Portsmouth day trip

Planning a day trip by train from London to Portsmouth in January. Interested in the Historic dockyard and Old Portsmouth. I know there is a train from Waterloo to The port area.

We don't feel we can do the whole dockyard and old town in a day. What are the not to be missed sites/museums?

By map it looks a distance from the dockyard to old town. Is there a bus? We will go to the Dockyard first. Should we return from the port area by train or central Portsmouth?

Open for lunch suggestions as well.

Thanks.

HMS Victory and the Mary Rose are not to be missed. I am married to a retired sub sailor so we went to see the sub musuem also. We bought a combine ticket and it included a harbor tour. I hated where we stayed there but there was a beautiful harbor and loved the shopping center which had a Wagamama. I love their food, yes I know it is a chain but very good. We never went into the old part of town. I think we could have taken a taxi but we never did. It was not walkable. We ran out of time and spent two days there.
We were going to do the train but a man we met on the ferry from France told us to take the bus back to London, quicker and cheaper and really enjoyed going through all the little villages.

I used to travel to Portsmouth for business and we enjoyed dining here:

Couple of pubs that we liked as well, good fish & chips, although the best was from a little shack near the Victory.

... I've never looked at their websites before and that is not how I remember them. I would have expected something a bit rougher. Maybe a recent corporate merger?

Definitely HMS Victory and Mary Rose as your first stops. I used to walk between there and Old Portsmouth, but I like to walk. Maybe 30 minutes casual pace as I recall. Or we'd jump in a taxi, fast and easy.

Once saw an astonishing starling murmuration on the street near the Ship Anson. Everyone, really everyone, on the street stopped still and watched for several minutes. It was surreal.

If you are visiting the Historic Dockyard, you need the final stop on the train form Waterloo - Portsmouth Harbour. The entrance to the Historic Dockyard with the various ships and naval museums is only a minute's walk from the station exit and is well sign-posted. The Historic Dockyard is THE visitor attraction in Portsmouth and takes several hours just to get round the key sights, at least a full day to do it justice.

Old Portsmouth (which is a relatively small area around the cathedral and old harbour walls) is also within easy walking distance of Portsmouth Harbour railway station - but in the opposite direction to the dockyard (you need to turn right on existing the station and following the road round an arc to the right for about 10 minutes, passing the Gunwharf Quays shopping complex on your right hand side). To be honest, there's not a massive amount to see in Old Portsmouth, a hour or two should suffice to walk down to the Still and West pub (mentioned above), see the harbour walls and the small fishing boat harbour. Bear in mind that many old historic buildings in Portsmouth were lost in WWII.

Besides the Dockyard I went to see the D-Day tapestry and museum, but I wouldn't say they were a must see, and I was in town for three nights because I wanted to visit the Roman villa at Fishbourne and Chichester cathedral.
