positano to rome via salerno

Hi
We are in Positano and it is so beautiful. Thursday we are leaving for Rome and I am not sure I gave us enough time to catch our train.
The first ferry to leave Positano for Salerno is at 10O and it takes 70 minutes. For those who have taken this ferry is it normally on time?
That would put us into Salerno at 11:10 and our train is booked for 11:42. How do you get from the ferry dock to the train station? We may be running.
Also we have electronic tickets for the train. Can I just board with our printed confirmation or do I need to check in somewhere first?
Lastly, if we do miss our train, will they let us take the next one or do we have to buy new tickets?
Thank you!

Hi J,

You will more than likely make your train.

It's about 10 min from the ferry dock to the train station.

> we have electronic tickets for the train. Can I just board with our printed confirmation or do I need to check in somewhere first?<

If you have ES* tickets, your prinout is all you need, because it is good only for that train.

For other trains, you need to get your paper tickets from the ticket machine or ticket agent at any train station in Rome.

>... if we do miss our train, will they let us take the next one or do we have to buy new tickets?<

If it is an ES* you will have to pay a small fee for another reservation. If not, your tickets are good for any Salerno/Rome train, but you will not be guaranteed a seat without paying for another reservation.

You could take the twice hourly buses at any hour so you wouldn't have such a tight connection - buses don't seem to serve the Salerno train station however.

I have traveled from Positano to Salerno train station on a bus, but with such a tight schedule I would take a taxi. If not I would take a very early bus, I wouldnt trust the ferry (weather, delays, running from the dock to the station with luggage [it is not THAT close]).

Hi SU,

According to www.mappy.com it is 0.2km and takes 5 min. My Lady wife and I did it in under 10, but we were sightseeing.

To get from Positano to Salerno by SITA bus, one changes at Amalfi. The bus stops at the train station in Salerno.

The ferry from Positano to Salerno was on time when we took it on May 20th - in fact, it actually left Positano about 2 minutes early!

Yes, Ira. You change buses in Amalfi.

I would not want to cut the time too close between the ferry and the train. It is not a far walk if you know where you are going, etc. One wrong turn and bye bye, ciao ciao treno.

And yes, like I said, the bus stops right in front of the train station.

I apologize for piggybacking onto this thread and my trip is not for awhile yet, but we plan to go from Salerno to Orvieto on a Sunday in the fall, leaving late morning or early afternoon, do y'all recommend advance reservations?

Given possible delays on ferries/busses in getting from Amalfi to Salerno, seems like it would be best to just get to the Salerno station and take the next train, but don't know how likely trains would be crowded/sold out on a Sunday.

Make a reservation for a few euros if you miss the train make another. But could be packed as many of these trains are coming from Sicily/southern Italy to northern Italy - lots of workers coming to and fro - some days can be packed.

Thanks to those who responded. We decided to risk it and made it to the platform with 10 minutes to spare - only to find out our train was delayed anyway!

Our hotel in Positano copied part of their Salerno map for us showing where the ferry comes in and where the train station is so it made it very easy to find.

Good for them! I was with a local and we walked around the area a bit and made a few wrong turns from the dock before we found the station. One detour was because a palm tree was on fire, it was just standing there alone on the street with the top in flames and no one even paid it any attention but I didn't want to walk underneath it, ha.

Hi Jesssica (and everyone),

My husband and I need to get from Positano to Rome as well - do you recommend this route? How long is the train ride from Salerno to Rome and how much does it cost? Lastly, where can I purchase tix online?

Thank you!

Teelin - The Salerno route is one of several options.

Positano-Salerno by ferry takes 65 mins and costs € 6.00

Salerno-Rome by train costs approx. € 22-25.00 (- depending on type of train) and takes 2.5 hrs +

For timetables see:

www.trenitalia.it

(You can buy online).

Alternatively a quicker route is to take the Positano-Naples hydrofoil (- dep. 12.15; € 9.00) - and continue by train to Rome from Naples.

A budget option is the Positano-Rome bus - though this takes about 4.5 - 5 hrs.

www.marozzivt.it

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Hi Steve,

Is that Marozzi bus from Positano or from Sorrento?

I would recommend the Salerno route, it worked out well for us. I have heard (as Steve mentioned) that catching the train in Naples is faster but I was a little worried about the Naples train station. I'm sure if you are cautious it is fine, like a lot of cities, but for me it was worth the extra time to avoid it. I don't know exactly but I don't think it is that much longer.

We purchased our tickets on trenitalia.com and chose the ticketless option so were able to go right to the platform and board with just our confirmation showing our PNR number. When they came through to check tickets the punched our code in and it printed out a receipt.

I hope you have a great time - we did!

Thank you all for the helpful advice - this is the last part of my planning, then I just count the days! (We leave on Sept. 4)
