Places to stay in Krakow and Warsaw

I am a solo traveler, senior citizen. My head is spinning with all the places to stay in either city. I would like a B&B in a quiet location walking distance to the old city. Please don’t laugh, but I don’t want to pay over 50 euro per night. I don’t care if it is a hotel or apartment (but not a hostel.) as long as it is recommended. Can you please make a recommendation?

I would encourage you to use the currency of the country you'll be visiting to make things easier for any responders and ultimately easier for yourself. I've converted your E50 to 213PLN.

I stayed at the Trecius Hotel in Krakow. The prices for a single are 150PLN and 170PLN so within your budget. Breakfast is not included but I would encourage you to pay the small extra charge.

The Trecius is a short block from the main square but the location is not quiet - there was street noise which doesn't bother me. I found this small hotel to be delightful. It had a reception and breakfast room combination and the staff were so helpful and friendly. Breakfast was not served until 8:00 but I went to the breakfast room early with my laptop and the person who was there early (at 7:00) would give me a cup of coffee to start my day.

They are renovating the hotel to include a restaurant on the ground floor and an elevator. I hope they keep the charm of the place as it was last year.

In Warsaw there are very few hotels near Old Town Square. There was one (can't remember the name) but it did not have an elevator. It's right on the square across from the palace. I spoke with some ladies who were staying there and they said there were a number of stairs. I stayed across the river (Hotel Helmet) and needed a taxi (or bus) to Old Town Square. The taxi rates double after 9:00 so it was expensive to go back to the hotel at night. There were only 2 dining options near the hotel and neither were very nice.

Most hotels in Warsaw were about $100 USD so more than your 213PLN per night.

When I was looking for hotels in Poland I don't really remember coming across any B&Bs. That's not to say they don't exist but I don't remember seeing them.

We stayed at the Hotel Saski in Krakow, about 1/2 block from the Main Square. We liked it a lot. The price included a delicious hot & cold breakfast. We were there in October 2003 & had a triple room, which I believe cost $90USD, but that was in 2003. But it would be worth checking out.

I stayed at Trecius in Krakow as well; lovely and so very clean. Check out www.inyourpocket.com for some of the best info. I stayed at Boutique B&B in Warsaw; it's now about 75 euro, though.

Here's my trip report with a bit more info: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...-july-2006.cfm

I stayed in Castle Inn by Castle-Zamkowy- Square on Warsaw end of January 2011. I think this might be the place adrienne refers to (?) I checked through booking.com and other sites, and I found the rate offered directly on their web-site the most compaititive at the time. I looked on my notes, and it costed 1077 zlotys for 5 nights without breakfast. As in many old buildings in Poland, there is no elevator. Reception is one the first floor. The particular hotel retains its original exterior and general architecture, but it has been renovated/decorated by modern architects/artists inside. Each room has a different theme and might not be everyone's cup of tea. But rooms were clean, reception staff polite, location handy. It was quiet on January, but I hear it might be some noise on busier months, as some "bar streets" are located near by.
On February 2011 I stayed 5 nights on Hotel Polonia on Krakow across train station, which might not be your cup of tea, as it stands among busy roads and is a dated hotel, but might suit you budget wise. I paid 620 zlotys including a very rich buffet breakfast and omelettes on order for 5 nights, room was decent and clean.
