Prague, Rome or Amsterdam
I've been given the choice of the 3 cities to do a long weekend in August... I love the sounds of rome and always wanted to visit prague but I'm unsure on where's the best to go. I've never been to any of the 3 cities so have no idea about any of them. I guess I'd like to go someone hot, somewhere I can see lots of new things and somewhere the locals are friendly and a beautiful city of course! Can someone shed some light onto my hard decision please??

Rome is hot in August so the locals go elsewhere. Also, for a long weekend in Rome, you would need to be a very unusual person not to want to see the most famous sights -- and what that means is that you will be spending all your time with mobs of foreign tourists.
If you would like to "go someone hot, somewhere I can see lots of new things and somewhere the locals are friendly and a beautiful city of course! " -- try Naples or Palermo or some other very very southern Italian city where the locals stay put for August, and most of their family returns from other more prosperous places to visit them. Siracusa, Lecce, Martina Franca, Tropea are possibilities. You might also like Barcelona or Nice

Cross off Amsterdam for hot - warm maybe maybe not but rarely hot.
Rome always hot in August
Prague iffy hot.
So if hot -sweltering hot is the criteria it's Rome.
Rome super crowded with tourists in Augusts but few locals as they flee the city for seaside or northern Europe on their month-long holidays.
No one can recommend one over the other except for being hot or not - all exude cultural attractions though Rome has more famous things than the others.
If young Amsterdam is a town that hops at night and also has a surfeit of cultural stuff- world-class museums and to me the most visually gorgeous of the three. also has unique coffeeshops where folks legally buy cannabis from posted menu boards over the counter at numerous coffeeshops and use it there - that's a special niche that some may like but may turn off others.

You might want to consult some good guidebooks, perhaps at your local library.
Anywere in Italy would be too hot for me in August – but if you seriously want high temperatures, Rome is generally hotter than Prague or Amsterdam in August. You can check historical climate data at wunderground.com or any number of other sites.
If by “hot” you mean “hopping,” then Prague or perhaps Amsterdam….
Personally, I like to plan my trips so that the time I have is closely matched to the time I want for a place or set of places. By that criterion, I wouldn’t go to Rome – too much to see in just one long weekend! Depending on what you want to see and experience, either Prague or Amsterdam might better fit within a long weekend….
Have fun!

Rome is not always hot in August. I've often needed a cardigan in the evenings. However, it's more likely to be hot than Amsterdam is, and maybe slightly more likely to be hot than Prague.
Both Rome and Prague are likely to be very crowded in August. I would suggest skipping the famous sights and seeking out the hidden gems. I imagine Amsterdam is pretty crowded in August also, but I haven't been there in August for a long time.
