I'm planning our trip to central Europe for next year and found an apartment I really like, located at 23 Janackovo Nabrezi, at the northern end of Smichov, Prague 5, on the river. Is too far out of the heart of Prague to be comfortable walking back and forth? It appeals to us because it would probably be a bit quieter there. I've read reviews of several apts. in Mala Strana, where I'd really like to stay, criticizing the noise level. Thanks for helping out.

I'm afraid I'm not a resident of Prague so this may not be enough info to help you, but we just got back from the city and stayed in the area you're thinking about.

It looks like the street is a main one and could have significant traffic. But as the case with our hotel, it may be that there are rooms (or bedrooms) on the back side away from the noise. No way of telling unless you ask I guess. Getting to the tourist areas won't be a problem. We walked all the way on occasion but were more likely to take the trams which were easy and frequent. Looks like you'll only be a couple blocks away from several lines.

Perhaps you could ask your question on another forum - looks like CraigsList Prague isn't very active but there seem to be expats-in-Czech sites around.

Never travel without good earplugs. Used them alot this trip since we had to open the windows this time of year.

I'm not really familiar with that particular street, either, but it is a major street going along the river, and there is a big coach/car park nearby. I would guess it's about a mile from Old Town Square. I wouldn't want to be walking that far regularly (to there nor the castle area or nar Charles Bridge), but you could. It's near a bridge, and a bus that goes over it, though, would be nearby (bus 176). that bus goes over to the Karlova namesti metro stop. There would also be some tram stops that would go up towards the castle area, but I don't know exactly how far away from the hotel they would be -- several blocks, I think. That area has a lot of newer buildings and major streets.

I wouldn't choose that location if you think you are going to want to be walking a lot from tourist sites. YOu can get an idea of others' opinions by searching Tripadvisor for the Riverside Hotel which is very near that apartment's address and see what those people said about the location.

I wouldn't pick a place on the outskirts just to avoid noise. There are plenty of places in Prague that will be quiet or will have some quiet rooms, and how do you know this place will be quiet anyway?

Mala Strana is pretty nice. If you do wind up staying there, make sure the place you get is not up a huge hill! When I stayed in Mala Strana in September, the rooms I rented (sort of an apartment) were nice but it was 1/3 of a mile of a fairly steep hill (toward the castle, up Nerudova street). Terrific surroundings, but that steep walk home after a long day of walking around Prague just didn't work for me! If I could find another place in Mala Strana next time that wasn't up the hill I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Thanks to all for the help. Luckykat, I had looked at your suggestion don't really want to spend that much. I know several people have stayed in Mala Strana at the apartments on Vlasska -- is that too steep a climb? How noisy is that area -- it looks like it's close to the US embassy? Andrew, I know the apt. on the river is quiet because it fronts the river away from the traffic, and also from correspondence with the owner. I'm just concerned about its distance from most of the things we're interested in visiting, although the reviews of the Riverside Hotel indicate that distance was not a problem for most guests there. Thanks again for the help.

I have a map of Prague with the Tram/Metro/Bus stops. You would definitely need to use some form of public transporation or you would be doing a lot of walking. You have a bus line on one side and a tram line on the other side, but depending on where the apartment is on the street, it looks like you might still have a good walk to the stops. It is a long ways from the main sightseeing area. The only thing that I know of in that area is the Andel Shopping Mall. I don't remember being in the area except to go to Andel.

I've stayed on Vlasska before. It's not noisy, because it's a small, narrow street. The hill is not that bad, but you will be about half way up the walk to the castle, so you'll end up walking uphill at some point. Nice location though.

Since it is on the same thoroughfare as the US embassy, if you take a taxi or drive there, your car will be searched by guards. This will take a few extra minutes, etc, because the street is highly protected/watched. (which is a good thing!)
