Places to stay in Basel, Switzerland

We will be travelling to Dornach from Zurich in July and would like to stay in Basel overnight after visiting the Goetheanum in Dornach. I would love to have some recommendations for nice, reasonably priced bed & breakfasts or hotels in Basel.

What do you mean by reasonable? Switz is the most expensive country in europe - and deals are few and far between. Also - how many is "we" - a couple or more? If more, what type of lodging are you looking at?

It is not the most expensive..you want expensive, go to Oslo and as to a hotel, check out the Hotel D in Basel. It may not be to your taste but it's a start.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights a few years ago and would stay there again -
http://www.schweizerhof-basel.ch/index.php?id=13&L=1

It was run by efficient, friendly staff and had a good location, opposite the tram station. There is a tourist tram you can catch which gives you a tour of Basel. The hotel gave us a transport pass for the time we were staying in Basel which we thought was fabulous (how many cities in the world do that?) and I believe all hotels in Basel offer that.

I can't remember what it cost but we usually stay in budget/midprice places so that will give you some idea.

Try http://www.venere.com/switzerland/basel/

You can filter by price and type of hotel. Check it out on the map and always read the reviews of folks who've stayed at the hotel in the past.

Basel is a lovely town with a very nice view. The Kunstmuseum is also very nice, with many Paul Klee pictures there.

I'm going to make an "out of the box" suggestion and recommend the Landgasthof in Riehen, a stone's throw from the Beyeler Foundation and right by the Riehen tram stop. It has been completely renovated with very good reports. I will be in Riehen this week and will pop in to give it a look. Singles about 125 francs a night, including breakfast.

FYI, the Kunstmuseum has a major Renoir exhibition going on. http://www.kunstmuseumbasel.ch/en/home/

(My favourite painting in the museum is the one showing mermaids at play, including a manic mermaid toddler clutching a fish.)
