Please recommend restaurant overlooking the Thames

I'm looking for a restaurant with a view of the Thames and good food as well for my husband's 38th birthday. Any suggestions are welcome. I want it to be a memorable day.

I believe the Savoy Grill restaurant overlooks the Thames; check the hotel's web site.

All of mpprh's are up river and not in London -- all are lovely BTW but just not in London. If you mean IN London - there are many.

Savoy Grill, People's Palace, Blue Print Cafe, OXO Tower (a brasserie and a restaurant), the Globe theatre's upstairs restaurant, and others.

What sort of budget are we talking about?

Depending on budget Pont de la Tour, Oxo tower restaurant or brasserie. There's also a well reviewed restaurant at Somerset house that overlooks the Thames but I can;t remember the name.
Hope that helps!

I don't remember the name, but there's a restaurant on the Thames where Clinton and Blair had lunch a few years ago. I'm sure that's a pretty good one.

The Bush and Bliar was at Pont de la Tour, which does serve good food, but don't overdress to go there, doing that is so naff. It is really a rather nice casual dining venue, reflected in the menu.

Richard Neat's brasserie at the OXO Tower serves food which is extremely steeply priced, and has not been subject to favourable criticisms.

The River Room at the Savoy is not as good as the Grill Room, but has the river view as requested.

If you could sacrifice the river view perhaps you could have an even more memorable meal.

I did mean restaurants in London. I didn't have a price range in mind but I don't suppose I want to pay more than $75 per person. We are a party of 3 with a 16yr. old. If you can recommend a web site to check for any of these restaurants that would be great! Thanks.

..not in London BUT if Windsor..a great restaurant with terrace overlooking the thames ..It is a house that was built and lived in by Christopher Wren...I cant remember the exact name..great food, great place, wonderful evening...it is located as you walk over the bridge from windsor toward Eton..it is on the left before you cross the bridge..so if your London trip includes Windsor this makes for a great day and evening..head and shoulders above the much more touristy places..if interested i can probably dig up the exact name.

travelbunny, We are going to Windsor for the day while we are in England so if you can find the name that would be great. This is our 3rd trip to England and we usually eat at Pret and the Hard Rock as my eating habits resemble a 10yr. old kids. I would like to make this a memorable trip for my husband's birthday. Thank you to all.

I wouldn't dismiss the Oxo tower. The Brasserie which isn't as luxurious as the restaurant isn't too expensive, it's the restaurant next door that is perhaps overpriced, but they do share the same view!
An American friend was in London while we were there over the holidays and suggested eating there. I was dubious because of the reviews and because I considered it rather touristy but we had a very nice meal scallops, steak, salmon with interesting appetizers and an excellent bottle of Australian wine from their small but selective wine list. They didn't rush us and beacuse we were catching up with a freind we were there for over 2 1/2 hours. The view, particularly at night when everything is lit up, is lovely and because the you are on the 8th floor you can see across to St Paul and the city skyline.

We really enjoyed the meal, the view the walk along the Thames past the National Theater afterwards. Given that you want to go with a 16 year old and your budget is $75pp, not alot in London, I think it's a good option.

I can personally recommend the Christopher Wren House and there is an even better one just across the bridge ..but that name escapes me right now!

Or try the River Cafe in London!

Thank you to all for the replies. Now the hard part is choosing. I will definitely go to the Christopher Wren as we will be in Windsor a few days before my husband's birthday.
We are going in March. I don't expect a lot of crowds but to be on the safe side I will make reservations.

Does anyone have an opinion on the Vertigo 42 restaurant?

is there anything at the Marriott County Hall? I'd think that something on that side would be very dramatic. I intend to check it out when I'm there, since I can't afford to stay in a room with a Thames view.

I love river views, but have yet to find an exciting venue within London, that isn't simply overpriced for the view, or just not very good. We did book at the River Room at the Savoy two years ago, but when we got there and saw a totally empty dining room, we were very turned off and cancelled.

OK, here's another idea completely. Take the train out to Richmond and then a short taxi ride (or even walk along the river) to Petersham, a lovely old hotel sitting above the banks of one of the prettiest parts of the Thames. Have a wonderful meal there -- it is superb and a special spot for locals celebrating special occassions. You might want to do it for lunch, depending on when you are going to enjoy the views. See: www.petershamhotel.co.uk and I think you'll see what I mean, but the site still can't do justice to the place. Give them a week or so advance notice, request a window table and you will be well rewarded.

Wish I could remember which London Fodorite recommended the Petersham to me. I'm eternally grateful.

We enjoyed our meal at the restaurant overlooking the Thames inside the Tate Modern. One long wall is all window overlooking the river. Basically located next to the new Globe Theater. This restaurant isn't what I'd call a dress up occasion place, but the food & wine was fine & it was much nicer than the usual "cafeteria" style places you so often find in museums or other like attractions. The view was sensational. Perhaps not for a real special "occasion" .... But, if you are in the neighborhood, and would like a river view, look it up.

Without question: Putney Bridge (that's the mame of the restaurant, next to Putney Bridge in South West London). Excellent cuisine, beautiful (modern) building. Request a round table next to the window. Will stretch your budget (more like 70GBP than 70USD), but worth it.

Check it out: http://www.putneybridgerestaurant.com/
