Millie...whenever I see a requst for a comfortable and well-located hotel in Rome, I go back to my favorite...Hotel Modigliani..for a young woman alone, perfect. It is located on a a quiet street near the Spanish Steps and Via Veneto. Also walking distance to Trevi, Barberini, Pantheon, Navona, etc.

It is owned by a delighful, artistic and professional couple, elevator, excellent buffet breakfasts, rooftop views of the city, and a little off-lobby sitting garden, aside from some Modigliani favorites hanging here and about.

A single should be within the price range required. Highly recommend. We and several of my family have also stayed there over the years. It would be where I would suggest my grandchildren to stay while visiting Rome.

Check out on Tripadvisor,Rick Steves,Frommers,Fodors and others the HOTEL ABERDEEN on Via Firenze near the metro stop Repubblicca.I have been going there for over 20 years and this small 3 star hotel is fabulous,inexpensive,clean and very safe and in a great location for taking the metro,walking for shopping or buses on via Nationale(sp?),etc.It has free internet,free breakfast and a front staff of 3 female cousins who will provide any info she would ever need for traveling around.
I work for the airlines and layover at another hotel in another area and I think that the Aberdeen is a gem for what you pay,the area and what you get-only wished that we could layover at this hotel.
She does know that alot of things will be closed in August and that the heat sometimes is very oppressive?

Its very convenient to the famous piazzas and is extremely charming. They have a nice breakfast room which is cave-like as well as pleasant staff. My only caveat is that its tricky to find!
I actually stayed there with my young adult daughter two years ago and we both loved the location as well as the hotel.
August is low season and I believe the rooms are well under $200.
It gets great reviews on trip adviser where you can read better descriptions than the one I provided!

Millie..be sure to click on offers on Modigliani web pages...seems like an August special for a double room (for single use) is just 100 euros
($130) with bkfst. and VAT.

Just one note - she should not assume hotels have AC unless it is specifically listed. Many hotels do not - esp at the lower end of the spectrum - and the temps are often in the upper 90s with high humidity.

Millie.....Modigliani has AC in every room. See web page. As NY Travler says above, August can be brutally sizzling...that's why we have never gone to any part of Southern Europe during mid-summer. Spring and fall are the best.

We've stayed twice at Hotel San Carlo and I would feel quite comfortable there by myself. It is located between Via del Corso and the Spanish Steps. It is very clean and safe and has someone at reception 24 hrs.
A friend of mine recommends Hotel Golden which is near the American Embassy.

It is a nice clean and modern hotel, just around the corner from the main station, HOHO bus stop. And has lots of lovely cafes right outside offering good value meals and atmosphere.
It is walking distance to so many things, I would stay there again.

Millie i just thought i would let you know make sure she has the lightest case(if she is taking a case) possible as it is hard work getting them on and off trains and keep an on on them. I live in Italy (Florence) a lot and it just makes it so much easier. The best ones that i have found are the samsonite . Don't forget to validate your train ticket before you get on the train.

Tell you daughter to be very aware of the rip-off stores along the Via Sistina (one street over from Hotel Modigliani and the street you walk on to get to the Spanish Steps), namely Blu Ice and the two pizza/gelato places that sell takeaway Coke and sandwiches. The people who work there don't give back the correct change.

At Blu Ice, they will give you the most expensive gelato cup, instead of one the cheaper options, saying that you "pointed to this one" (the LARGE) when you clearly pointed to the Medium or Small option.

Hi Pepper....I agree..be careful..but Blue Ice has the creamiest gelato in town, as long as you get what you ask for. The "large" is usually far more than you would want. I found that sedate and sanitary-looking Crispini near Trevi was a real ripoff in every sense.

Hotel Modigliani for SURE! LOVE that place. Never had a problem with being overcharged for gelato, but I speak Italian well enough not to get ripped off. If your daughter doesn't, tell her to be careful on the Via Sistina.
