My husband and I will be staying in Positano in late April for a week. We would like to do day trips to Amalfi, Ravello and Capri. What is the best way to get to these areas? We will not have a car.

IMO, the "best" way is by boat. You can also take the bus, but it gives me horrible motion sickness.

As long as the seas are calm enough it is easy to catch a boat from Positano to Amalfi. From Amalfi, you can bus or taxi up the hill to Ravello.

You will need to check out ferry times to Capri.

Two good ways that I know of:

a ferry (check times with your hotel perhaps? because they run less in the off-season). I used one to get to Capri from Positano.

You could hire a private driver. You can probably research private drivers on Fodors and again, ask your hotel. They are pretty common on the Amalfi coast road. I've heard terrible things about the bus (nausea.)

Thank you both for the information. We would like to take a ferry but we were unsure if they were running 'off season'. I truly have no interest in taking a bus along a winding road - I'm very sensitive to motion when taking curves in a vehicle. I do ok when I'm on the water!

Hi!In April hydrofoils from Positano aren't running. If you want visit the Amalfi coast booking a private driver is the best way to enjoy it. If you you want visit Capri you should arrange a transfer to Sorrento (40 minute by car) and taking there the hydrofoil. The crossing is short, 25 minutes only.

July seems kind of late in the season.

We have used a driver (booked through our hotel) and found that to be the best way to see the Coast. If the weather permits, them a ferry is fun, but as I understand it, Mother Nature still rules in the spring.

The ferry. We did all three of these last April. It is an easy and enjoyable ferry ride from the beach in Positano to Capri and Amalfi. From Amalfi we took the open air bus for the short ride up the mountain to Ravello. We bought the boat tickets without any problems from the ticket stands by the pier in Positano. It was not crowded but it was not the high season either. If you want to see the Blue Grotto in Capri, make sure it is open before you go. We went on a bright sunny day only to find that it was closed due to rough seas. Also, make sure it is not going to rain in Ravello before you buy tickets for the open air bus. (Sorry if that sounds too obvious)

Sorry maybe is just a misunderstanding.I was talking about ferries from Positano to Capri. They start running officialy from the end of May not July but timing and trips can vary according to the weather condition. Until July hydrofoils are not so reliable. Hope this information helps.
I will be in Amalfi the last week of April this year and from there I am going to Capri for a few day,
I checked the hotel in Amalfi as to when the ferry service from Amalfi to Capri will start. They responded that they contcted the ferry line and that this year they will start service March 27.
I also emailed my hotel in Capri and they suggested that I go to Sorrento and from there take the ferry.
Obviously the Amallfi to Capri is much better, good to know that Positano to Capri is an option. I know
I will be able to get to Capri.

One last thought if you are still following. I absolutely despise the hydrofoil. I would much rather be on a ferry boat. The hydrofoil, for me, is loud, smelly, and a bit sickening.

Let me clarify my comments above. We were there this past April, the week before Easter. We took the ferry to Amalfi twice, once to spend the day in Amalfi and once in route to Ravello. We also took the boat to Capri, but it may have been the hydrofoil as opposed to the ferry. The ferry may be a smoother ride than the hydrofoil, but we did not find the hydrofoil that bad at all.
