I live in the US. I'm going on my first trip to Italy in a month. I went to Target to get an adaptor and they had all kinds of adaptors and converters. All I have to charge is an iPhone and iPad. What type of adaptor and/or converter do I need?

You don't need a converter,just an adaptor plug. Buy one labelled for Italy.

You only need an adapter.

For Italy, you get Euro plugs like these: (4.0mm pin diameter)

Converter would be quadruple negatives:
1. Not needed
2. More expensive
3. Bulkier
4. Likely to charge your devices slower with cheap implementations without full wave outputs.

Officemax had their “20% off if it fits in this paper bag” sale. We had priced adaptors and converters, so we knew this was a good price. I don’t know how many times I had explained the difference to Husband. **sigh** He’s a smart man...but if he’s not interested in a subject, I might as well be speaking gibberish. We got the adapter and converter pack. Now, if he really must have his electric razor in London and Paris, he can. Otherwise, just the little adaptors.

But here’s a question:

If you have just a little adaptor, can you plug that in, and then a (US) mini-multiplug into the adaptor, to charge more than one iPhone/ipad mini overnight?

I take the appropriate adapter and then one of those 3 outlet taps from CVS and plug it into the adapter. We can the recharge the ipad and camera while running my CPAP.

You can use a multi-plug.

adapter <-- multi-plug <-- chargers/applicances.

Highly polarized multi-plug may not fit in an adapter.
Since most of the items I carry are USB powered, I do this instead except for a camera which still uses its own charger.
