Pompeii day trip costs

So I'm trying to find the most inexpensive yet convenient way to get to Pompeii for our day trip. I searched on this forum and found a bunch of useful info...thanks for that!! I'm thinking the train route will be the best bet for us. I couldn't find an approximate cost on the train route though. Anyone who's been there recently know? We don't want to do the organized tour thing as I have no interest in cameos or wood laminate. We just want to see Pompeii. We are also looking at the ease of the Enjoy Rome shuttle but am concerned that the 2.5 hours at the site won't be enought for us. I saw the mention of Marozzi Bus Service on one thread but can't find a website for them that's current. One I found says it's only running from June 1 - Sept 30. If that's the case that won't work for us as we are planning on going April 30th. Anyone have confirmation about the sates of the Marozzi service or a good website for them? As always, thanks for your help!!

With further searching I found Marozzi's website but sadly it is in Italian with no "English" links...my italian consists of hello, i don't understand and how are you at this point. If you do speak Italian and are interested int hem the site is:
http://www.marozzivt.it/marozzi.htm

The intro link is pretty cool just to watch though. Enjoyed that...

Allison - The Marozzi shuttle is the cheapest option at approx. €30 return (round-trip) - but only operates in summer.

The return trip by EUROSTAR train costs € 45;
by Intercity train costs € 33

Add to that approx €4 Naples-Pompei Scavi-Naples on the Circumvesuviana

Hope this helps ...

Yes, very much so Steve, Thanks! I was hoping you would answer since it was your message I found the Marozzi name in the first place.

Another dumb train question...do they run pretty late? If Pompeii closes at 7:30 and we actually make it that long, will we have trouble getting a train back to Rome after dinner somewhere?

Thanks again!!

Hi!

We just went to Pompeii from Rome about a month ago. Pompeii was absolutely wonderful and I highly recommend it to anyone...definitely exceeded our expectations!

First of all, you will want to take the train from Rome to Naples. The trains running from Rome to Naples and Naples to Rome are popular routes and therefore you shouldn't have any problems getting a train to/from either one as trains seem to leave on at least an hourly basis.

The Eurostar Italia will run about $29 each way plus I believe you have to pay a reservation fee. We took the EI and had to pay a reservation fee (8 EU per person) with our Eurail Selectpass. If you want to go cheaper, you can get on a InterCity train for about $22, but the EI is a lot nicer and more direct with a lot less stops and will cut at least an hour, if not more, off the length of the trip. I'd say its worth spending the extra money for, but that would depend on your budget.

The Circumvesuviana runs from Naples to Sorrento, stopping at Pompeii Scavi. The trains seem to run about hourly and it will take about 40 minutes to get from Naples to Pompeii. There are faster trains with less stops, but they aren't as frequent. When you get to the Naples train station, there is a small Tourist Information office as you are heading down to the Circumvesuviana train. You can pick up a map there that will list the time tables. The cost is about 4 EU per person.

Hope this helps some!

There are at least hourly trains from Roma to Napoli in the daytime. The fastest take just under two hours, but the stopping trains still take under three hours. To connect with the Circumvesuviana, make sure you get a train to Napoli Centrale or Piazza Garibaldi (the stations are adjacent, one above the other). The Circumvesuviana runs every half hour to Pompei Scavi which adjoins the ruins (www.vesuviana.it). The last sensible return train currently is the Eurostar leaving Napoli Piazza Garibaldi at 2122 and reaching Roma Termini at 2315.

I also wanted to say that we used Rail Europe to purchase our tickets and reservations. I've heard some people that say Rail Europe is a little more expensive than purchasing in Europe, and some say the opposite. I did it for the piece of mind of knowing that the tickets were taken care of when we got there.
