Possible change of plans - Venice instead of Florence. Need Venice hotel help.
I have been posting needing advice for Florence and Tuscany. I am feeling frustrated with the logistics so am thinking that perhaps we should just fly into Venice instead, then after a few days to Rome and on to Positano as planned. Skip Florence, been there done that. We've never been to Venice so completely ignorant other than the bit I've read the past day or two. I need advice on nice, central hotel or B&B. I would like to spend no more than about $125 per night as we are blowing our wad on hotels in Rome and Positano. Does anyone have first hand, we-stayed-there-recently, it-is-charming, clean, loved-it-to-death advice? Thanks!

We stayed at Ca Bernardi - a B&B (hostess named Amelia - an American).
Wonderful breakfast, beautiful patio area. Very helpful.
I think finding a room for $125 (or even 125 Euro will be VERY difficult in Venice. Venice is incredibly expensive (must more so than Florence). We paid 155 Euro per night (cash - credit card was 165 Euro)

Depending on time of year and type of room Pensione La Calcina might work.

Thanks for the head's up on prices in Venice. Some of the suggested places you all have listed are over 300E per night. I will try to find something among your suggestions that will work, guess we'll have to go over the budget. So what else is new?! Wondering - are there any convent/monasteries in Venice proper that anyone can recommend?

We stayed here:
http://www.cabonvicini.com/
For four nights two weeks ago. Its a great location and a very reasonable price. The owner speaks English and is very helpful. The rooms are small, but beautiful. The room has ensuite bathroom. Our room was on the first floor and had a small canal view.
We only paid about 90 or 100 Euros per night.
This was quite a find!

Stayed at this nicely located B&B in May for 120 euros for a triple room:
Ca'Turelli; found it on veniceby.com
Stayed at this lovely little (maybe 5 rooms)hotel 3 years ago, so not sure of current prices, but may still be in your price range, or close:
Casa Martini -- casamartini.it
It is run by a charming, young, helpful Venetian couple. I can't recommend it enough!

Yikes, Ca'Bonvicini looks fabulous. I emailed them for rates. Keep my fingers crossed! Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll look into them if Bonvicini falls through. Guess we'll just have to continue to eat pb&j sandwiches till June to pay for this!

Look at www.tripadvisor.com. You can limit the search to a price range and read the reviews. Whatever you do, stay in Venice proper, not the Lido, not Mestre or further out.
Flying into Venice is a great idea. (The view from the air is marvelous.) And Venice is a good place to get over jet lag.

Our room was not quite as elegant as the one in the picture, but it wasn't far off. It was good enough for us to promise ourselves that if we ever find ourselves in Venice again, we wouldn't stay anywhere else!
The hotel is only about a fifteen minutes walk to Realto, so the location was fairly central. It is about a five minute's walk to the San Stae waterbus stop.
I really hope you can get a room here, I think you'll really enjoy it.

A double or single room? What time of year you will be traveling? (the one I suggested varies from 69 euro low to 239 euro high, changes by type of room and time of year).
There are convents and hostels both in Venice, hopefully someone will posts recommendations along these lines.

In response to Suze, my wife and I stayed at the Instituto Artigianelli, which I believe is most likey either a boys school or seminary (never found out which), but is frequently listed with convents. We thought the accomodations excellent, a good value, and the location perfect for walking. E-mail me if you want further info.

I was curious, I checked tripadvisor for comments on the Ca'Bonvicini. There are four as of now.
Mostly praise, including the roof top terrace, and good service. Criticisms of hard-to-find location (?)-sestiere is Santa Croce, and the breakfast. One reviewer didn't like the bathroom.
No elevator.
