Here's what I'm looking for. A purse with shoulder strap that I can wear across the body and lay flat. Something large enough I can put a travel book in. Something that doesn't scream "travel purse". Something that is fairly light weight. Maybe even something a bit chic. Any ideas? annieladd

I hope someone has some good suggestions for you because I'm looking for the exact same thing (and have been unlucky in my search so far)!
Me too!!!
I have this one and it doubles as a fantastic carry on. It is great for day use when shopping and has zippered inside pockets. Also, the shoulder strap is adjustable.
http://www.aldoshoes.com/eng/storeSection/redirect.cfm?sectionID=b2c/style/productDetails.cfm&itemID=59575642
I have one by Hobo International - they have several that match your criteria. The one I like has a flat organizer with a pouch in the front. The pouch holds my camera, a small sunscreen container, lipstick and a few other small things. The flat part holds the rest. I've used on several trips and really like it.

How about this one:
http://tinyurl.com/g8tk3
I saw it last week and thought it looked promising for a future purchase.
Thanks for the links because I have been looking too!
Mountain Equipment Coop has a large range of packs, shoulder and computer bags that look more casual if that's what you want.
www.mec.ca
I absolutely love my collection of Hobo International Bags (different bags for different purposes). Often you can find them at TJMaxx (for a fraction of the prices elsewhere). With web searches, you can find all the different styles (some sites have better photos/views than others), then price shop.
My latest favorite is this one http://www.coloradobaggage.com/cbc/product.asp?s%5Fid=0&dept%5Fid=11227&pf%5Fid=PAOHIDKCJPHHLNCC&
This one has an inside section, with recessed zipper (for security) (also with inside zipper pocket) large enough small essentials and a paperback or tour guide. On one side is an outer pocket, with inside slip pockets (for cards, camera, pda, phone...) with double zipper pulls, which are fabulous for security. when pulled to one side or the other, even twist-tied together if you like. (Those thin black twist ties from the grocery store bakery are invisible.)
On the other side is an open (with hidden magnets) pocket, great for maps, notes, slim guides (such as a MapGuide), while out and about, or securing your passport and boarding pass at the airport.
This bag is made of gorgeous and durable microfiber. Though leather is dressier, it's not practical when it's raining... I love the wider (comfortable, even over your forearm for a long while...) shoulder strap, which is easily adjustable all along (for across the body, shoulder, or handbag that doesn't drab on the ground when your arm is relaxed), and the straps are attached to one side of the bag, so it lays flat nicely. It's not too big, not too small.
These might be a little too casual, but are cute http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/4496340/c/57591.html - Also probably more casual than what you're looking for, but timbuk2 bags are the BEST for travel! The metro is a perfect size for a digital camera and a travel guide.
DJK - I think your suggestion might be MY next travel purse purchase! thanks!
I bought one at Wilson's Leather a few years ago that is my absolute fave and has gotten raves from my travel friends.

It had everything you asked for, long strap across the body, there was a small snap pocket in front where I put my sunglasses and lip balm, it is kind of squared so my wallet AND my digital camera fit in the main area, then the back actually zipped open like a portfolio and that was where I kept my passport and two credit cards. On the back of that is a little zippered compartment where I store all my receipts. It is also nice leather so it could pretty much go anywhere. That said, don't know if Wilson's still has the bag but you could check it out.
Oh, best part? I got it on sale
I really like my Kipling (altho the color in this photo is not as attractive as mine, I actually have the hot pink - the 'new black').

http://www.luggageonline.com/product.cfm?product_ID=1793
Why?
1) Its 'crushable', so I pack it in my daypack for airplane flying so it doesn't get 'lost' while overnight.
2) Its lightweight so doesn't add bulk or weight
3) adjustable shoulder strap so I can wear messenger style
4) When spending the day with my SLR and lenses, I put entire padded camera bag into this purse. Admittedly, it doesn't hold much else, but I'm not carrying around an ugly camera bag advertising expensive equipment.
They are sold at luggage stores, so you can check them out before you buy and not pay shipping.
Oh, the angst over bags... good luck
I just bought one at Eddie Bauer, but they don't have it online to show. I also bought this one from Nine West:
http://www.ninewest.com/s?namespace=catalog&origin=viewall_category.jsp&event=p.shoe&pid=11290&cid=1005#
Nine West has several different styles and colors of messenger bags.
I also saw a cute one at Coach:
http://www.coach.com/aspx/content/product.aspx?product_no=8200&category_id=647
I am waiting to see what the one from Nine West looks like and will either use it or the one I got from Eddie Bauer.
Let us know what you end up buying.
Do you carry these bags while touring through a city? If so, aren't you afraid that someone will slash the strap and steal your stuff? I do need something for our trip in May, so let me know.
Hi Mari - the one I've been using is leather and has a thick strap so I haven't worried too much. When I'm in a crowd, I hold the strap with one hand. I also don't take it off during a meal, I just move it to the side so it isn't in my lap. Have a fun trip!
Mariamack---Magellan makes a leather bag with steel cable hidden in the strap so it can't be cut.
Personally, I prefer a small (6" X 7") leather bag which is both more comfortable and more attractive than a large bag. I wear it diagonally (across my body) and have never felt the least bit "at risk" in any city. It will not carry a book; I put my book, water bottle, map, etc. in a separate tote bag. Nothing that I would care to lose goes in there---but still I have never had a problem.
Take a look at the lesportsac line. The bags are very light weight AND washable, and they come in a variety of shapes and colors, some pretty florals. I have several, but the one I travel with has pouches on both sides (one for sunglasses, one for keys or a cell phone), two outsize and one inside zippered compartments, and a zipper around the bottom that allows you to expand the bag when you need more space. Very versatile!
I just bought this one. Very lightweight, and of course, black. Lots of pockets and zippers. LOVE it.
http://www.ebags.com/kipling/caronia_flapover_shoulder_bag/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=19147
This will work for most sightseeing. At night I will probably downsize to a smaller shoulder bag.
Thanks for the information!
I found this posting useful.
You can get a Prada messenger bag with a wide strap on ebay -- I use the smaller size but a larger one would accommodate a travel book. The length is adjustable, and I wear it crosswise as well.
Surfmom, I didn't realize until I checked back on this post that we have the same bag, different colors. You might have suggested this bag to me a while ago. Haven't used it yet, but will soon. It looks perfect for my needs.
The Kipling bags are very functional, but in Europe, they are carried mostly by kids and college students. The Hobo bag suggested by CLS2Paris looks like a more "adult" choice.
mariamack, I can't answer for anyone else, but I do use a purse in the city. However, I never keep valuables in it. I basically use it to hold a guidebook, maps, sunglasses, a small journal, maybe a compact umbrella, and things of that sort. My credit cards and most of my cash are always carried in a money belt that is concealed under my clothes if I'm in a larger city.
I use a basic black woven bag that is non-structured so I can throw it into my suitcase if I don't want to carry it home on the plane. This allows me to stuff it with the guidebooks and other things that may not always fit in a structured bag.
Tracy
I've used a Fossil handbag for every trip, and have been satisfied. However, we have an outlet store near us where we can pick them up at a very discounted rate.
If you go to www.fossil.com, select Women's Accessories, then Handbags (Medium), it looks like there are hundreds of styles on their web site. The handbags are sold under the name Relic.
I got a Daymaker 7-pocket organizer. You can find them at Bag-n-Baggage stores sometimes, or order directly from the guy who makes them at http://tinyurl.com/qmrhg
They aren't huge, but are big enough for a small guide book, and I love the two side pockets--one for an unbrella and one for cell phone or a bottle of water. PLus they have a steel able in the strap so it can't be cut and snatched.
LeSportSac. Lightweight, lots of pockets, variety of sizes, colors and patterns. They can be found occasionally at T.J. Maxx at a discount, but a web search will yield other sources.
Thanks everyone for all your ideas. Glad to see I'm not the only one looking for the "perfect" travel purse. Ann, I like the Prada ones the best on ebay. I've never bought anything on ebay though... any tips?
Thanks..this info is great
Upon recommendation of another Fodorite last fall, I bought this purse for my trip and was extremely happy with it - just the right size for a small wallet, map, travel guide, & digital camera, but it laid flat to the body and the cross-body strap was very comfortable.
http://www.fossil.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=11723&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=1033&iSubCat=1039&iProductID=11723&selectedcolor=1836
I'll stick with my Kipling bag. Maybe I will be mistaken for a college kid...
My wife says to tell you to look at the Ameribag... Metro... Rio.
She just ordered online and got one in black.

