Prague, Salzburg and Innsbruck
Hi My husband and I are looking at travelling next Sept. We would like to see Prague, Salzburg and Innsbruck but have no idea where else is best to see. We should have about 3 weeks. Any suggestions would be very welcome

If you let us know what you and your husband's interests are the suggestions will be easier to offer. Also, are you thinking of taking trains, driving?
To get you started, have a look at places around/between the three places you have listed and see if anywhere piques your interest.

We need much more info. How do you intend to travel? What is it that makes you want to go to these three locations in particular since they are not close together?
Why do you not intend to visit the obvious and highly attractive targets of Ceske Budejovice, Cesky Krumlov, Passau, Linz, Melk, Wels, on the way from Prague to Salzburg? Or - if you take the train on the direct route, why not Vienna?
Tell us more and we'll tell you more. Interests, budget, mode of transportation, that sort of thing.

We will be taking the train>
Well Switzerland is a natural component to any trip to Austria if you have time and trains are the way to go around Switzerland IMO - some Alpine areas don't even allow cars to penetrate above certain towns. Trains are great in Austria and the Czech Republic (especially if you get an Austrian train to Austria from it) - great sources for learning about trains in these countries - www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.oebb.at/en (official Austrian Railway site); www.budgeteuropetravel.com (download their free and superb IMO European Planning & Rail Guide for lots of rail itineraries in these countries (http://www.budgeteuropetravel.com/id2.html; www.ricksteves.com and eee.seat61.com.il.
Germany would also be a nice component, especially Bavaria - direct buses between Prague and Nuremberg and Munich make it easy to get to Bavaria - trains there are great and you can travel dirt-cheap on the bargain basement Bavarian Lander Ticket - bought locally at any station.

In Switzerland I'd go to the fantastic Jungfrau Region in and around Interlaken and stay in one of those cute Alpine towns like Grindelwald or Wengen - to me and others the Jungfrau Region is the absolute highlight of Switzerland - the dreamy picture of Switzerland etched in many folks' minds - glacier girdled peaks soaring thousands of feet from a lush valley.
Toy-like trains and thrilling aerial gondolas going everywhere - hiking paths for all abilities - the Jungfraujoch train to the highest train station in Europe and a sea of ice - walk thru ice caves and to a glacier...
the Jungfrau Region would make a great 4-5 day stop - so so much to do - lake boat rides on the two lakes bookending Interlaken - the famous Ballenberg Open-Air museum - the thrilling aerial gondola ride to the Schilthorn/Piz Gloria - made famous in James Bond's On Her Majesty's Service which was in part filmed here (Piz Gloria is the revolving restaurant shown in the film) - the Schilthorn is a rocky spit out in the middle of nowhere - 360 degree views of the Alps - yup this is a Valhalla for sure.
If going to Switzerland investigate the Swiss Pass that even in a few days can be a great deal.

Vienna is an obvious place to stop en route Budapest to Salzburg - and there is a great day trip from there to the Wachau Valley - the gorgeous stretch of Danube River just west of Vienna.
Take a train to Melk, tour the Uber famous abbey there - hop on a Danube boat to Dursntein - a cute wine town and take the bus or train to Krems to return to Vienna by train.
The Wachau Valley is at many places carpeted by vineyards dotted by picture-postcard wine towns.

If doing the Vienna-Melk-boat-Durnstein-Krems-Vienna loop there is an all-inclusive ticket you can buy I believe at the train station in Vienna that includes train fares, Melk abbey admission, the boat and train back to Vienna.
