prague districts 1234

I want to stay within walking distance of St Vitas, The Charles Bridge - but which district is that? Looking for a central hotel to stay and walk to these places comfortably.

I like the Mala Strana district, which is on the west side of the river at the Charles Bridge and slightly to the north. The Old Town east of the river is not bad either. Prague is pretty compact and a great walking town.

Note that just to the west of the river, starting in Mala Strana, there's a huge hill leading up to the castle and the cathedral. I once booked a place that turned out to be in the middle of the hill - not always fun to walk up the hill to get to my lodging...

I would also recommend Mala Strana, since we stayed there in May. Hills are a problem on that side of the river, however, so I would suggest you choose accommodations close to tram or Metro line stations so you can minimize climbing hills and stairs. Our hotel was near the Malostranska Nemiski tram stop close to the American Embassy, which put us within five minutes walk from the Charles Bridge.

That said, the transport system for the city is really superb. You can stay quite a distance from the center, and be there in moments on the frequent trams, buses, or Metros. You will find that the accommodations a bit out from the center are much more reasonable, as are restaurant prices.

yeah, you want Mala Strana. IN fact, you can walk those places from the other side of the river, and there are plenty of hotels not that far frm the bridge.

The castle is at the top of the hill, I really don't think you'll be walking there a lot, will you? A tram goes right there, anyway. I walked down from it, though. I suggest you stay in the flatter parts of Mala Strana.

Mala Strana is an area or neighborhood. If you mean "district" the way Prague maps define it, you want Prague 1.
