Positano/Capri Itinerary Help

We just booked through Rentvillas a villa in Positano May 10-17th. They seem very good to work with.

We also want to spend some time on Capri, getting more than we would with a day-trip. Our plan is to spend 3 nights there - one of which would be the night we fly in so we would be zonked, then ferry over to Positano.

Does it make the most sense to start in Capri? My fear was that if the seas were rough, and we did Capri last, we might not get back to the mainland and could miss our flight.

We will have 2 full days in Capri. I don't think we will be bored, but I have not been there. Most places we love just to hang out and relax.

We also want to see Ravello, Amalfi, perhaps Sorrento (worth it?) and either Paestum or Pompei (which is better?). I'd also like to see Vietri if that is doable.

We are hiring a private driver through Rentvillas for the Naples airport to Sorrento trip then ferry to Capri, but what is the best way to get to the other towns we want to see? We love boats, and any place we can get that way would be great!

I'm hoping the time of year we go most things will be open and the boats running - and of course the weather fine!

Can't wait!

Your plan to start in Capri sounds good as it will give you a chance to rest up from your trip. Also, as you note, there is the chance of rough seas delaying your return. Two full days in Capri is fine. We were there for a week and could happily have stayed longer, and really never sat still for long. There's not much to see in Sorrento (where we've stayed twice) but there are lots of hotels and restaurants and shopping, if you feel the need to get to a larger town. Paestum and Pompeii are very different, not really comparable. Pompeii is the ruin of a Roman town; Paestum the well preserved ruins of several Greek temples. Pompeii is definitely closer and more extensive. The bus and ferry will take you to Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano and Naples. The Circumvesuviana train runs between Sorrento/Pompeii/Naples. The only way to get to Ravello is by bus or car.

There is a shuttle bus between the Naples airport and Sorrento for 6E per person although I'm not sure why you are going to Sorrento at all if your destination is Capri. Why go all the way to Sorrento when you could ferry from Naples?

The woman at Rentvillas told us to go from the airport to Sorrento - I guess they have more transportation choices to Capri from Sorrento (??)

Gabrielle - where did you stay on Capri? We are thinking of La Minerva. I am assuming we should book rather soon?

I would go directly from Naples to Capri, you can see Sorrento later in your stay.

Hi Wanderer - I'd second SeaUrchin's suggestion. There is a regular Airport Shuttle bus to the port area (-Molo Beverello).

For hydrofoil/ferry timetables to Capri see:

Hope this helps ...

We stayed at La Tosca, but La Minerva is definitely a nicer hotel. It never hurts to book as soon as possible. Especially if you are going first to Capri, I recommend going directly from the Naples airport to the Naples ferry. There are lots of ferries from Naples to Capri. We had made arrangements for a driver to pick us up from the airport and take us on a three hour tour of Naples before taking us to the ferry, so I can't comment on the bus (although it would certainly be cheaper).

By the way,

Don't forget to visit the Villa Jovis (the ruins are not impressive, but it's very quiet and the views are superb) and Monte Solaro (a world apart, specially the path leading to the Eremo di Cetrella).

Have a great trip!

Via Occhio Marino - is location of Minerva
Via Federico Serena - is location of Flora, the other hotel we are considering.

Perhaps someone can tell me which location is better.

There's not much on tripadvisor on Flora - anyone have first-hand knowledge?
