Pompeii and Amalfi in three days
i am a college student traveling from Rome on May 14th to Pompeii and Amalfi coast. We have three full days and leave by train for Florence on May 17th. It appears that we should take the train from Rome to Naples and then a train from Naples to Pompeii. To return to Florence it appears we should leave by train from Salerno.
Can you advise what would be the best itinerary and the best means for travel. Our goal is to see Pompeii, Capri, Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi. One night we wanted to stay in Capri and are looking for ideas where to stay the other two nights. Also, can you suggest the order of how I should spend my three days

You really only have two full days, the 14th and 17th are travel days.With that little amount of time I would stay in one location and take day trips.
You could stay in Naples and do all of that, or base yourself in Sorrento and do the same.
You can take a fast train from Naples to Florence, no need to go all the way to Salerno to take the train back past Naples and on to Florence.
Capri is pretty but not prettier than any of the other places you want to see and it is quite expensive and full of other tourists. I am sure it is lovely if you had a couple of nights to spend there and could see it in the evening or early morning when the day trippers aren't there, but you don't really have time for that.
Do you have a budget for hotels? We can help with that as well if we know your budget.
And yes, from Naples you take a short train trip on a commuter train called the Circumvesuviana. You can also take this same train from Sorrento to Pompeii. Most of the treasures from Pompeii are in the Archeological museum in Naples which is really worth a visit.
It is a beautiful part of Italy, so enjoy!

If you give us your arrival time from Rome and departure time to Florence we can help you a bit more with the order of your itinerary.
If you are not interested in Naples then I would go directly to Sorrento and stay there for the three nights doing day trips to the other places on your list. Depending on the time of your arrival from Rome you might be able to switch to the Circumvesuviana, go to Pompeii, leave your luggage in the left luggage there, tour around Pompeii and then continue on to Sorrento. From Sorrento you can day trip to Capri, Amalfi and Positano.
Sorrento is very pretty and makes a nice base in my opinion. Many people here prefer Positano which is pretty too but with your short time and list of places to see Sorrento is more convenient while still having stunning views etc.

Thank you raincitygirl for your helpful suggestions. I will be leaving Rome in the morning so I should have pretty close to three full days, and will be leaving for Florence on the fourth day, intending to arrive there by 4PM.
I am hopeful that we (myself and two friends) can find one to two star hotels or a hostel for less than 100 Euros per night. Is this realistic? Do you have any suggestions for lodging in Sorrento?
Based on your suggestion, it does seem to make more sense to simply day trip to Capri.

The fast train from Rome to Naples takes about 70 minutes (whether you use Trenitalia or Italo). In Naples, you go downstairs to catch the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento (about 75 minutes and 4€). Watch your belongings as it's a commuter train. If packed, there are areas without seats and you can stand there with your luggage.
Pompeii is halfway between Sorrento and Naples on the Circumvesuviana line.
I usually stay in the hills above Sorrento (many hotels out of town have free shuttles buses), but you might enjoy being more central. On a budget and central, I would try Sorrento Hotel Mignon and Ulissa Deluxe. Although Ulisse is a bit of a trek from the train station, some people have reported really cheap rates there.

If you don't mind being up in the hills (about 10 minute ride with great views) and using the shuttle, try Il Nido. The shuttle doesn't run mid-day for a few hours, but they are on the regular bus lines too. They have a nice included breakfast and coin operated laundry machines to use.

The Ulisses would be just off the map on the far left sort of between Corso Italia and Via San Nicola. In summer, they close off Corso Italia to traffic at night for pedestrians (lots of shops/restaurants).

mrt, I don't have any personal experience at that price point but there is a hostel called 7 Hostel that looks quite good. www.sevenhostel.com

You can read the Trip Advisor reviews about the hostel, it sounds not bad. A shared 6 bed female only room is 25.00 euro per person per night.
Alternatively you could use some hotel booking engines or Trip Advisor and put your price point in and see what comes up.

I have stayed at the Ulisee and like it a lot. It's about a 20 min walk from the train station, right on the edge of the old town (so 10 minutes max to shops and restaurants. They have triple rooms. http://www.ulissedeluxe.com/
I agree with the places you want to visit and the time you have available the only place that really makes sense is Sorrento, and for the same reason I'd stay in Sorrento itself and not 'nearby' as it will make day trips harder.

isabel, that looks good for them and I agree that it would be a bit more convenient.
mrt, you might want to check out rooms quite quickly as the Ulisse is not showing availability for your dates but does have a message saying to email them as there may be some space.