What a GREAT topic. I have been on a quest for the right travel purse for years.
On last years trip to Japan for two wks., I used a thin but large Coach purse w/long strap that was big enough to fit a full 8" x 11" sheet of paper flat (without folding) in the outside pocket. This was great, as I take travel notebooks w/me where I place pages i have printed from the internet re where we are going, hours, how to get there, etc., and I could just take those out of the notebook each day and put them in the outside pcket and never have to fish around for them. And if I wanted (althoguh I never did) a guidebook would have fit inside.
This time (another 2 wk trip to Japan coming up at end of this wk) i decided to try an Ameribag, the "healthy back bag". See it here, it is the metro collection New Yorker bag, which lays flat across the body w/a wide strap in front and arocss the shoulder and back:
http://www.ameribag.com/metrocollection.html#
But I tried it out on a trip to LA last week and found it cumbersome and heavier than I like and I don't like the built in card pockets, etc.
So I now have bought a Vera Bradley fabric bag (dark fabric design, w/lots of pockets). I like it because it is very lightweight and lays against the front of my body w/long (or short) adjustable strap, and the ockets arae great and lay flat against the inside and outside. I'll have to see how it works out.
I am not worried about someone cutting off my purse in Japan. In other places, I'd want a more secure strap I think.
Heavens, great minds think alike! Unfortunately, my non-belly baring clothes give it all away... I used my Kipling bag again today to chaperone a field trip for little ones... held my camera, tissues, emergency forms, etc.
Annieland, when buying on ebay, wait until less than 2 minutes left, put in your 'highest' bid, pick an odd amount (if it must go up by increments of $5, add $6.50 or something - sometimes that extra little makes you win), and hope
Heavens, great minds think alike
Unfortunately, the non-belly baring clothes give it away...
Annieladd, when buying on ebay, wait until the last few minutes and have a fast computer. Put in an 'odd' amount (ie. $6.50 if minimum increments are $5) - it might be enough to make you the high bidder.
I like the idea of bags with the steel reinforcement in the shoulder straps, but unfortunately even that wouldn't have helped me in Thailand. I had the perfect travel purse that I borrowed from my mom. It had 3 pockets inside with the center pocket zippered. It also had a small zippered pocket and one open pocket in each of the other two sections (on the inner walls) as well as a pocket on the outside where I could slip my notes of the sights for the day.
As I said, the steel reinforced straps wouldn't have helped me. I had my wallet in the center zippered section with just enough money for the day and kept more money in the small zippered pocket mentioned above. I thought my wallet would be pretty secured, but someone slashed the side of my purse with a razor blade in the Pratunam area. Either I was completely oblivious being jostled around in the crowd or they were very good and very lucky. They were able to slash through my purse, the lining and get to the middle section to take my wallet without my ever knowing.
Luckily, it was our last day, so it didn't ruin the rest of our trip. Also luckily, I had cleaned out my wallet beforehand so there wasn't very much of value except for a couple of credit cards, pictures, the wallet itself (which I still miss as it was a gift from my BF) and the money I had just put into the wallet for the day. Unfortunately, I had forgotten that I always keep $200 "emergency" money hidden in my wallet and didn't take that out, so they got a bit more money.
One thing I now always consider when looking for a travel bag/purse is the width of the strap.
I purchased and used a Hobo travel purse on my last European trip - it was absolutely perfect as far as size, number of pockets for organization, being lightweight, etc., etc. The one thing I didn't consider was the width of the strap, which was maybe about 3/4" wide.
I wore the purse across my body, and by the 4th day the area on my shoulder where the strap laid was very sore and tender.
I alternated shoulders throughout the rest of the trip, but even so the strap caused quite a bit of discomfort. I wasn't carrying a whole lot of stuff in my bag, either.
For my trip this coming June I ended up buying a small messenger style bag - the strap is a couple inches wide, plus it has a pad built into the shoulder area.
I would note that I, personally, carry my cash and cards in very deep front pockets of my slacks or skirt, never in my purse/tote.
I prefer a purse/tote just large enough for my essentials (notes, pen, maps, slim guidebook). Along with my PDA, camera and phone. A comfortable and secure strap is essential so as to be able to hang onto the bag and (hopefully) not be relieved of the entire bag anywhere. As someone mentioned above, the excess books, bottle of water, sweater, umbrella, are carried in a simple additional tote bag, if being dragged around that day.
My cash and cards, however, I always carry in a very deep front pocket of slacks or skirt (best are those with zippered security pockets, such as the fabulous microfiber slacks available at LLBean) or an inside zipper pocket of a jacket or raincoat (again, fabulous offerings at LLBean).
I never, ever, carry a "wallet" or use card slots in any bag for cards.
When venturing out for the evening, without deep pockets or a jacket, I may carry a card and some cash in the inside zipper pocket of a small purse. But, I'd be walking within blocks of the hotel or traveling by taxi rather than metro.
Try TravelSmith.com They have some nice bags in different styles. I decided to try one of their bags that converts from a small backpack to a shoulder bag this year for travel.
I have ordered a purse from Travelsmith with the steel strap, but didn't think about the adjustable, padded portion of the strap which is very obvious. I think it might be more obvious that I'm a tourist and wonder whether I should look for another bag. Any comments on the Travelsmith bags?
I agree with hazel1 about the Fossil bag. I used it after a recommendation on this forum and I loved it! Very lightweight, it has one large compartment which was perfect for my camcorder. There is another zippered pocket under the flap and a small one on top.

Everything is very secure, with the exception of the small top compartment. Just keep valuables in a money belt or otherwise inaccessible. The bag is sturdy enough that it would be difficult for anyone to cut the strap - although fortunately I did not have anyone try. I was pickpocketed, though!
i have the milano messenger bag.
Has anyone seen/bought the Magellan Leather Vertical Security Purse, size small ($59.00)? It looks nice and I like the steel cable. I wear my purse diagonally across my body and the photo on-line just shows a gal wearing it on her shoulder.
I've been checking out discount stores like TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Filenes for a travel purse myself as I'm kind of tired carrying around my backpack. Plus, while in Rome last year, even though I had one of those locks on my backpack connecting all the zippers together, the lock fell off in my hands (dang Made in China lock!). I will reconsider carrying a backpack for the time being.

