying in and out of Paris. Assuming you want to see Paris, then do that first, complete the rest of your itinerary and return from Vienna - rather than wasting another day going back to paris to get home? Open jaws tickets are no more - andmay be less if you add the cost of flying around from Paris.
