Hello. I will be visiting London, and I was wondering if there are many places to get posters and/or prints depicting scenes from London. I remember seeing many of these types of posters in Paris, and I bought one of the Eiffel Tower. I think it is a print of an old advertisment. I loved the ones that were in Paris, and was curious if they have similar ones in London. Sorry if this is confusing - does anyone know what I mean?<BR>Thanks,<BR>Tracy

Hi,Tracy-I do not know the name of this store but I can tell you exactly how to get there<BR>I and friends have gotten great vintage posters here, my daughter and I have a collection of the 1020-1930's Underground advertisements..in Covent Garden, standing in front of the row of shops in FRONT of Covent Garden-on the left, is a small poster shop-that's it!<BR>Maybe someone on here will know the name but it is a great shop.<BR>If you want to go for more money, we have also gotten a couple of original vintage posters at an Antique building off of Edgeware Road called Alfies..but these are pretty pricey.Have fun~c

Sorry-I remembered another one~<BR>on Beauchamp off of Brompton Road is a shop called The Map House..they have wonderful prints, some expensive,some not.It is worth going there just to enjoy looking at their inventory.We got 2 prints of birds done by some Audubon kind of painter..When we had them framed at home, the framer recognized the artist and said that we got a good price~

I would like to find them with pictures of buildings/landmarks that are distinctive to London. The one that I got in Paris looks very "antique", and I love it!

There is a wonderful place on the rue de Seine called GAlerie Documents.They can be expensive but they had some things that were smaller and not so dear.It is near rue de Buci.That entire street is full of galleries and they usually have posters for a show that they are doing, I have gotten some great posters from certain galleries,just look at all the windows of the shops in the neighborhood,they will have the posters on the windows advertising for the galleries~also-the Louvre has shops in the arcade downstairs with posters.

When I visited Camden Market about 2 or 3 Saturdays ago (Jan 02) with a visiting Fodorite we all went home with some stunning black and white photographs of London.<BR><BR>We found the photographer selling his prints on the top floor of the building containing lots of craft stalls and shops, come out of Camden station, walk up the street towards Camden market, continue and cross over the canal and the building is immediately on your left.<BR><BR>Of course, he may not be there when you go, I don't know that all the stalls are that permanent.<BR><BR>But his prints were stunning, great quality and incredibly good value.<BR><BR>He was there with his identical twin brother who was helping him with the stall.<BR><BR>Kavey

I got my print from Paris in a shop across from the train stain at Versailles (sp?). I also saw some in shops in the Latin Quarter and also in many of the outdoor stalls along the Seine. The one that I got was very inexpensive (probably less than $10), but it is very interesting (it's an advertisement for a circus-type event, and it has the Eiffel tower in the background). It has very thick paper, and a patina look to it.<BR>Kavey- I love B&W photography...I will check that place out. Thanks!

I just remembered! We got some great not too big posters at the booknistes along the Seine on the Left Bank..they sell old books,postcards,vintage-and posters..We got our son the Chat Noire poster, old and in great shape for about $10-USD, and the one with the little girl drinking cocoa with her cats, cheap!...check there while shopping around~

As long as we are on the subject:<BR><BR>There used to be a "fight crime" type of poster in London (possibly late 1980's). It had two frowzy women climbing stairs to a nightclub. A man was walking down the stairs and eyeing the women. The caption at the bottom was "Who's watching your bag?"<BR><BR>I still laugh when I think of this poster because the women were so comically drawn. Any suggestions on where this (or a reprint)might be found. You can either post or email me.

I did some searching on some websites and found that these vintage posters are running $350 and up. Are they that much in Paris and London? Do they have newer, cheaper large poster prints? How do you go about bringing home these 5 foot posters? Are there tubes that long that I can check in on the plane?

There is vintage and there is vintage! You can definitely get something that is good to look at and that will please you and that is not too expensive.The posters we bought along the Seine are beautiful, repros, but who cares, if you like the picture and it is affordable? There is a shop on the rue de Seine, she only sells posters/original works by Jean Cocteau-I wanted a Cocteau so much! but while browsing through her stock, it became clear to us that it would really be costly..so we took a walk and thought about it.Decided that the poster we had seen would be good enough, it would remind us of the trip,and not cost more than about $100-usd.So we went back to the shop, and she had sold it! So-timing is everything! But-we are finding that posters are becoming a little more expensive in Europe because,as one lady at a poster shop in London said that "All you Americans want big posters for your walls now"~we usually get a tube from the people that sell us the poster..if you do not get one, it will be rolled up and wrapped in brown paper.Then what I do is put them in the suitcase,along tha "backbone" of the suitcase,and they always make it home ok.c

sorry-if you get a poster that doesnt fit your suitcase, then you will have to put it in a mailing tube-which you can carry on-in that case-the person who sells it to you will most likely have a tube-if you must buy a tube, they sell them at the poster shops in the Louvre,D'Orsay(maybe) and if you can manage with the language,the Post OFfice.

The Transport Museum in Covent Garden, London, has postcards and posters of old railway advertisements showing many UK landmarks and landscapes (you can get into the shop without visiting the museum).

OK- I have been searching the web also, looking for these posters. There is a great site that I found called barewalls.com. They are very reasonable, but not original or valuable (doesn't matter to me!). I will wait until we go to London to purchase anything, but I enjoy looking anyway!<BR>I will check out the Transportation Museum - I wouldn't have thought of that!<BR>When I bought my poster in Paris, I was able to purchase a very sturdy tube from the shop. I brought it on the plane with me (carry-on). However, it was not nearly 5 feet long.