Anyway, almost scored a win today. Unfortunately, for a second to tie my shoes, I put down this great Kipling bag with multiple zippers w/the monkey still attached, and someone ran over and took it, then RAN. If it's one of you, I'll forgive you. Otherwise, curses!!!
When I do find my success, I will let everyone here know all the details so we can share. Maybe it can even become a "secret handshake" kind of thing among the ladies
topping for Monica!
I use the classic hobo from Le Sportsac a lot http://www.lesportsac.com/store/7520_5205.html The strap can be shortened so it's a shoulder bag or lengthened so it can be worn across the body. It holds the guidebook, camera and my cash/credit cards easily.
However my last trip to Paris I just used my regular handbag. Took out all regular day to day junk and just kept the essentials. On long days, and especially at the flea markets (darn purse kept getting in the way!) I was wishing for that sportsac to sling across my body though! Le Sportsac bags are very lightweight and crushable for packing so, note to self, I'll just bring both next time.
I can definitely recommend one NOT to get. I purchased this one from a Samsonite store about a month ago.
The strap was so bad - it literally ate three of my shirts.
Size-wise it was fine. Held my camera, small wallet, change purse, Eyewitness Guide, pen, paper, etc - even a bottle of water for the DH.
Thank goodness it was just the two of us, though and I could just rinse a shirt out if necessary and re-wear it - if I had to go anywhere - I would have had to buy new shirts.

Just throwing out another option ...
http://www.sherpanipacks.com/
I have two (one sportier backpack-type and one "urban bag" in black). They're very lightweight and durable.
this has been very interesting, as I have been trying to streamline my purse selection for my upcoming trip. In the past I have always used the Overland "donner" bag. newest version at rei.com
http://tinyurl.com/5rw92
However, it is probably too casual for most people. I like it because I have been able to convince my partner that it's masculine enough for him to carry too so that we can take turns. We never carry anything of value in it, mostly just guide book, metro maps, sun lotion, spare change, etc. Also it has two side pockets for an umbrella (that has come in really handy on almost all of our trips) and we put a water bottle in the other.
as for my upcoming trip I may take my gucci bag that has a long strap (something like this http://tinyurl.com/rxukf ) is this smart? It fits the criteria for being something I can sling across me, and hold on to in the front, however, it's expensive, would it attract the attention of theives?
I was just going to take a small backpack. Do you think that is smart or will it scream, rob me?
Usually my husband keeps all the cash in his front pocket so the pack will be for water, books, umbrella etc
The REI Donner bag looks like a good travel bag. If you want something a bit dressier for evening you could pack a small leather or fabric bag. I have a small, black quilted Vera Bradley that is almost weightless. I put socks and small stuff in it for packing and then use it to carry my eye glasses, room key, tissues, etc. at night. I use a nylon bag with several pockets during the day and it works very well. I like the nylon (or other durable fabric) for travel for two reasons: it is lighter than leather and you can spot clean it. My bags seem to take a lot of abuse when I travel and I don't want to damage my good leather bags.
Yes, I do think a backpack is inviting to pickpockets, but if you have no money or anything of value in it, it might work for you. I've heard of thieves cutting into them though so there's a possibility of damage.
I recently purchased the CitySafe 100 on E-Bay after searching different websites. I haven't travelled with it yet, but I really like it. I've always just use my regular handbag, but will be using this one in Europe next month. This website has a good description of a few anti-theft choices that are attractive and lightweight.
http://tinyurl.com/p4wfg
nadoosh, a small daypack is perfect and convenient for maps, water, etc.. just don't put valuables in it, especially not in outer pockets.
hipvirgochick... It looks like a great carry-on for the plane, but it's awful big for an every-day-use pocketbook to haul around with you.
suze--the bag pictured on the page linked to by hipvirgochick is not the one she mentioned--here is the correct link:
http://www.pac-safe.com/skins/en/docs/citysafe%20100.pdf
Dear Hipvirgochick, what did you put on the 'search' on E-Bay for the CitySafe 100 bag?I tried several different searches, but they all came out a zero. Thanks!!
Ooops! Sorry suze. (Thanks for the correction g33krl). I would not want to be carrying that around all day!
It doesn't overwhelm with compartments, but has a couple zippered areas as well as a place for camera. I think a small water bottle will fit too.
g33krl is correct with the link to the purse I purchased. The link I posted has the one I bought, but some other choices as well.
Anyway, mine is 10" x 10" x 4" which I think is just about deep enough and not too wide or tall to seem obtrusive while day tripping
seeksocean - I could not find another purse on E-Bay. However, it was only a couple of dollars less than the website I found it on (see below).
http://tinyurl.com/fdrqr
Also, here's another link that has the same brand, but the "200" instead of "100". It's a little bigger with a detatchable water bottle holder if that suits you better.
http://tinyurl.com/fv5h8
Ah, that does make more sense

This is a wonderful thread! I love Le Sportsac for travel because they are lightweight and don't hurt my shoulder but the Hobo one suggested here looks wonderful, too.
A few years ago I had a Le Sportsac that the fabric pattern looked like a brown straw purse - unfortunately I lost it. I never see one like it on E-bay. I would love to have another - anyone seen one?
What do you think of the Vertical bag that Magellan's has, either in leather or Microfiber vs. the City safe 100? Thanks!!
seeksocean - I do like the purse on Magellan's (especially the fact it comes in leather). However, I wanted something deeper (4" vs 2") and the width of 10" vs. 8". 2" doesn't seem like a lot, but when I got my purse I realized it's as small as I'd want to go. If it's important to you for "safety" features, I don't believe the Magellan's purse has the anti-slash weave that the CitySafe has. For checking the size I suggest outlining the measurements on a piece of paper. I know this sounds silly, but it helps give you a better sense of what you'll be getting when ordering on line. Good luck!
Thanks for the info Ms. Virgochica!! I think the Magellans bag has the steel cable in the strap. I like the fact that it is leather as well. I still have a couple weeks before I go, so I'll keep on it.
I have a purse from 1154 Lill that I love to use when traveling - you can actually pick a style and design your own. Definitely doesn't look like a typical "tourist" handbag/daypack.
http://www.1154lill.com/home/
I ordered the Magellan leather vertical travel bag. It weighs 15 oz. and has the whole security thing, steel cable, etc. It was $72.00 including shipping and tax to CA. I'll post again here when I get it. It was the nicest looking bag for the money, I thought.
Kris, those purses look like an excellent choice. Which one did you choose for a travel purse?
don't discount finding a good leather Coach bag (one of the legacy style ones) on ebay. You can usually find one for under 100 bucks, they're leather, well made, and many of them have long straps that work well for wearing diagonally across your body.
I just ordered the Magellan's CitySafe Handbag (in cranberry). I've been looking for something like this! I like the fact that it has the steel cable in the straps. I should get this in the mail in about 10 days. Will report back how I like it. When I get to Florence next month, I'll shop for something similar in leather.

