I'm going to be in Prague for 8-nights in May. I've never been before and have just started researching hotels. Given the length of my stay, comfort and a degree of luxury are important to me.

It seems that there are a lot of 5 star hotels in Prague. It also seems to me that many of these "5 star hotel" are really 4 star properties.

Sure, I would love to stay at The Four Seasons; however, it and the MO will simply be too expensive for a long stay.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated

I stayed at the Old Town Square hotel last December. I am not sure about the star rating, but it was really nice. The best part was the heated bathroom floor and huge tub. The rooms have high ceilings with chendeliers and some overlook the square. IMO, the location can't be beat. If you have any significant problems with ambulation, I would not recommend as there is only one lift and it is not always accessible due to it's location in the restaurant on the ground floor. When the restaurant is closed, you have to use the stairs at the other entrance. Also, I loved the tub,but it is not an easy in/out as it has high sides. The staff were also very helpful. I don't really know if places that say they are five star are or not (and I don't know the Czech official system), but the ones that I see as five star are pretty nice. I guess it depends what you expect, over the top luxury may not be in some of the ones you found, I guess that's true. I have never stayed in a five star hotel anywhere but in Prague, so am rather ignorant on what that might mean elsewhere (although I have an idea).

Anyway, the one five star I've stayed at in Prague (and I guess anywhere in the world now that I think of it) is the Hotel Pariz. It is a lovely hotel with excellent service and a great location. The room was very comfortable and nicely decorated, also, so I couldn't ask for anything more.

But I'm not really a demanding luxury-seeking type of person, so am not sure what you might be expecting. I just want a nice room and don't really require any special services and never use them. They did have a car service that they arranged for me (arriving at the airport and going by train), and they have a nice lobby bar, so that's all I cared about.

Anyway, I guess you might take a look at the Hotel Pariz. I kind of like places that are local and with history, and it has that. www.hotel-pariz.cz

There are not that many 5* hotels in Prague by American standards - yes - quite a few are what we wold call 4*. I think you should stop worrying about the number of stars and decide on what location you want and which amenities - and go on from there.

We just spent 5 nights in a beautiful apartment in Prague which I would highly recommend. They call it a 4-star for whatever that's worth, but it was a beautiful fully equipped modern apartment in a great location on Karolina Svetle. We had 2 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, full kitchen, living room, even a washing machine, and daily maid service. There was no front desk or concierge but security building. We paid about $200 per night. Friends stayed in the Pachtuv Palace, had about the same amount of space and paid $350 per night. Go to www.prague-city-apartments.cz. I'll put in another vote for the Pariz. It's a very good (but, paradoxically, quiet) location and it has a fabulous morning bruch that usually goes with the room.

10 four to five star hotels have opened in Prague in the last year, the latest being the kings Court. The Sheraton in March, The Kempinkski, The Buddha Bar hotel (see this review http://tinyurl.com/create.php ) and several others. The rates on the websites are high but get a deal! The hotel industry here is having big big problems, over 650 hotels and not enough visitors so the big hotels are really discounting, Marriott rooms for EUR 50.00, Hilton Old town USD 80.00. Contact the hotels direct and lock in a price now, you will be surprised!

I just read an article that said the Mandarin Oriental was very nice in Prague. I didn't even know there was one.

Last winter we stayed at the Praha Palace and found the location and accomodations to our liking:

This website is not aimed to tourist but business travelers. You might get a good idea there.

Happy New Year Everyone! Thank you so much for your help. After much research, I contacted The Kempinski Hybernska Prague. They offered me an amazing rate of less than 200 Euros a night (including breakfast)for a Grand Deluxe Room. It has everything I was looking for in a hotel-- and more. I was very lucky!

Honestly, this was really a case of it can't hurt to ask... I sent an e-mail to an individual (rather than a general e-mail addressed), gave them my dates and asked what my options were. Frankly, I was floored when I opened the e-mail. The rack rate on my room is over 500 Euros a night.

Also, fyi, the 4S offered there lowest category room with the guarantee of a one category upgrade for 350 Euros a night. The MO never even responded.

I guess we know who will be getting my business gping forward.
