Pompeii on the way to Amalfi

I am traveling with my teenage/adult children ages to Italy & Switzerland in late May/early June. I have the trip planned out fairly well, but I'm not sure how to handle one day when we will be traveling from Rome to the little town of Atrani which is 5 min. from the town of Amalfi. If we were to go straight there we would train from Rome to Salerno.

What I'm trying to figure out is if we could stop at Pompeii on the way. Would there be some way to store luggage while we toured the site? One other thing I thought of is to have a private driver/tour guide to take us from Rome to Pompeii and then catch a train after touring the site from Pompeii to Salerno. Hopefully we could store our luggage in his vehicle.

I've always wanted to see Pompeii and it seems natural to do it on the way to the Amalfi Coast. I would love to hear suggestions as I don't know what storage options there would be.