I would like a small purase for the evenings and the vertical purse seems nice. I usually wear a light jacket in the evenings and keep my camera in one pocket and my wallet in another pocket.
Monica
I'm seriously considering this bag, or something similar to it. http://tinyurl.com/nnkk6
I found a bag by David & Scotti similar to this, but tinier, and in leather and canvas. Too bad the leather parts were white as I really wanted a different color leather...I loved it otherwise.
Also, am I the only one who likes to see a bag in my hands before I get it online?
For what it's worth, I never carry a purse abroad unless I'm travelling on business. As a tourist, I take an ordinary bag with handles (plastic drugstore bag, small gift bag) and use it to carry my hairbrush, maps, book, Kleenex, etc. and a small amount of money in a change purse.
I've never had a thief take any interest in it -- in constrast to an extremely sturdy nylon daypack I had which I literally had to wrestle over with a thief one morning in Spain. I won, but he was pretty determined to take the whole thing from me.
If somebody takes my plastic bag, boo-hoo, but I can always buy another hairbrush and guidebook.
For those who like the Kipling line but want something more chic and something more likely to be carried by a European woman versus a 12 year old (I have nothing against Kipling and their products are fine, but in Europe, they're regarded more as a kids' brand), Manadarina Duck, an Italian company, has some nice options. They also make appealing luggage and their products are sold in several U.S. stores.
www.mandarinaduck.com
I've seen the Mandarina Duck line in Europe and the bags are colorful and attractive. Lancel and Longchamps have a similar line. I think any of the three would cost less in Europe than in the U.S. and would be a good purchase.
I was surprised at how many Kipling bags I saw in Italy. Carried not by kids, but definitely by younger women.
more good info...
BTilke, do you know if I can find Delvaux bags in Venice, Florence, or Rome? they are still on my mind...
Alas, they only have stores in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Japan.
www.delvaux.com
I carried one of the Coach bags in black leather for years. My latest purchase is "the ultimate bag" from Chelsey Henry.
Here's the site:
http://www.chelseyhenry.com/collection.html#start
I take it everywhere-Europe/stateside travel/business travel-there are lots of little bags inside--and the little bag inside is great for everyday. I don't go anywhere without it.
I just came back from Paris and carried an Ameribag Esopus from the Catskill Collection (www.ameribag.com). It is small, made of microfiber and has an adjustable strap. It easily fit my digital camera, cell phone, pillbox, coin purse and credit card case. It was cute and cost only $20.
Just received the leather vertical security bag from Magellans. It's wonderful!!! I really recommend it. I didn't know how it would be/look, but it's surprisingly light and stylish. With shipping it was $72.00.
I am sorry for not having read all of the other responses, but Kipling makes nice travel bag-purses. They are lightweight and they have many sizes. Personally - i chose a very bright (chartruse!) bag for a recent trip becuase I think bright colors are less likely to be snatched. They also have dark blue and black bags if you want to blend in more. I think a thick strap deters many snatchers too.
love my handbag/backpack in french leather that is perfect for travel and it quite chic to boot..perfect that the straps are crossed and no one can get in while in the backpack mode.
I am really happy with mine and I get alot of compliments on it.
I got it at:
binkhandbags.com
I am sure they still have it.
Ok everyone, I have found great suggestions, but has anyone used the CitySafe Handbag or the CitySafe Shoulder Bag from Magellan's. http://www.magellans.com/store/Wallets__Purses___Totes___DaypacksLB379?Args=# I'm looking into it because it has steel reinforcement on the sides. I'm leaning towards the smaller hand bag, but the shoulder bag is so much cuter. Please give me your suggestions, what one should I choose.
elsebet - Yes! I have the CitySafe 100 (handbag), which is the 10x10x4 on Magellan's. I did not purchase through them though. I love it! The other one is larger and has a wider strap. I prefer a thin strap when wearing across my body. Also, the size of the handbag is just right for what I want to carry. Map, camera, cell phone, water bottle if I want, wetnaps, lipstick, etc. money and passport.
Were you able to find a deal on ebay. I don't know if I want to pay that much for a purse, but if it is good quality, and holds everything I guess I don't mind. Do you think that the City Safe 200 is to big to carry around on a daily basis. I was thinking of all the things I could cram into it on the way back. I guess I'll have to draw it out lie someone suggested. I'm not good with measurments so is the city safe 200 14 inches wide, and 11 inches tall and it can expand in width up to 4.5 inches. Thanks for your help.
That was me who suggested drawing an out-line

Anway, I did get the purse on E-bay, but it was only about $5.00 less. I posted above with a couple of links that are a few $ less than Magellan's, not sure about shipping cost. I will say the quality is very good.
The size will be a personal preference for you. If you want to be able to pack more stuff in, then I'd go for the larger bag for sure (10" x 10" is not very big). No, I don't think the CS 200 is too big to carry around on a daily basis
Anyday now, I should be receiving the MetroSafe 200 bag I ordered from Magellans. It's more of a daybag look than a purse like the CitySafe, but I'll let you know what I think when I get it.
I got a great bag from Coach that is flat with an outside zip pocket and a few inside pockets. It has a long enough strap to wear across your body and I latch the hook on the shoulder strap to the zipper pull ring for extra security. It's in their pink Spring patchwork pattern so it doesn't look like a travel bag (to me, looking too touristy is a sign for pickpockets). Unfortunately, they don't have it on their web site - I got it in the NYC store on Madison and 57th.
Njnancy....is this the pattern you got? I love it!
http://auctions.overstock.com/sm-coach-spring-patchwork-tote-so-spring--pg-PRODDET_pi-22798933_ti-82087.html
A brightly colored Coach bag would probably give away the fact you are from America (i.e. tourist).

That said, a tourist usually isn't too hard to pick out in the crowd: looking lost, taking pictures, reading maps, etc.
I purchased a Perlina bag last year, similar to this one. It holds my cell phone, small camera, passports, etc....). When we go shopping, or for a picnic, or when we have extra gear/clothing, I'll carry along a tote for those items. But I always keep the purse on.

Elsabet;
I have similar ones in microfiber and leather. Microfiber I got from LLBean and leather from TravelSmith.
The one from Travelsmith has the cable inside the shoulder strap and the 2 open pockets fit a waterbottle and umbrella. I wear it across my body.
One outer side is a generous portfolio type with places for cc, coin, Id, passport, etc *It has a small loop enlosed to attach a mini wallet to it for further protection.
Inside I can fold my sweater into if I need. The outer sleeve pocket is great for book, and other stuff.
They're boringly black but work. I tend to use the microfiber in the US and the leather elsewhere.
I also take a very small evening bag.
Thank you for all of the input. I think I'll go with the City Safe 200, or something similar. I too will also get it in boring black, so I can make my boyfriend carry it
I love to travel, but sometimes there are just too many things to think about. Great thing I'm not going until June. Thank you for everything.
I'm telling you.....Look at the vertical security bag in leather from Magellans. It's made by a small company in Santa Barbara and has the steel cables in the strap, is light and attractive. I may use it year-round!!! I guess they make a microfiber one as well, but I like leather.
I like the bag seeksocean mentions (because it's leather), but it's just not deep enough for me. Plus, I figure if I'm going all out for anti-theft style I have to go for the slash resistant material too! (Not just in the strap, but the entire bag). Anway, there are lot's of good choices on this thread!
Well I personally don't like leather. I'm kind of a klutz, and would probably spill water on it or something and the I'd be SOL. Hey are these two bags the same this one is from corporate travel: http://www.corporatetravelsafety.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=157&osCsid=09e38d16f8f20f0a01f556910ed310e5 and this one is from Magellan's: http://www.magellans.com/store/Wallets__Purses___Totes___DaypacksLB399?Args=# They both look the same to me with the exception that the Corporate Travel Website shows pictures of the inside of the purse. By the way what do you guys think of the Travel Safe 100 to use in the Hotel room http://www.corporatetravelsafety.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=46&products_id=38 or am I just getting too obsesive. I must make a decision soon so I can try it out before my trip. Thanks for all of your help also. I was wondering if the woman that originally posted found her perfect travel purse. I guess I'm too nosy
Thanks.
Elsabet...I'm considering that TravelSafe 100 for my daughter to use in her dorm in Italy. I've seen it in a local luggage store; you might try to find it to see if you like it.
Maire do you know if it could be found in any travel store, because I would like to look at it before I purchase it, if not I will just have to hope for the best.
Elsabet--
I found it at a store called Active Endeavors. However, if you click the following link to PacSafe, you can use "Find a Store" to help you locate a retailer near you. If that doesn't work, call the number on that website--that's how I found a retailer near me.
http://www.pac-safe.com/product.aspx?pId=646
I lock things in my suitcase in the hotel room (like a second credit card and my safety cash stash). Sure I guess someone could steal the whole thing, but seems kind of unlikely.
I never want to be the one to advise against safety measures, in case I am wrong, but chaining stuff to the dresser does seem like overkill in a hotel room. Maybe in a dorm or youth hostel it would be different. I know some kids chain their backpack to the bedpost there.

