Hello everyone,
I will be 27 weeks pregnant when we are in Amsterdam for 4 days in July 2016 with my husband and 11 year old daughter. I am looking for somewhere that will suit all of us - not too much walking for me and few if any stairs, family friendly and close but not too close to central Amsterdam (don't want to be in the red light district for obvious reasons). Your help would be much appreciated as I have been looking for hours and as yet have not found anything suitable.

Since any place on or near a tram line will take care of most of the walking, and finding a hotel w/ an elevator will solve the stairs issue . . . more important is . . . What is your budget?

Me personally - I would want to be very central if walking is going to be a problem.

Look at more modern hotel choices (with elevator). Most traditional Amsterdam lodging does have crazy staircases involved, so that concern is a valid one!

It's actually not hard to be "central" in Amsterdam, as it's a pretty small place. The biggest, by far, concern is the incredibly steep, narrow staircases. They are a horror. Take look at the Bridge Hotel. It was three trips ago that we stayed there, but we loved it and the location, and I'm pretty sure it had either an elevator or "normal" staircases.

I am curious why you don't want to be very central. If I was pregnant I'd want to be as central as possible so I could easily get back to the hotel for a rest or whatever.

Very central but quiet, large rooms, very nice restaurant on site, short walk to Dam Square, walking distance to Anne Frank's house, etc . . .

It is indeed hard to know what you're looking for, since you don't mention a budget--is that why you are having difficulty finding a place? I also don't understand why you don't want to be as centrally located as possible.

Yes, it's composed of a series of old townhouses, but there are rooms on lower levels which you could request, and I do not recall that the staircases were anything close to "a horror", lol, in any event.

It's hard to recommend without a budget but if you would like something on the higher end I would recommend the Waldorf Astoria

Is there something about the Red Light District that is putting you off wanting to be "central?" It's not that big, nor is it terribly offensive or off-putting. And there is no reason you couldn't be in central Amsterdam and never set foot anywhere near it, if it bothers you that much. You just walk around it. Same with the coffee shops, if they bother you.

lose but not too close, with a lift, and public transport close by (and a shuttle from the hotel to the station0 is teh Movenpick.
But Really why not stay in the centre? You do not have to be anywhere near the RLD, which is easily avoided on any visit to the city.

The Estherea has an elevator and is quite central, but quiet. It is on a lovely canal.

I have no aversion to the RLD but my impressionable 11 year old daughter would.
Central suggestions appreciated if they are not in RLD. Thanks for pointing that out!!
Our budget is around 140 euro.

Have you considered AirBnB or VRBO? We stayed in an apartment in Amsterdam and loved it. I can't help you with the hotel recommendations, but the area we stayed in is Westerkerk, named after a famous church near the Ann Frank House. It is nowhere near the RLD, but your budget might be too low for that area.

Not staying in the RLD is easy (not sure why you are focusing on that so much, not like it's where people usually stay, and it's hardly noticeable except a few certain streets if you are really closely paying attention).

Your much bigger challenge will be a nice place to stay, with no stairs or an elevator, and a price as low as 140 euro per night.

ha.. first time I took my hubby to RLD he did not even REALIZE we were in the area at first.. it was summer.. many folks were out wandering the narrow streets.. so he didn't notice the black light lit windows till I pointed them out to him...so its entirely possible to wander through it without realizing it if its a busy day or evening..

ha ha.. just thought of something from years ago.. my friend took her then 9 yr old son to Amsterdam.. on siting a window the mom told the son that they use live mannequins to sell lingerie.. he bought that lie without batting an eye..

Please be aware that there is a big crackdown against AirBnB and similar going on at the moment, mostly due to a popular outcry against the negative influence apartment sub-letting is having on housing in Amsterdam.
