Prague to Salzburg cheapest and most convenient option please

Dear Fodorites,

We will be travelling from Prague to Salzburg in May 2014. Please advise on which web site can I do the booking for the tickets and which is the most convenient and cheapest way of travelling. We will be 2 adults and 2 children of 12 years and 11 years. The cd.cz site in not user friendly and I am unable to get the fares on dbahn site.

Can someone help in recommending B&B / hotels in Salzburg.

Kind regards,
SKPKCP11

Are you trying to book more than 60 days out?

You could try the Austrian site:

http://fahrplan.oebb.at

I don't think the Czech site gives international fares and may not allow their purchase.

Convenient and cheapest is not often the same thing. With children I would take the train since they can get up and walk around if they get bored. On a bus they would not be able to do this. It's important on long rides.

I see some prices on the German site for the bus to Nurnberg and then the train to Salzburg.

There is a short connection in Linz on the train so you need to be ready and standing at the door when the train stops. It's 8 minutes which is no problem for 1 or 2 people but with children you'll need to get them moving.

I looked at the Czech site again and see trains from Prague to Linz (532CK for a random date in March). You'll need to change in Linz for the train to Salzburg.

Perhaps you should state your problem with navigating the Czech site so we can help you. I didn't have a problem with seeing schedules. Of course, I didn't complete the process and purchase a ticket.

The poster is probably trying to book too far in advance which would explain why the fares aren't showing up.

Thanks for the quick reverts. Yes, I was giving random dates for May. Now I have tried giving less than 60 days and it is giving me the options buy the fares are indicated in CZ and not Euro. Also, no details are appearing about the platform no. etc.

Can someone explain what the line below means :
4 x Včasná jízdenka Evropa, 2nd class, 1 person
I entered 2 adults and 2 children for passengers but am confused why is it reflecting in the end 1 person.

Also, in case we miss the connection which I feel is very short 8 mins with kids and luggage. Can we take the next connection? or do we lose the money and need to buy a fresh ticket.

Or should I just buy ticket till Linz and then a separate ticket on oebb from Linz to Salzburg? What are your suggestions?

Kind regards,

You'd get your platform number when you get to the station. Usually they're shown about 10 minutes before departure. There will be a large board(s) showing destination, departure time, platform (learn the Czech word for platform). These signs are the same as at airports.

Go to seat61.com to read more about Czech trains.

If the train from Linz to Salzburg is regional then you can hop on any train if you miss your connection. However, I can't figure out if any of the trains are regional. I do know that IC trains are not regional but I don't know if the others are and could not find any information on the web site that indications which are regional trains. Seat 61 will advise.