Here’s my report on the MetroSafe 200 bag I just received:
• Looks better on the man in the picture than on me, but I’ll live.
• Not real chic, looks sort of like a camera bag, but it’s not huge, and
• will hold all I need: guidebook pages, maps, phrase book, thin jacket or sweater, Kleenex, meds, cosmetics, camera, phone, wallet, glasses, sunglasses, etc. PLUS . . .
As they advertise, it’s very secure:
• Underneath the front flap that velcroes down, there are 2 compartments—one that zips, and one that doesn’t, but they are both protected when the zippers are locked. The non-zipped pocket can hold a guidebook or maps, etc. The zippered compartment has 2 pockets that could hold a wallet, glasses, etc. plus 2 pockets for phone, camera, and a pen pocket.
• Then there is a large, main compartment, also with a locking zipper. For an idea of the size of this compartment, it holds 2 large Fodor’s guidebooks (not that I plan to carry 2 guidebooks around!), plus a wallet and other things. There is an inside pocket and a detachable key-ring.
• On the back, there is another zippered pocket that would be great for a stash of $$ or documents. (This zipper does not lock, but you could lock it by clipping it to the side water-bottle zipper.)
• Externally, there are 2 zip-away pockets for water bottles, umbrella, whatever.
• The shoulder strap is adjustable, and they say the strap and front and bottom are all slash-proof.
One final, big advantage: I won’t be able to spend as much money, because not only is it harder for pick-pockets to get to, but harder for me also.
Much as I have enjoyed "window shopping" this thread, gotta agree with nessondorma, no purse is probably the way to go. Money, credit cards and passport in a body belt and something cheap to carry guidebook, notebook, sunglasses, etc.
Now, I am going to be the FIRST to admit on this thread to buying those airport bargain purses.
Talk about advertising that you're a tourist! You know the ones--always on sale. Once they were jungle patterns, then tropical flowers, then logos, etc. NOT sturdy,NOT fashionable, but definitely in my price range and who cares if it gets lost!
Now come one, folks, I know they sell a lot of those. Won't somebody else fess up?
Vera
I just went to the Delvaux site- how cute! By luck of the draw I will be in Belgium this summer. Anyone know how much those purses cost on average?
I have been guilty of that and then I realized how ridiculous I looked with patterns clashing and bright colors. That is why I have decided to stick with the boring, but always stylish...Black.
From several hundred euro to several thousand. Most of the mid-size models are in the 700 to 1100 euro range.
However, you can find an excellent selection of second-hand Delvaux bags in near pristine condition at the Il Secondo shop in Bruges, around the corner from the Crowne Plaza hotel. The shop specializes in late model, authenic, very slightly used Delvaux and Louis Vuitton bags. Many of the bags are in models still available new in Delvaux and LV stores. You can save hundreds of $$ at Il Secondo and still have the "real thing" (absolutely NO fakes are sold there--they stand by every bag they sell, the ladies there KNOW those brands inside and out) in about the same condition as if you'd bought a brand new bag and carried it gently for a week or two.
FYI, if you are looking for a particular Delvaux or LV model, you could call them at +32 (0) 50 33 07 88 and see if they have it. Or ask them to let you know if they acquire one before your visit.
Thanks, BTilke! I will definitely hit the second hand shop. No one here that I know of has those bags- so if I get a "last-season's" model- who cares? I'll have to check out those Louis V.'s as well! I already told my husband that's the one "must-do" on our list!
Just reporting in: I found my travel bag. It's a French brand by the name Sequoia and was $40. Very lightweight (think Le Sportsac w/o the designs), I can wear it across my body, and it lays flat. It will fit everything.
It's a large light green bag with an adjustable nylon strap - a nice spring color. And I couldn't resist, and got a deep purple w/pink stripe one as well, but the shoulder strap wasn't adjustable.
I tried to find a site featuring these bags, but alas, all I found right now are ebay sites, and none of them with my bag in it.
I got my Magellan's CitySafe Handbag and really like it! It could be a little larger, but that's fine. It will prevent me from carrying too much stuff. I like the features of this purse, including the tamperproof zipper. There's a pocket that looks like it's for a cell phone, but my digital camera fits there nicely. The only negative thing are the two small outside pockets. Not enough room for anything except for a pen or two and maybe a pair of glasses.

Monica
Monica,
I'm thinking about exchanging the MetroSafe 200 bag I got for the CitySafe handbag or CitySafe shoulder bag.
I guess you got the handbag, not the shoulder bag, right? (The shoulder bag holds a water bottle on the outside, I think.)
What is the fabric like? The fabric says "600-denier nylon" for all 3 of those bags, but, the one I got looks like a heavy, canvasy fabric--which I don't really like.
Also, is the shoulder strap adjustable?
Thanks.
I am a big fan of the Norm Thompson Save Your Back Bag.
It converts to a backpack. I can get a water bottle, in the little pouch on the back, tour book and digital SLR inside along with other junke and it doesn't seem to kill me with the weight...
Sad news: I'm returning the purple and orange striped bag (it looked pink at one point). While the bag is very functional, the color is all off for me. Thus, the bag goes back from whence it came. Century 21 in NYC.

Now, if I was a teeny bopper, it would be a whole different story!
One year older today...
Mcnyc --

Sorry it didn't work out; don't think mine is either.
Is it your birthday? If so, Happy Birthday!!!!
Yes it is!
Thank you Maire. And to return a purchase on such a day...*gasp*! At least the light green one is still a go.
Sorry yours didn't work out either. I have so many black bags that I always look for differently colored bags. The reason I brought home the purple bag was because it held water bottles! And all the pockets were so generous (read: fits more stuff).
I guess I'll look at more bags as a backup bag...I have an unwieldly obsession for bags!
Maire - I have the CitySafe 100 and you're correct. It kind of looks like a heavy canvas, but with a nylon blend sheen more than cotton canvas look. IMO much better than micro-fiber, but everyone has their own taste
It is also very understated in that it is small, streamlined and does not jump out at you as a travel purse. We're all so silly aren't we? I hope this thread is helping people!
mycnc - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I don't have a travel purse and travel extensively. I have a good quality leather bag with a shoulder strap and zipper. I do carry a cloth bag that I use as a carry on and doubles as an extra bag for picnics or long day trip. I have never found the need for anything else.
Hipvirgochick - my MetroSafe 200 is very dull fabric--no sheen. Looks like a camera bag to me. Does your CitySafe 100 have a zipper pocket inside? It doesn't hold a water bottle on the outside, does it? Thanks.
maire - Ok, I checked and your description is better. You're right it's not really a sheen, but you can tell it's more nylon than cotton (more like a camera bag like you said). It's more of a casual look. But, it's small so it's ok.
There is no water bottle holder and no zipper pockets on the outside. There are two zipper pouches on the inside of each side, and a little pocket with a velcro strip and credit card slots and a main compartment. Sound a lot more basic than the 200. I would not count on this purse to hold a ton of stuff, after all, it is only 10" x 10" x 4". I don't want to take a large bag this time because I tend to load it up and I want to travel light
Thanks for checking that and giving me the details, Chick.

