post cruise in Rome - suggestions

My husband and I will be arriving at Civitavecchia (port near Rome) at the end of our cruise this August. We would like to extend our vacation a few days. Does anyone know if there are car rentals at the port and if so can you return the car to the Rome airport?

Also, and more importantly, what are some suggestions of where to go? We enjoy driving the countryside and also enjoy interesting cities. We're thinking of 2-3 additional nights before we head home.

Thanks!
Linda

North to Florence is beautiful, and you can spend a few days driving through Tuscany and stopping at small towns. If you want to go south, you can do Naples, Pompeii and Terracina. Both directions are excellent and neither is very far from Rome.

Are you taking time to see Rome? Because it would be a shame to be there and miss it.

We have been to Rome a number of times so thought we'd explore somewhere else. We're hoping not have to go into the city to get a car to save some time. We were in Florence a few years ago although not through the countryside.

We'll be in Naples one day on the cruise. We've been to Pompeii, but don't know Terracina. Is that something we could do on our day in Naples?

The other stops on the cruise where we've never been before in case someone has some thought about what to see include Bari, Catania, Kotor, Split, Koper (planning tp go to Ljubjlana), and Valetta.

We want to book our flights but first need to resolve what to do after Rome and for how long.

Thanks again.

You can pick up a car in Civitavecchia and return it at the Rome airport. How early would you be able to drive away from Civitavecchia? Two nights somewhere is only one full day.

Have you been to Viterbo and/or Orvieto? The drive from Civitavecchia would take you (with slight detours) past Tarquinia, Sutri, Lake Bolsena, Civita di Bagnoregio and through Viterbo. Depending on your timing and/or how many stops you make, you could stay in/near Viterbo the first night or go all the way to Orvieto. There's a lot to see in all of these places.

The drive from Orvieto to the Rome airport is at least two hours (not counting time to return the car). Depending on the time of your departing flight, it might be safer to spend the last night at/near the airport, so three nights post-cruise would be ideal. One night Viterbo, one night Orvieto, one night airport.

Thanks Jean.

We have never visited the towns or the sights along the way you suggest. I'll start to look into these right away. It seems like a good itinerary and do-able. If possible we'll try to fit in the 3 nights depending on flights available. I may come back with some more questions once I know what I'm doing.
