Positano-- Need some info please

My husband and I are planning on going to Positano for our 5th wedding anniversary next year. Our anniversary is at the end of March. Should we wait until April or May? Does anyone know about the weather in March - June? Also, I'll be flying to Italy from New York. Which airport to I fly into? How far is Positano? How would I get to Positano?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

March can be quite wet and cool. The weather is much better and warmer in May.

From New York, you can fly into Rome, then take the Eurostar to Naples.

Naples is about an hour and a half drive from Positano. You could either hire a private driver for the trip, or take the local train to Sorrento, then the bus to Positano. There is also, in season, ferry service from Sorrento to Positano.

Good luck with your plans!

jennymary,

I just returned last week from Positano. I would wait until end of May so that you have nice weather to pool or sea swim. When I was there it ranged from 85 - 90 degrees.

I also came from New York/Kennedy but we drove down from Rome. I'm not sure that you can fly direct into Naples, ask you carrier. If so, you can hire a dirver to take you (Naples to Positano) about 30 miles but it takes about 1 hour due to the small roads. Look at the posts from this morning, I posted my trip report, it has some items you may interested in from my 5 day stay in Positano.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
John

I just wanted to add that sometimes you can save a few hundred dollars ( and some time on the ground) if you are willing to fly JFK-London-Naples.

It would probably help you a lot to get a guidebook and do some basic research about where Positano is located, best time to visit, options for getting there etc.

March is not a good time on the coast, it is cool to cold and rainy. Many of the better restaurants are closed as are some hotels. The ferries are running on a limited schedule and if it is very rough, do not run out of Positano at all. May (the later in the month the better) and onwards are good up until early October.

If you are just going to the coast and don't want to see Rome or other parts of Italy, it makes much more sense to fly into Naples rather than Rome. Going to Rome means you would then have to transfer to a train or car (about 3-4 hours) Naples, which only adds time if you are first going to spend any time in Rome. Of course, you could get a connecting flight in Rome or Milan to Naples on the morning you arrive. This would be a good option. You should price some US-Naples flights connecting through Rome or Milan to see if using Naples as the final destination adds much to the price of a US-Rome ticket (it shouldn't add much and is worth saving the time and hassle of the train or driving.) Positano is about a one hour drive from Naples airport. There are bus and train options (consult the guidebook or this site) or you can hire a car and driver or a rental car.

That direct flight from London to Naples mentioned above sounds like a great idea. There are few, if any, direct flights from the US to Naples, you generally have to transfer in Rome or Milan. However, going through London might be a good option, as you have to change anyway and it may be cheaper. Just watch the arrival and departure airports for the flights from the US and on to Naples. If you arrive into Heathrow like most US flights, but need to get to another airport to get your Naples flight, you will spend more time and money trying to get to Gatwick Airport or Standsted Airport, so then this option would not make sense. Also you might price direct flights to London and then do the London-Naples portion yourself, as there are several discount carriers with very cheap (like $20) direct flights from London to Naples like Easyjet (http://www.easyjet.com). Easy Jet flies out of Gatwick, so again, make sure your US flight arrives into Gatwick and not Heathrow.

All-

Thanks so much for the great advice. I am definitely going to wait until next May... as opposed to March. Alitalia has flights from JFK to Naples that connect through Milan and Rome. I'm also going to price out flights through London. Again, thank you all!

Hi Jenny,

You might find that flying into LGW and then taking Easyjet to Naples the least expensive way.

From Naples airport you can take the bus to Sorrento (http://www.curreriviaggi.it/)
and then the SITA bus to Positano.

You can also hire a private car to take you to your hotel - about 90-100 E.