I thought the MS200 would be great for me, but I'm not crazy about the flap; think I'd rather have a "purse" style. I do like the outside water bottle pockets though. It's 11x11x4, I think, and will hold everything I need. I know what you mean, the bigger it is, the more I'll put in it.
I just went and looked at mine again...ok, it sort of has a subtle sheen, but the style still looks like a camera bag.
Decisions, decisions.
Underhill, thanks, I tried out the black Lesportsac on a trip to Charlotte this weekend, and it worked like a charm. I did take another nice bag to wear when we went out at night.
I'm also looking at a Coach bag that you can wear around your shoulders or waist. I may get it as well.

Check out the great selection of travel bags at www.ebags.com, especially the smart Baggallini line.
Back from my travels and I have to say that the security travel purse I got from Magellan's was the best freakin thing I had there. Seriously, it was so great. I got it in leather, it had the cable in the strap, so it couldn't get cut off me, it truly helped me feel secure with all it's clever zippered stashes, and to not have to worry about my purse was wonderful.
I decided to keep using it after the trip and to even buy one more, in case the company in Santa Barbara that makes it, quits making it.
I never rave about stuff like this, but I am this time.
Magellan's and Travel Smith offer a lot of options. Take a look and see what suits you.
Ignore pitched battles over who is "right" on fodors.
I haven't seen anyone mention Tumi bags. Their Vista Flap bag is perfect for travel. You can wear it across the body and it's the perfect size. They're really attractive also.
I bought the Magellan's bag in microfiber a few years ago when I went to China. I loved it and used it nonstop until it finally started to fall apart. Then this past Christmas, I asked my sister-in-law to get me a new one and I use it all the time.
Just returned from my trip to the Baltics, and sad to say, my light green Sequoia bag that was serving it's debut as my travel bag gave out at the very end of the trip. The strap broke as I stood up from my airplane seat at JFK.

I ended up carrying the bag like a big makeup bag so as not to put additional strain on the one thread that was connecting the strap to the bag.
Today, it was sewn up by my mother (Dr. Mom), who gave it neat stitches and made it almost as good as new (there were many hidden stitches originally). It will now serve as my daily bag.
This means I'm back to search for a new travel bag. This means more shopping
I did find a cute new leather carry on for my overnight trips.
Hi Marie,

I just decided to see who’s been buying what when I read your message to me.
Yes, I got the handbag, which is a little smaller than the shoulder bag. The strap is adjustable and had a locking mechanism, which I really liked. I didn’t think it had a “canvasy” look to it. It was more like nylon. Lightweight too. It was a perfect size for me and most times I did wear it diagonally across my chest. I also liked the fact that the straps have a metal wiring inside so there’s no possible cutting of the straps.
Monica
Geez... I was just about to post this same question and then I came across this thread! Terrific. EBags has 20% off of most bags today (Sunday) till 6:00 so get shopping! i've already put the Bagallini Tote in the shopping cart, but now need to concentrate on a day time bag.
Has anybody tried the Tumi flap body bag?
adqdeb- yes, see current thread titled "better than a money belt (in my humble opinion)"
Thanks Monica. I ended up exchanging the first bag I got for the CitySafe handbag. I like it--and the features you mention, too--but wish it was just a little larger.
Hope you had a great trip!
Thanks, I had a fabulous time! My journal: http://www.luvtotravel.homestead.com/ItalyJrnl06.html

Monica
abqdeb -- check out LeSportsac. I recently use a plain black one on a three week trip; it was perfect for carrying daily essentials.
annie,
this is a wonderful thread. I have just spent an hour going over it and shopping !!!
monicapileggi,
I love your Italy travel photos. The food ones are great ...
Thanks europa! I enjoyed taking the food photos. I normally don't do that on my trips...well, maybe a couple of photos... but this trip I went overboard. So glad because I can save them as my background on my computer and drool!

Monica
Thanks Europa! I've gotten such a kick out of the interest in my little post. And, I've bought a couple of bags recommended! annieladd
I got this bag for our trip (we leave in 4 days!) and I've been using it everyday since I found it.
There are 2 well padded sections, perfect size for my camera and sunglasses, plenty of inside zippers and 3 separate compartments. The strap is long enough to go across the body or easily shortened to any length.
(it looks better in person)

