We will be traveling from Vilseck, Germany to Prague on a Friday, tour Prague for the evening and part of Saturday and just want to go across the border of Poland on Saturday and go back to Germany on Sunday. We know this doesn't give us much time, but it is all the time we have. Do you think it can be done? Are there trains available from Prague to Poland? Or should we drive our car?

Hello, there are trains from Prague to Krakow; it's about an 8-hour train ride so I don't know if you have the time to go to Krakow. Will you be spending one night in Poland or just going for the day? I believe some people on this site have suggested to someone with a similar question that they go to Zelenia Gora. You should do a search for Poland on this site and see what you come up with. Too bad you don't have more time. We just returned from a trip to Prague and Poland and both places are fabulous! We were gone for 12 days which was not enough time.
I used http://www.vlak.cz/ConnForm.asp?cl=E5 and found this rather long connection
Saturday
Prague Hlavni station 1441
Starkoc 1651 to 1655
Mezimesti frontier 1800 to 1816
Walbryzych Glowny 1913 to 2028
Jelenia Gora 2157
When I tell you that the bus from Liberec on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 0630 reaches Jelenia Gora at 0850 you will see that the road connection is the fastest. But nothing gets you from Prague to Liberec so early, and no bus on this road fits your plans. Sorry.
I turned to the Thomas Cook European Timetable. To Germany on Sunday suitable trains might be
Jelenia Gora 0625, Wegliniec 0757 to 0800, buffet car train, Gorlitz 0832 to 0958, Cottbus 1122 to 1132, Berlin East 1256
Jelenia Gora 1531 Wegliniec 1656 to 1722, Zgorzelec 1800, bus 2 kilometers over the frontier, Gorlitz 1845, Dresden Hauptbahnhof 2007 to 2011, restaurant car train, Berlin East 2216
Sleeping car trains with 1, 2 and 3 berth compartments run nightly from Prague Hlavni 2116 to Krakow Glowny 0538. For a full night you can take a dog s leg trip via Warsaw: Prsgue Hlavni 2116, Warsaw Central 0648 to 0700, breakfast on board, Krakow Glowny 0935.
Then a choice
Krakow Glowny 0850, restaurant car train, Berlin East 1837 or
Krakow Glowny 2118, train with sleepers, Berlin East 0817

I missed a point on the route Jelenia Gora, Gorlitz, Berlin. There are quite a few busses straight from Jelenia Gora in less than two hours to Zgorzelec bus station, and two local busses an hour that take 20 minutes to cross the frontier from that bus station to Gorlitz station. Trains run every two hours on the pattern Gorlitz 0958, Cottbus 1122 to 1132 Berlin Ost 1256. So if you find the right bus at Jelenia Gora you could cover something like Zelenia Gora 0700, Zgorzelec bus station 0845 to 0900, Gorlitz railway station 0920 to 0958, Cottbus 1122 to 1132, Berlin Ost 1256, and then every two hours. I have shown you as headed for Berlin, but Gorlitz is also good for the route Gorlitz, change at Dresden, Leipzig, Fulda, Frankfurt am Main, Paris.
