Prague for a week?

Prague for a week?
do you think there is enough to do in Prague for a week including the surrounding area? I'm considering planning a trip there for September as a surprise for my husband (he loves surprises in case you're wondering). We would have 7 days not including travel to and from. I really prefer to have a home base rather than hop around everywhere.

I think so. I spent 5+ full days in Prague and didn't run out of things to do. My visit included going running in the mornings, lots of museums and hanging out in parks, though, so maybe if you don't like a relaxed pace a week would be too long.

I spend 2 speparate weeks each year in Prague and sometimes a few other weekends.Lots to do.Lots of easy day trips. I love visiting the micro-breweries in and around the cityand usually take in a football game or two.
Give us someideas of you are your husbands interests and we can make soem suggestions other than the standard tourist stuff.

This one is run by a friend of mine Jason who is englisg, we usually meet up for a meal and or drinks when we are both in the city.Loads of info on that site about hotels and restuarants ,sometimes has 2 for one offers and discount vouchers as well.
September is a nice time to visit,still warm but the craziness of July and August has died down a bit.loads of places to sit out for a drink,i like the beer gardens about the city.

Leely2: yes I do like a slower pace because I like to mix sightseeing with soaking up the culture sitting in parks and cafes and walking around.
My interests are history, architecture, parks/gardens, art, beautiful landscapes, and culture. Pretty much everything! My husband would add food and drink. He will enjoy sampling the beer.
Any recommendations would be great.

I am heading to bed soon and will be busy all day tomorrow,i will put a few suggestions about parks& gardens for you and a few suggestios for place sto eat and drink.Lots of great places to drink.But can i just ask what age group are you both in ,myself i am late 50's so there is no point in me suggesting stuff for that age group if you are a great deal yopunger

Yes, you can easily spend a week there and in day trips.
Be sure to head to the city hall as soon as you arrive for great info and services:
Low cost walking tours of various areas of the city lead by people from the university - fascinating and often small groups. We loved the architectural tour of the old town.
Incredible music scene from grand opera to jazz, pop and whatever (see the opera house if you can). Sign up for several.

Besides the regular attractions, I love the Mucha museum. Also, there are a number of day trips--Kutna Hora, Terezen (sp), Cesky Krumlov that may interest you. We've been there about 4-5 times, are going back in March, and still have a lot of things to see that we missed in prior trips.

We spent five days in Prague and loved it. You can easily spend a week. Have you considered renting an apt? We really enjoy renting apts for our stays of 3 days or more. It's fun shopping locally for food and cooking some of our meals. Keeps us on track budget wise also. We also love having our own space to come back to during the day.

Very very quiet area, just a block to the tram. One night after we had been back at the apt for a few hours, even getting ready for bed, we decided to go back out to the bridge. It was midnight, the bridge was basically deserted, but the soft lighting was still on, reflecting off the water. We strolled hand in hand across the bridge to the old town and back. Got back to the apt around 1 am...one of our best memories in all of our travels.

Yes, five days will keep you busy and happy...what more can one ask. Here attached below, are some "familiarization" ideas for the city. It was one of the first cities in that part of Europe to go through a massive rebuilding phase in the early years of the 20th century.
I would recommend Terezin (Theresienstadt) and it's K-Kamp for a day trip.

You can easily spend more than 5 days in Pretty Prague. We were there in winter, which gave it a very special feeling. To give you an idea, you can scan through my TR of the time:

this place is just on the outskirts of the city, beautiful botanic gardens,real easy to get to but you have to take the metro then the bus, but 40-50 minutes in total from the City center.

letna Park is an easy walk from the center but you can get a metro or tram to the higher side, great beer garden that over looks the city as well as Hanavsky pavillion a with stunning views, nice place for a meal,not cheap but the views are worth it.

Stromovka park is lovely too and there are cafes and rstuarants with the park, numerous entrance points and you can enter through one and leave by the other,lots of place to eat and drink around the park,the Zoo and Trojka castle are on the north side of the park,worth heading out there and walking through the park to the exhibition grounds.

there are also smaller gardens within the city and the links i gave you earlier will have info on them. My friens Stu Tower suggest Terezin and it is well worth a visit, huge area ,actually a small town really but increadibleplace and easy to visit by yourself or with a tour group.

I play a game called Tram dice,roll 2 dice and head in one direction for odd and the other for evens, roll again and go that number of stops or the end of the line whichever is first,you than have to go into the first pub you find and have a beer,you then start again.
Hope you have a great tiem organising your trip and an even better time In Prague.i have just booked another trip for the Beer festival/World Ice hockey Championships in May.

You won't get bored in Prague!! A fabulous city, one of the nicest in Europe in my opinion. The city itself will keep you amused for a week, but there are so many places to visit outside of Prague also, I would reccommend a visit to the village of Karlstejn just to the south of Prague - there is a pretty historic village and very impressive castle to see Enjoy your trip!