Sorry, it's been a while since I've been here. I'm back to report that my cute light green bag from Sequoia, which is akin to Le SportSac, needs to be officially retired after 6 weeks of use. The beginning of the end started when the strap came off the bag at literally the end of our trip (on our way home from the airport). The last straw came yesterday, when, as I reached for my zipper to unzip the bag, the zipper handle came off in my hands. I left it zipped until I returned home, and have been convinced to finally throw it out. Ammortized over its useful life, the bag cost me about $6.70 per week.
Off to find a new bag. More suggestions anyone? I'm going to kick myself for not getting a Mandarina Duck bag during my vacation...
Will post trip report soon! Promise (it's half done!)!
http://shop.mandarinaduck.com/jsp/home.jsp?nocash=1154232163832
Thanks tondalaya, but unfortunately, I live in the US, and we cannot order from the website.
Which means I need to travel to Europe again soon!
"I'm back to report that my cute light green bag from Sequoia, which is akin to Le SportSac ..."
That was not a good experience, but at least it was at the end of the trip.
I'm not familiar with Sequoia, but how is it akin to Le SportSac? I have several Le SportSac bags in various sizes, which have been all over Europe and I've never had a problem with straps or zippers, even when they've been stuffed. I just looked at one beside me (18" carryon) that I've started packing for my next trip and both the shoulder straps and handles are so well stiched that I think it would have to be cut to come apart. it also has YKK zippers.
Last month when I visited in NYC, I bought the LeSportsac Deluxe Everyday Bag in the following pattern:
http://www.lesportsac.com/store/7507_3640.html
I love this bag. It is roomy, durable, has an adjustable shoulder strap and is fashionable. I've been using it around town and cannot wait to take it to Europe next month.
Pavfec,
You'll love that bag. I have the same style in a leopard print and one in a shiny beige fabric. I've used both in Europe and they were great. Lightweight, sturdy, can wear bandolier style, lots of pockets, washable. I also have two of the extra large weekenders, which have the same features but also lockable zippers. I use my backpack for my swim stuff and books and it's great too, but I'd like it better if it had a water bottle holder.
If you love your new purse (I'm amazed at the all the prints available) keep your eyes peeled at TJ Maxx or Marshalls for great bargains in a variety of styles (discontinued prints). I also like the small zip bags that are included with the product. I use mine for medications and cosmetics.
One of my favorite subjects! Here is my favorite. The stingray skin looks like a beaded bag. http://www.sealeathers.com/collection.cfm?attributes.collectionid=1
annieladd, I just bought a second prada messenger bag on eBay -- the first one has been good for travgel but a bit small--ther one I just got is about 9 x 10, with a wide shoulder strap and reinforced corders, at a reasonable price. I used the "buy it now" function on this purchase, because the price was reasonable, but I've previously used AuctionSniper to bid successfully.
I like this size of bag (and the style) for citiy touring; that way I don't have to carry a second tote, at least for cities and for short day trips.
I like the lightweight microfiber bags because they are so lightweight; I'm usually a great fan of Coach but for travel I don't like the added weight.
I've used LeSportSac too and have several sizes (all in black but for one grey carry on).
I'm reopening this post with hopes that someone can help me decide between the City Safe 200 and the 100 shoulder purse by Pac Safe. I have the 200, but it looks so big...would I be happier with the 100? If I carry too much stuff, it tends to hurt my shoulder, so maybe the 100 would be the better choice, as I wouldn't be able to overload it. Please advise.
I picked up a great messenger bag at Eddie Bauer that I use when I'm traveling as my only purse. They come in a variety of clors, have a number of compartments and pockets, and will hold travel guides and almost anything else you need. They are nylon and very light weight.
Welig, I have pretty much the same question. I'm going to be in Rome and am concerned about safety. Will use money belt for the important stuff. But I'm about to get a new digital camera and not sure what to carry it in. The 100 seems a little small to me, but the 200 seems kind of large. I may end up getting the 100 and supplement it with those pop up tote bags as needed.
Hi Tamtravels:
It seems like I shouldn't be sweating over this, but it is a concern. I do like the security aspect of these bags as well.
I am now thinking of keeping the 200 and supplementing with a smaller bag.
What kind of security belt did you go with? I found one made by Eagle Creek..nice and lite, but I am concerned that the clip won't last. I also purchased an ID and Boarding Pass Holder which I am going to return, it already ripped. The workmanship of some of these products is amazing.
I have both the Citysafe 100 and 200. The larger one is not heavy, and if you want to carry a guide book, camera, water, or pick up souvenirs, you probably would be happier with it. The 100 is quite a bit smaller and if you're a water and camera carrier, it's not very effective, but fine if you don't need to carry a lot. Also, I have a compact digital camera with zoom lense and it't not really deep enough. However, I do like the small factor in that it just kind of sits on your hip and looks more understated I think.
I ordered both the Pacsafe 100 and 200 but will have to return both. One is too big, the other way too small. Also, the taupe color is not deep and rich as shown on the computer screen, but more of a washed-out stony beige.
Instead, I got a Kipling shoulder bag (their "Vintage" collection, style "Newguard," color "fox")-- light weight, good size, and lots of zippered conpartments. A little more casual than I wanted, but couldn't find anything else suitable.
I just bought the Overland Equipment Donner bag at REI for our upcoming trip. I actually like the looks of it.
I used a nice leather bag on other trips, but it sat in a puddle of water at a ballgame, so is ruined. I have been looking for a replacement of that, but so far no luck.
Does anyone have any experience with the Sling Safe 200..a different look..11X11.75X1. It's not very deep, but just for carrying a few things, when not using the City Safe 200.
I just love this Tumi "purse".....
http://www.tumi.com/tumi_collections/flow/category_search/zip_pouch/product_detail/index.cfm?fuseaction=image&ModelID=41712&bb_id=&Sku=41712&view=Axlrg&sub_site_ID=0&TMI_PD_Link=DetailShot
I saw that one in person, and wasn't that fond of it in the end. Maybe it was the color I got (a dirty blue)?
Got myself a Kipling instead. Wish me luck this won't go the way of the crapper like my previous one...
I fly to Rome and Paris every month and I use nothing but a Longchamps purse. I take the longer strap midsize and its great for holding everything from a book to your jacket and umbrella. Most of my flying friends do the same-besides it is quite light weight!
Duty free,
How large is your Longchamps that it can hold a jacket? If it's lightweight, I assume it's not leather. Is it one of the pliages -- the folding type?
I own several but its the Longchamps that is the middle size with the long handles. The bigger one with the small handles is my "European grocery shopping bag"!All of my Longchamps fold up-thats why I love them as you can take several in different colors on vacation without taking up space.
In addition to the Citysafe bags, I'm also looking at the Metrosafe 100 & 200. But again, the 200 looks a little large. I can't seem to find one in the stores to actually look at without having to order.
I have a basic money belt for passport, money, etc. Since I'll be in the city, I'd just like to feel secure without worrying over it either. This is all new for me, I've never worn a money belt before.
Has anyone used those boarding, ticket, DL holders? I've seen them in the stores and wondered if they'd be useful.
What type of Longchamp purse are we talking about..can you please tell me which one from the website..is it the taupe crossover one?
I'm with you, I would like to physically see the City Safe and Metro Safe bags before ordering. There is a website for the distributor.. www.pacsafe.com You can enter your location and it will tell you the nearest retail store.
The Metro Safe bags kind of remind me of a camera bag. There is another bag that looks interesting, I think it may be made by Day Makers...it's a Vertical Security Bag that comes in leather or microfiber...you can find it on the Magellan website #LB116...www.magellan.com.
Hi, it's me again..the magellan website is www.magellans.com and the product number of the vertical bag is LB116..type it in under search. Let me know what you think.
Skydog-I have never been on the website so don't know which Longchamp you are talking about. I buy all my Longchamps in Paris at various places but they are microfiber with leather straps and range in price from about 65 to 72 euros.Seriously, I think that they are the greatest lightweight purse around!
Dear DutyFree and Skydog:
I think the LongChamp bags are good looking bags..with a long strap which could be worn across the body.
I am actually looking for the security type bags that have the wire reinforced strap, such as the Citysafe, Metrosafe, etc. They are definitely not as attractive as the LongChamp, but may offer the security factor that I'm thinking I need.
While in Paris, I'm going to check out the LongChamps for a nice dressy bag. Thanks
<<Has anyone used those boarding, ticket, DL holders? I've seen them in the stores and wondered if they'd be useful.>>
Yes, they are useful. I've made a lot of international trips without one and it's been a pain taking my passport out, putting it back, knowing exactly where it is etc. so I bought a bright red one so I could see it immediately in my purse and only used it around my neck when going from passport control through customs.
Last trip I didn't bother with it and dropped my passport at JFK. I'd shown it at immigration and put it into an inside pocket in my jacket. I don't know how it fell out, maybe when I leaned to get my luggage off the carousel? Or when I pulled the customs form out of the inside pocket? I was very lucky that someone turned it in to officials near the exit. I stopped by the door to wait for a friend to catch up and one of the officials called my name. I asked how they knew me and she held up the passport I didn't know I'd lost. Yikes! I was spending the night in NYC and wouldn't have missed it until checking in the next day.
Needless to say, it's going with me next trip and I'm wearing it even though I feel like a kid with a note pinned on my jacket.
Welig12-I just want to say that your purse (no matter what type) is only as good as how careful you are carrying it and keeping it with you. I fly overseas everyweek and it still surprises me that so many women buy those wire strap type purses and don't pay attention to where it is hanging and who they are next to. Some get a very poor sense of security thinking that it is safe and then treat it like an unlocked backpack hanging off of them.To everyone- Thieves watch you at the ATM's,buying stuff in stores and seeing what your wallet looks like, etc. so I encourage everyone to be aware of their surroundings but don't be paranoid!Divide your important cards(like ATm,Visas ) so they are not all in the same wallet and be sure to photocopy all the cards and passport before you go along with the 800 numbers in case you need to call them. Then enjoy your trip!
Dear Dutyfree:
Good Information!
Thanks
I have a black nylon travel purse with a long strap that can be work across the body and lies flat. I ordered it several years ago from either Travelsmith or Magellans. It has the cable in the strap so it can not be cut. Also, has a pocket for a travel book and a pocket for a water bottle.
annieladd,
You didn't mention about the itinerary, but if you're flying to/through UK, make sure that ultimate travel purse you buy fits inside the carry-on bag as UK allows only ONE carry-on piece.
BellaItalia,

Your purse sounds like the city safe purse I bought.

