Poros (greek isle) - comments?

This island (nearly touching the Peloponesus coast) gets lukewarm/tepid writeups in both Fodors & Frommers Guidebooks.

Matt Barrett (http://www.greecetravel.com/) seems to love the place, though.

Am seeking other comments..is Poros worth a daytrip or overnight stay?

We went to Greece 2 years ago and took the day cruise from Athens that went to Poros, Hydra, and Aegina. We enjoyed seeing those islands so much that we took the same cruise a couple days later. I thought it was a charming island. There are a lot of steps to climb to get up to the top. We only had a couple hours there each time but it was picturesque and very nice. There were a lot of nice little gift shops there where I got quite a bit of the souvenirs that I took back to friends. I thought it was worth seeing.
Carol

Though it's almost 15 years since I did the same cruise as Carol, I remember Poros as reasonably flat compared with Hydra, which was the one with all the stairs. Poros had lots of shops along the waterfront but didn't have enough time to see anything else of it with the 1 day 3 islands cruise.

My wife and I spent a week of our honeymoon on Poros 10 years ago. Loved the place, we kicked back ate too much, dranks lots of retsina and played soccer with the local kids on the beach, I tried to teach them cricket with a tennis ball and a tree limb...we had fun. Do not expect tremendous nightlife...although the swedish backpackers we met up with knew how to enjoy themselves......usually meant drinking too much and taking their clothes off !! TRY the place!

I haven't been there since the summer of 1991, but I loved it! Hated Athens so headed out early for Poros where we planned to spend 5 days, but we enjoyed it so much we extended our stay. Accommodations were incredibly inexpensive and we rented a little studio villa high up on a steep hillside with an enormous balcony overlooking the ocean. We rented mopeds which were a lot of fun, and also took the ferry across the strait to the mainland one day and rode around the lemon groves and little towns. There was a little cinema on the island that showed American movies outdoors, with Greek subtitles. It was very entertaining to see familiar films with a Greek audience. We ate very well all week and never had a bad meal -- I recall swordfish souvlaki and stuffed tomatoes and all sorts of yummy stuff. Most of the other vacationers on the island were Greek, some British, few Americans. Everyone was very friendly. I purchased a very nice marble chessboard in one of the local shops, and there were some OK deals to be had on jewelry. There was a picturesque little monastery and one very "ruined" ruin which I believe was one of the myriad "Temple of Poseidon"s. The views from the top of the island were lovely. There was at least one decent beach. It's not a large place but we loved it for a week -- incredibly relaxing and laid-back.

Tom...We just returned from almost a month in Greece and I feel very guilty for not having posted here sooner, since this is where I got a lot of good info for our wonderful visit. We took the hydrofoil over two Poros and ended up spending 2 nights there just before Easter. Stayed at Hotel 7 Brothers which is all of about 150 yds away from where you get off the ferry. Nice clean room with a view of the harbor and the Peleponnese acros the water and they have a web site through which you can book your room. It's a pretty little island worth visiting for at least a night and longer if you like to walk/hike/moped, with plenty of great places to eat and opportunities to take many pictures. You can also press on to other nearby islands lite Hydra and Aegina. It costs about 1/2 the price of the hydrofoil ticket if you take the slower ferry back to Athens. Both are very comfortable ways to travel. Gotta run. Feel free to e-mail me and I'd be happy to give you some more info. We traveled from Athens to Arahova/Delphi and spend about 4 days up in the mountains during the Easter festivities and we loved it. Then a drive down to Galaxidi and a trip north along the coast for the Ferry across to Patras and then down to great hotels/rooms in Nafplio, Monemvasia and an overnight stop along the Lousios Gorge before moving north for anover night ferry to Corfu, where we spent our last week.
