Prague National Theatre- Help with Choosing Box Seats 1st Timer ...

Hello everyone!
Me and my 12 yr old son are going to see Enchantina on August 27, 18:00hr. Being August, there wasn't much to choose from, but this one looks lovely & grand!

www.narodni-divadlo.cz/en/show/5691…

This will be both our first times going to an Opera/Performance of this sort and are looking forward to being in such an amazing theatre and getting all dressed up!

I want the very best seats since the next day is my birthday

my choices are:

Ground Floor Boxes 4 or 7

Dress Circle Box 12 (I think this is too close to the stage)

Upper Circle Boxes 7 or 8

Any comments & advice are very much welcomed

Thanks a million!

Thanks unclegus! I'm having a hard time getting responses, maybe its not as popular as the Opera house? not sure... have you ever sat in ground box seats? my fear is that the ground box seats will be lower than the stage, and might not be the best view... and that the circle boxes (2 stories up) might be too high up...

There's no seats available on the first floor
Again any help appreciated!

BTW, I read your report & loved it! thanks for taking the time!

Rastaguytoday... My mom corrects me on that every time... but at my age... i doubt there's much i can do about it... however, if you are going to take the time and post just to correct my grammar!, at least be decent enough to answer or attempt to help me in my question.

Happy Friday!

This is just a personal preference, that's all. Some people prefer ground and other people actually prefer to view the stage from a higher angle. I have my preferences, I always prefer ground for dance but for other things, I don't care that much (orchestra or opera).

So yes, I would say if it is ground vs. upper circle ground is better, but if you don't care yourself because you have no experience with theaters and have no preference, upper circle might be fine. It isn't that bad, at least it isn't the balcony which is pretty far away in that theater. What might be more important is what seats you are trying to get, front seats in the dress circle in box 12 could be better than a rear seat in the upper circle in box 7. And then, the seat farthest from the stage (seat 3) is almost no different angle from the stage in dress circle box 12 than seat 1 in the grand circle box 7.

Upper circle box 7 or 8 isn't bad if you have the front seats.

the only box seats I have been to in Prague was in the Estates theatre (lovely place BTW) which is a pretty small place and the seats were actually at a pretty awkward angle.

Nothing to do with seat or theatres but as you are taking your 12 y o son i have an idea for a nice little cheap treat you can give him.
In the castle area there is Golden lane you can enter as part of one of the tour tickets for the area( or pay seperately),in there is an armoury museum on the upper level of the battlement area,at the end of this is an area where you can use an old fashioned cross bow,3 arrows for 50kc($2), what 12 y o would not like a shot of that.I am in my late 50's and I still like going up there trying to hit the tragets.

I think a lot of box seats are at awkward angles and am surprised people want them. The ones that are nearest the stage are like that, as you have a bad angle. That was what yv was referring to about box 12, it is only several boxes down from the stage on one side. But I think both these theaters have the horseshoe-shaped tiers with box seats going along all of them so the box seats at the curve of the horseshoe (towards the rare of the theater) have a pretty good view, which the ones on the sides close to the stage do not. Unless you just like the view from the side, which I don't.

Thanks Christina!
Still debating in my head between ground floor boxes 4 or 7 (front seats) or Dress Circle box 12 front seats... I always seem to procrastinate over these things... thanks for your help!

unclegus! thanks for the info! He would love love love that! I need something fun for him... as I fear 14 days of "culture" might be too much for a 12 yr old! ja ja

so, the Armour museum is that the Daliborka that you go up through house #12? I assume there will be someone there we can pay to shoot the arrows?

yes Christina! exactly my concern
box 12 might be too close to the stage and have only a view of the side...

I might be better off with ground floor boxes 4 or 7 ... close to the "Curve" of the horseshoe... but will I be too far or is that close enough that I won't need binoculars? I really don't want to pack these... or buy any for that matter... Ja Ja! I don't own any

unclegus - sometimes the brain is way too fast for the finers.

I tried to stop the post, but no such luck.

Yes, I know how to spell.

This is the only sentence that I accept that starts with Me.

That sounds like an interesting opera for kids, and should have some interesting sets and costumes, so the spectacle (not just singing) is important. Ground floor box 4 or 7 is not too far back, it's only about row 10 and is much closer than the upper circle, of course. For a spectacle like that, you actually get a little better persepctive if you aren't in the first 6 rows or so. I think I'd probably choose box 7 (which is closer to the stage, but still doesn't have a bad angle), especially if you get seats 2-3. I think box 4 would also be fine as it curves around a bit at that point so is slightly more direct a view.

Dress Circle box 12 isn't really that close to the stage is it is not on ground floor, but it is to the side so not as direct a view, which I think you realize.

Unclegus, thanks for the link and all your help! My son will love it! Out of everything we are going to see, he did mention several times (as to not let me forget) that he wants to see the castle both in the daytime and night time, he seems to be fascinated with it from the pictures we've seen, so this bow arrow shooting and armory museum will be the highlight of the trip!

Christina, thanks a million!! exactly was I was looking for, these are things that you cannot tell from looking at a seating chart alone and really is best determined from someone who has experienced theaters like this one. Now I can happily go buy my box seats!
Happy Saturday !!

Hi,

I always look for seats that are located closest to the center of the aisle. That will give you the best view no matter how close or far away from the stage. It is the angle that scenic designers draw from. The box seats on the side are artifacts from the long ago age when the reason for going to the theater is more for looking across the aisle at (famous/rich/notable) people than the performance.
