Portugal/Spain trip ,two 22 yr. old girls, June 2015

I'm looking for ideas for itinerary of 11 days the first of June this year . Two 22 yr. olds who are somewhat familiar with European travel. ~Fly into Lisbon, visit a couple of days and go on to the Algarve( which city would be the best for about 3 days?). Would it be packing too much into the trip to try and go on to the south coast of Spain and then up to Madrid (Toledo ) to fly home to U.S.? They might have a car,, might not! (One girl is our granddaughter. My husband and I lived in Lisbon for two years in the mid 70's, with our 3 children,, one of which was her mother at age 11/12.). We are thrilled that she wants to see some of Portugal),,,and WE know there are loads of interesting and beautiful sites and cities that could easily fill up 11 days within Portugal. The "beach" is also toward their
priorities.:): What are the trains like now in Portugal?,,,,,I understand there is a good high speed train Lisbon to Faro?/
