Pompeii on the way to Amalfi

I am traveling with my teenage/adult children ages to Italy & Switzerland in late May/early June. I have the trip planned out fairly well, but I'm not sure how to handle one day when we will be traveling from Rome to the little town of Atrani which is 5 min. from the town of Amalfi. If we were to go straight there we would train from Rome to Salerno.

What I'm trying to figure out is if we could stop at Pompeii on the way. Would there be some way to store luggage while we toured the site? One other thing I thought of is to have a private driver/tour guide to take us from Rome to Pompeii and then catch a train after touring the site from Pompeii to Salerno. Hopefully we could store our luggage in his vehicle.

I've always wanted to see Pompeii and it seems natural to do it on the way to the Amalfi Coast. I would love to hear suggestions as I don't know what storage options there would be.

There is luggage storage at Pompeii. I think the best option is to take the train to Naples, then get a driver for the trip to Pompeii and on to Atrani.

A train from Pompeii to Salerno would require a backtrack to Naples. Pompeii is not on the train line, it's on the Circumvesuviana commuter line which runs from Naples Centrale train station to Sorrento.

Pomeii also has a Trenitalia station about a mile from the ruins (Scavi station) that may have trains to Salerno without backtracking thru Naples.

Trains from Pomeii's Trenitalia station to Salerno take 19 minutes and leave all the time - no need to go back thru Naples and I'd take the CircumVesuviana train from Naples main station right to the entrance of the ruins and save a whole lot of money - could not be simpler - not as quick but simple.

Pompeii takes time and a good deal of walking and would probably be badly shortchanged if done as a stop along the way from Rome to Amalfi. You also would be adding multiple transportation changes, with luggage, and have to take time off from the stop off for a lunch. Do it as a day trip, not a stop off on the way to your destination.

I suppose you know that many of the best pieces found at Pompei are exposed in the Museo Nazionale Archeologico at Naples. A visit of Pompei is not complete without the visit of this museum.
Therefore it might be a good idea to spend a whole day at Naples and Pompei (or Ercolano) and to sleep at Naples or in the Torre Annuziata-Pompei-Castellammare di Stabia area. This latter solution would enable you to deposit your luggage at the hotel before visiting Pompei and to stay there as long as you like (or to spend the whole day at Naples, to visit Pompei the following day and to continue to Atrani afterwards (may be by direct taxi organized by the hotel).
Naples has of course much more interesting things to visit than the mentioned museum.

Napoli Centrale railway station has a left luggage office.
There exist different reviews about the left luggage facilities at Pompei (entry of the site, NOT railway station). In no case it would be suitable to go with luggage from the entry of the site (close to the Circumvesuviana railway station) to the Trenitalia railway station (more than 1 mile away) where you could catch a train to Salerno (journey time 30 to 45 min), unless you find a taxi.
It would then be easier to proceed to Sorrento and from there by bus to Amalfi.
The easiest solution without taxi and without a night at Naples/Castellammare would be to deposit the luggage at Napoli Centrale, to backtrack from Pompei to Naples and to go from there to Salerno by fast train (35 min journey).
Train journey times:
Naples - Pompei: 35 min
Pompei - Sorrento: 30 min
about every 30 min, last departure from Naples 21.41

If you wan to avoid all this backtracking, organize a honest taxi driver for the Pompei - Atrani leg (20 miles on sinuous roads through the hills)

You're with luggage and kids. Forget the public transport.

Take the train to Napoli Centrale. The fast service takes 1 hour 10 minutes. Then arrange for a private car service to pick you up there, take you to Pompeii for a few hours and then on to Atrani.

Yes, it won't be cheap but it will save enormous hassles. There are many companies who will do this run for you and it will cost in the region of 120-150 euro. Get some quotes.

Just to correct some of the information above - there IS left luggage facilities at Pompeii Scavi train station. It is down the stairs at the underpass that leads to platform 1. No need to drag suitcases to the Pompeii site ticket office.

@kybourbon
I can categorically verity that there IS left luggage facilities at Pompeii Scavi. I saw it with my own eyes when I was there on October 14, 2013.
So what if it's not on the website? They probably haven't updated it.
I know what I saw.
You go down the stairs to the underpass. It's on the right hand side where the toilets are. And while you're there, use the toilets (50 cents) as the toilets up at the Pompeii ticket office ALWAYS have lines.

I'm an American living on the Amalfi coast, and I use public transportation all the time. So when I suggest you take a private driver, I speak from experience! This is one situation where you should spend the extra money to save yourself LOTS of wasted time and aggravation. Take the train from Rome to Naples, then have a driver pick you up there. The driver will stay with your car and baggage while you tour the ruins, and when you're ready, you can leave immediately. There are many reliable companies. If you need a recommendation you can email me privately and I will be happy to give you a couple choices.

You do NOT want to go to Salerno. Although it looks closer on the map, the road is very narrow and curvy making it a longer trip. Americans make this mistake all the time when they have rented a car...and live to regret it. Never never never try to go to Amalfi, Praiano, or Positano (and all places in between) via Salerno. Hope that helps. You're gonna love it here!

I thought in season there were hydrofoils from Salerno to the Amalfi towns - I cannot imagine a better way to reach an Amalfi base - by water.

PalenQ, you are correct that there is very good ferry service between Positano/Amalfi/Salerno from April through October. IMO it is the best way to travel between the towns. The views when arriving via water are just breathtaking!

In this case, however, I think it would be difficult to get from Rome to Pompeii, tour Pompeii, then get to Salerno via train in time to catch the last ferry to Amalfi, which usually departs around 3:30.

But if you don't have an intermediate stop like Pompeii, I nearly ALWAYS recommend direct train from Rome to Salerno, then ferry to Amalfi or Pos.

We were there last March and we did something similar, only in reverse (Sorrento to Rome with a stop in Pompeii). There were 6 of us so we actually had the private driver take us all the way from our hotel in Sorrento, with a stop in Pompeii to our apt in Rome - this was quite expensive, but with 6 of us were able to split it up. We used Gerry of Sorrento First Choice and were very happy with his services (also used him to take us on a tour of the Amalfi Coast one day). He did quote us 160 euros to take us from Naples (train station) to Pompeii and then on to Sorrento, so that should give you an idea of what it would cost. I have to agree with the others who said sometimes it's just worth it to pay a bit more and hire the private driver. I would recommend taking the train from Rome to Naples and then hiring the driver from there. Also, Jerry provided us with a great guide for our time in Pompeii, he was an additional fee. We found our Pompeii guide very enjoyable and informative, but up to you on what you would want to do.

Palen: I hope you don't mean Metro del Mare. AFAIK this ferry service didn't run last summer.

No Neck, the ferry service is not MdM - it is www.coopsantandrea.com. MdM has not run at all, or only for the month of July, for several years.
