Prague to Munich by train, with a stop along the way

I will be leaving Prague on November 1, and flying home to USA from Munich around November 6 or 7 (either alone or with my husband). Rather than spending the entire 6 days in Munich, I would like to spend a few days there and a few at some other city that is either on the way (by train) or just slightly out of the way. Any ideas about where to make the stopover, or about things to do, places to stay and eat in Munich and the stopover city? I like the idea of train travel so we can see some scenery.

You could stop over in Vienna for a few days. It is on the train route from Prage to Munich.

Regensburg would be a good stop for a couple of days. Also on an easy train route.

Hallstatt, Austria or Salzburg could be on the way if you went via Cseke Krumlov - stopping there in that neat old town and then going via Linz to either Hallstatt or Salxzburg before heading to Munich.,

Last fall I was in Prague prior to a river cruise.

In doing research, the trains are much slower than either a bus or a car service to one of the German cities on the Danube.

In fact, the bus service business has been thriving, with nonstops to Nuremburg or Regensberg. As our embarkation was in Vilshofen and my mother is elderly, we opted for a car service directly there. The price was pretty reasonable.

From either of these cities you can take the train into Munich.

Buses are the downmarket option in Europe - best avoided. Cramped seats, no space to move around, can't usually bring your own food or wine! Hardly good if you're on holiday!

Go to the Czech Railways site www.cd.cz/eshop

You can buy train tickets in either direction Prague-Munich or Prague-Nuremburg for just €19

Not all buses are to be avoided. Deutschebahn operates buses to Prague that are not only spacious and comfortable, they have a snack and drink service as well. And you can take your own food and drink. We did a nonstop service from Nuremberg-Prague last year, 68 euro for 2 round trip tickets. Not half bad.

Yes Man in Seat 61 could not be wronger about the Nurnberg and Munich to Prague buses - like yodababe says - comfy and much faster than the train - I too an a rail buff not not a knee-jerk one when it comes to where a bus is a much better option.

I'm curious about the car services. Never tried one. Roughly how much would the cost be for 2 people Prague to Regensburg? Any info about different services or links to get information and/or make reservations? Many thanks.

There is a daily direct train Prague to Regensburg and some all-train connections with only one change of train - others involve the bus to Nurnberg then a train to Regensburg - but these are straight forward - why do you wanta private car - go first class if you want a really relaxed ride with IME lots of empty seats to spread bags out on.