Oddly enough, BA doesn't seem to enforce their carryon rules as rigorously on the Orlando route (both directions) as they do on other routes. I flew from LGW to MCO and back in late March and noticed that most passengers were still dragging along two pieces of carryon (including many pax with rollers AND large purses or bulging computer bags). Both flights were very full, but even so, there was definitely a "blind eye" thing going on. However, at LGW anyway, for flights going to other destinations, the rule was being enforced.
And my word, the size of some of those suitcases British pax were checking in at MCO! Lots of chatter at the check in lines about all the loot they'd bought at bargain prices. A couple of families had traveled to the U.S. with just carryon, but went back to the UK with ginormous suitcases they'd bought in Florida that were filled to the brim with newly purchased clothing, shoes, CDs, etc.
What does the airline mean when they indicate that the size of the carry on bag must not exceed a particular size( example.. 55 cm in length, 35 cm in width, 25 cm in depth)...this actually converts to 45.31 inches overall...but what do they mean by wheels and handles included?
welig12 - Most suitcases don't have wheels and handles that are flush with the body of the suitcase. You need to include 1" or 2" or whatever protrudes outside the "body" of the suitcase in your measurements. Again, you will find some airlines are more lenient than others.

I found this thread, and site two weeks ago when I was looking for a cute travel purse. I also wanted something to wear across the body, that was slightly bigger than the bag I have from Eddie Bauer from 5+ years ago (to fit camera, ipod, book, phone). I came across a bag last week- from Sherpani. Sherpanipacks.com I ordered the Milli in Black. I love it! I also purchased the Pica- and while I like the size, I liked the looks of the Milli better. There are three different zippered pockets, one inside the main compartment, one on the flap, and one on the outside under the flap. It comes with a little coin purse too!
If you are traveling overseas, and may be visiting a locations that may be prone to pickpockets, I would highly suggest you consider a travel purse or handbag that has security features. While many purses/handbags have zippers, you should look for one that has both a zipper and a flap, so it takes two steps for a potential thief to enter your purse in a crowed subway station or shopping area.
If you want to look at a travel purse handbag with built in anti-pickpocket features, these are the options on a few travel purse manufactures that have added these options:
Probably the most important: Zipper Locks
The most common theft from a purse is having a wallet or cell phone removed. About 3 manufactures make travel security purses that have built-in zippers locks so it takes two hands to un-clip the security zipper in order to remove something. While this is not difficult for the owner to use (they all used simple eye hook clips), it is very difficulty for a pickpocket to gain entry with one hand (the preferred method).
Detachable Purse Straps
This is another great anti-theft feature. When you stop to have dinner, lunch, or a coffee at a small Parisian cafe, where do you put your purse? On the back of your chair (we all should know how dangerous this is), on the empty chair next to us?, on sitting on the floor next to our chair. While most of us know the issues surrounding purse theft, a few purse manufactures have added a detachable purse strap feature to add another security layer to keep purses and handbags from walking away. One end of the travel purse easily detaches from the side of the bag, allowing you to pass the strap thru the back of the chair then securing it back to the purse with the built in strap clip. This feature is usually called a ant-snatch purse strap. The purse manufactures who have added this feature do a good job of hiding the detachable strap hardware from view when not in use. This is a very big problem in Europe. To see how easy it is to have a purse stolen in a restaurant, this website has several videos of purses being stolen (as well as other purse theft videos - they provide a good reminded to anyone who needs a refresher on the importance purses security - especially when traveling internationally:

Anti-Slashing Purse Straps
In some parts of the world, slick purse thieves have been known to come up behind women and cut the back strap of women's purse straps, causing the purse to slide into the hands of a purse thief. This is typically done on crowded metro stops, escalators, or other location when you may not notice this occurring.
Lastly, some security purses have built in anti-slashing panels into the bottom and sides of purses. While this is probably the least common form of purse theft, it does show up as a problem in parts of southern Europe and elsewhere overseas. How this feature works is that thing metal mesh is embedded in between the inside and outside fabric layers of the purse.
While travel security purses may not be for everyone, they perform a function that can help keep a traveler out of a police station making a purse theft report, calling credit card companies, and other unpleasant experiences that no traveler wants to be inconvenienced doing while on vacation.
The below website has a variety of different travel security purses, many with videos so you can see how these anti-theft features work.

Hope this information helps you with additional considerations when selecting a new travel purse. Again, these features may not be for everyone, but at least you are aware of them.

I just found a new bag by Gianni Bernini and have used it twice. I really like it - plus it came in purple! I generally like a smaller bag but I now have sunglasses that are in a big case and I need something they will fit into. I've been able to cram a lot in this bag! I got mine at Macy's (on sale) but I think this line is sold elsewhere also.

Always looking for the perfect bag, my money is on the Kipling defea. Incredibly sturdy, and deceptively large with all the pockets you could need. Purchased for a walking tour of Paris, lightweight enough to carry your tablet, and just about everything else you an think of.
wow whosamama, you are brave carrying a tablet computer on a tour of paris. Its never something I would do.
I almost had my purse stolen from my handbag on a metro while in paris. Just a simple mistake of wearing my cross body bag over one shoulder... A little 'bump and jostle', and then remember feeling my handbag slip behind me a little. Thats all it takes, a little bump and your handbag zip is broken, and your purse is sticking out... Now I ensure my purse is covered. I use a handkerchief to cover my purse (although i noticed the handkerchief pulled back when my purse was almost lifted); and my keys over the purse but under the hanky. my bag turned inwards, zippers are closed and fastened tightly, and i make sure the bag is worn across my body, to my front and also now, under my coat...
The time I felt the jostle and bump, on the metro, they nearly had my purse. I was carrying just over 2500 euros for a business trip. My purse also had my identity and security codes for business and codes for ATM.
I dont advertise any brand labels on my handbags or clothes when i travel...
But as i say, just one bump and a small zip is all that separates their hand from your purse
Haven't read the replies but lookk for a messenger bag--and don't put your valuables in the bag. Get a belly bag for that and keep it under your clothes/jacket
Long ago because I travel some theft-prone spots, I made a set of cotton pockets for cash, credit cards & passport that I attach inside my waistband with a diaper pin. For years I carried a bag I designed & made myself because I couldn't find anything commercial that fit the bill. It has a padded strap that secures to my shoulder with an inside diaper pin, a strap for keys & a longer strap long enough for camera so I don't have to release the camera to take pics. However, because I wanted a smaller bag I've just bought an Overland Equipment Auburn bag. Google, as the prices vary. It is relatively compact & masculine enough I bought an extra for my male travel companion so he doesn't have to carry a backpack everyplace. The Auburn is large enough for an iPad, though I'll mostly carry a Kindle overseas now.
Le SportSac might have just what you're looking for.
